Alright, so in the UK you'll require a different mindset to one you are used to compared with the US. People in the UK generally feel very safe in their day to day lives without an armament of any sorts. Common sense is the prevailing thing that keeps you safe and I'm sure you already know the do(s) and don't(s) to avoid being condensing to you.

You can carry some items that can be used in self-defence, however the reason for carrying them cannot for the sake of being a weapon, because that is a crime. Sucks, but it is what it is.

So carrying a knife (that's below a certain length) is accept for the sake of being a multitool, but you cannot carry it for the sake of being a weapon.

Judges are fine, they don't decide the law buddy they just apply it. It's well known that in New Zealand, acceptable reasons for owning a gun don't include self defence, and you can only use a gun for self defense if it's immediately available to you when you need it and is loaded, which is impossible because you must store them unloaded in a safe.

Our laws are generally based on harm reduction overall as opposed to guaranteeing rights, so offenders not dying is given higher prioroty than me not getting robbed. Unfortunately that means if some cunt breaks into my house I can't shoot him or they'll take my guns away.
