Should I even condiser a new Remington 870 for a defensive shotgun. I know that the new production Remington 700s are utter shit. Are there new production 870s any better? Also is there any real reason to spend the extra $100 for Mossberg 590 over a 500? I am looking for somthing like pic(s) related, a full length tube/extended tube, bead sight and a standard stock.

new 870 are shit
590 is pointless, unless it's specifically the 590A1, which has a thicker heavier barrel and metal trigger guard.
Just go for a 8 shot 500.

If you must, a Mossberg is just fine.

Having owned both an 870 and a 500 I will say that the distinction is pretty marginal. I can't speak to the post-cerebus quality issues but I think mine is of that era and it hasn't had any problems, for what that's worth. If you can get an old police trade-in wingmaster that'd be the way to go. Those things are the shit and they're usually really well priced.
There are some quirks between the two like how extending the magazine works (easier on the 870) and where the safety lever is, but for the most part it is your typical ford vs. chevy weenie wagging kind of shit.

A Mossberg 500 would be a great option. If you want to get a good deal on one and aren't too concerned about the gun being brand new, check your local pawn shops. You can find a lot of pump guns for cheap there, I see a lot of Mossbergs for under $200 and Remingtons for under $300.
My first shotgun was an 20 inch 8-shot persuader model with a pistol grip and a heatshield. I bought the wood furniture later. If I had to go back and do it again, I'd probably buy one with the standard tube and a 18.5 inch barrel instead, as the decreased weight and length make those models much more maneuverable and handy, and 5+1 rounds of 00 buck should be more than sufficient for almost any home defense scenario. The 5 shot models are also a lot easier to find cheap than the ones with the extended tubes.

One more thing, the 590s are more robustly built, but for reasonable use your run of the mill 500 is more than reliable enough.
I'd really only get a 590 if I planned on subjecting the gun to an absurd amount of abuse or if I decided I really needed a bayonet on my shotgun. That said, if you find a good deal on a 590, there's no reason not to pick it up.
And for what it's worth, you can buy an adapter for 8 shot M500s to mount an M7 or M9 pattern bayonet, but they don't really hold up to any real use.

Unless you only have one arm there is literally no reason to not choose a long arm over a handgun
Hey /k/, Im going to buy my first scatter gat soon and I have two choices. This gun will be almost exclusively used for fucking around at the range so it doesn't need to serve any role. My choices are a Security 320 with ghost ring sights ($250) or a Mossberg 500 18.5" standard. The Security is nice because of the ghost rings and pistol grip but the Mossberg is far higher quality. What do I go for.
Easy.
Double barrel. Just go outside and fire it in the air and you won't have any problems.

While I understand that you're being sarcastic, I would like to point out that going outside and putting two rounds into the sky IS the best way to wake up, and ought to be a part of any healthy man's morning routine.

What would you rather use, a Taurus Judge?
>>31182492
Hey OP, I'm actually going to be picking up a 590 special purpose myself tomorrow from my lgs, for a couple of reasons. Yes, it costs about $100 more than the 500, but it's already got the tube extensor as well as ghost ring sights, and is ready to take a bayonet. The ghost rings, paired with brenneke ko slugs, also means that I'll feel comfortable using it to take white tail out to about 70 yards. Yes, I could just put the work in and save a few bucks, but fuck it, I'm lazy, so it's gonna be the 590 for me. Just my two cents.
I've always been fond of the Ithaca 37 police special. 7 round tube, lightweight and reliable. Probably not as reliable when stacked against a 500 or 870, but I've never had an issue with mine. I've owned all 3, an old 870 Home defense model (early 2000's model with the old long forend on it) and a 500 Persuader model and between the 870 and the 500 I liked the 500 more. Plastic parts never bothered me, though the safety would randomly get really stiff at times and the stock was a tad longer than I like, but both are solid choices. I do prefer a shorter tube for home defense though, I've since swapped out the 7 round tube on my Ithaca to a 4 round one, giving me 5 rounds total. Makes it easier to handle indoors. Also more convenient when I go hunting.

A rifle is better but that doesn't mean it isn't an alright choice.
We have too many shotgun threads lately. The answer is simple.
An upgraded 870 is better than a Mussberg. An old upgraded 870 is better than a new upgraded 870.
No birdshot, only #1 buck with 1 or 2 slugs on board on the off chance you might need one. 00 is OK if you can't find #1 but it simply is not as good.
Only answer
>>31182543
That's just it, though. The safety is basically the biggest difference. A Mussberg safety will never, ever be as fast or easy as an extended 870 safety. No ifs ands or butts(eks).
>>31182492
If you can afford an 870 Police, do it, they're tits.
The Express models are pieces of shit though.
If not then Benelli Nova or Mossberg.

I want a semiautomatic because reasons and I don't plan on running anything that would cause cycling problems.
A Benelli M2 or Beretta 1301 Tactical LE would be great. I of course would love a Benelli M4.

>ever putting your guns on safe
it's like you want to get raped to death
>>31186126
Actually, what I said was based in fact, not opinion.
#4 can fail to meet minimum penetration standard, #1 meets it and has more pellets than 00, which also meets it. So of the two shot sizes that meet the standard, one has 8/9 pellets and one has 15 pellets. If the obvious choice isn't obvious, sry bout your tardation.
>>31184355
Great choice. Not as great as a model 37 though.
Serious bizzznezz /k/ommandos, how the fuck is the best pump action in history not represented here?
>>31186393
Well I do, just not "to death." Close to death would probably be acceptable, if I had to compromise.
I have an M12 trench that I use. If I had to buy a new one I'd pick a mossberg 930 SPX since I'm thinking about getting into 3 gun
What's the consensus on the nova/supernova from benelli?
I would like an m2 but I just don't know if I want to spend that money

Take a look at the Winchester SXP Defenders. Very underrated shotguns.
There are a lot of choices on the market now, HD shotguns are a huge right now. You could buy something like a CZ for the same price as that 870 and have a better shotgun. The only thing with imports is the magazine is capped at 5 shells because politicians.
I wonder if a 45-70 with some hot loads of hollow points would do well
