One of my grandads was in Omaha, other grandad was one of the boat ramp hand crank operators at Okinawa. Given their descriptions, Omaha. Neither were pretty, though.

Depends where at Omaha. Any couch historian worth his salt knows that only Dog green sector was "horrible".

The first wave at dog green had a 100% casualty rate for the first wave and like 50% for the second.

Iwo Jima first wave wasnt a problem, since the marines all waited for backup at the beachhead, since Iwo Jima had blach ashy shore, which was lower than the elevated ground further in.

That means that the first wave at Iwo Jima had no issues at all other than some 88s firing on them and the occasional mortar.

That being said, the first group of marines to push inland?

All in all. I pity the brave men who died on both sides of both battles. Id rather sit comfily in a tiger in the eastern front.

One my Uncles talked with me about hitting Utah after it was secured and he said the water was just fucking red with blood. He said of all the shit he saw during the rest of the war that fifteen or twenty minutes he spent coming off the beach was the only thing he had nightmares about.
My uncles who fought in the pacific said they had to fight for every last inch of land they took with everything they had. The three of my uncles who served in Europe never argued about the fighting in they Pacific being incomparable to the fighting in Europe. None of them would have traded places.

My grandpas brother was one the first wave of Iwo Jima they both signed up after Pearl Harbor. Grandpa went navy and his little brother went marine.

Anyways he told me some stories about the assault but I was a little kid so it's hard to remember.

My uncle was in the Navy, and happened to be present for both Iwo Jima and Omaha. He was a gunner on the ship, so nowhere near close enough to actually see what was going on.

Based on the numbers though, they were actually pretty similar in terms of % of U.S. personnel killed in action. Twice the number of K.I.A. at Iwo Jima, but then again, there were about 3x more soldiers present at the start of the battle. Probably still take the European theatre, at least when Germans surrender they actually surrendered.
