Proved how? And automatic rifles today are much different from WWI and II automatic rifles.
Long and heavy automatic rifles with 20-30 round magazines vs heavy barreled assault rifles with 30+ capacity meant for accurate suppression while still being able to do rifleman duties.
Automatic rifles don't replace GPMGs/SAWs, they supplement them, nobody is saying automatic rifles are superior or on par with the suppression capabilities of a true GPMG/SAW but a well designed autorifle is much more mobile and well suited for a flanking team.

Autorifles fill a role between DMRs and MGs while being more mobile and versatile than both, the trade off is that it isn't as accurate as a DMR and can't lay down a large base of fire like an MG.
The automatic rifle is a great concept however has yet to be executed well enough to be worth it and most militaries have just gone with the two extremes (DMR and MG); the Russian RPK was too similar to the AK pand was simply an unnecessary strain on logistics and production, the IAR would be great if it was issued with 30+ mags but it's not bad.
