Afternoon, /k/. Whats this thing on the back of the los angeles class submarines?
Also sorry about that bad photos, there arenĀ“t many pics of the los angeles class submarines in drydock.

So thats what it is. Gracias, I would never have figured that out on my own.
The Illinois was delivered to the Navy a couple days ago, early in fact.

This comes as the USS Houston, a Los Angeles-class sub, is decommissioned.

I do volunteer work on that sub, I've made threads here once and a while for people to ask to see specific things. We had an issue the night they flooded the dock too, one of the ballast tanks wasn't refilled properly and we took a 10-15 degree list in the dock. Had to run fire hoses from the pier to the boat to level her out. On top of that, right after we finished running the hoses a severe storm hit so we were righting against the weather and incorrect ballast.
>>31172094
Here we're pulling the covers off tank 2C to drop a fire hose in.
>>31171141
Drydock thread?
>>31172108
Was a fun experience though. I'll probably never again get the chance to ride a 72 year old sub as she's towed to dry dock, then experience an issue like the one we had, then ride it home.
Typhoon Class.

Subs in the arctic are incredible.
>>31171201
Yo dawg.
>>31172223
what class of submarine is this?
>>31172160
What are the patterns on the ice in the upper middle of this photo? They look like bare leaf stems or something.

>>31172846
Yeah i'm wrong, this anon >>31172925 is right. That's a Trafalgar.
>>31172955
Nah, look at the hull protrusion for'd of the sail. Trafalgar. Pic related.
If it were a 688, it'd have to be a 688I, after they moved the fairweather planes to the bow.
>>31172891
I think it's pointing to north, east, south and west. It probably also marks exactly where the sub were supposed to surface.
>>31172891
>>31173051
North Pole. Every now and then the Russians, USN and Brits will do photo ops up there in late summer if the ice is thin enough to breech. Tradition goes back to the Narwhal and Seawolf back in the 50's.
>go on /k/

Dad was 15 years navy. His last vessel was the SSN Salt Lake City. I remember the galley and bunks when I was given a tour at 4 years old. The smell of metal and oil permiated through everything.

They do have a very distinct smell.
You have been visited by the smiling sub of happiness

Ha. Funny story about that boat involving Rickover and the reason for his forced retirement.

Source/greentext? C'mon, anon...
>>31174282
I work at EB and heard this story second hand from another employee whose father was on sea trials. Rickover gives the command to simulate some casualty. And for some reason or another, it ended with the boat exceeding its maximum depth at an angle, stern first.

You got any neato pics of submarines?
>>31173114
They had a cricket match there once.
>>31175882
That's fuckin awesome. Cheers for the trivia mate.
For those looking for a good read, the early stories of the SSNs they first sent under the ice are awesome. Captain Anderson (Nautilus) wrote a book called The Ice Diaries about the first trip to the north pole (sounded like a snoozer to me, turned out to be excellent). Captain McLaren (USS Queenfish) wrote Unknown Waters about mapping the Siberian arctic shelf under the ice in 1970, which was also a great read.
>>31175952
Im currently in the middle of a book called "The Silent Deep". Its about the Royal Navy Submarine Service since 1945, so basically testing the hydrogen peroxide submarines, arguing with Rickover, trying to get funding for the first SSBNs etc etc.
I think its a pretty good book and its only 10 pounds so the vast majority of people could afford it, its not like buying an IHS Janes all the worlds ships.
Its got some really nice cutaway diagrams of the submarines too.

Newport News, on a PCU
>>31175710
I do not, as I fear federal prison and the Hillary defense already failed another sailor. Here is one from the internet
>>31175994
I'll have to check that out. I'm actually pretty light on post-war UK sub history. I don't start having a good handle on the players and moving parts until the 70's.
>>31176016
Always amazes me. Looks more like a clean room in a JPL build lab than a graver's dock. Building spaceships, man.
>>31176059
You American or British? im assuming American by the books you recommended.
>>31176083
They're pretty neat. It's in a giant 9 story garage to keep it hidden from space and whatnot

USS Torsk, its a museum in Baltimore, MD
>>31173995
Sure I'll post a few more
>>31174118
These photos are from 2011, however we do have one shot of the remaining screw on the boat, the other had been removed for a memorial display back in the 80s, we were actually one of the only museum subs with a propeller still attached up until 2011.
>>31176208
Oh found another of the screw.
>>31176224
>>31176287
Boarding via scissor lift is not fun, you have to step out over the railing on the lift, then step across the 3-4 foot gap onto the side of the super structure, then duck under the railing on the deck
>>31176325
Shot from when the dock was first drained. Still impresses me how they manage to land a ship on those small blocks.
>>31176348
Same boat in dry dock in 1954 after taking some damage in a heavy storm.
>>31173008
Why do the brits build their subs out of Lego?
>>31176442
>>31171171
how do they get the wooden blocks underneath the boat? do they set them up before they bring it in?
>>31171028
If you're quite the naval enthusiast, "Dangerous Waters" is an excellent simulation. There are community mods too.
Makes for fun to get into different scenarios with these modern submarines.
>>31171171
>tfw this isn't the original USS Constellation
>>31176125
>They're pretty neat. It's in a giant 9 story garage to keep it hidden from space and whatnot
But not hidden from the entirety of the Facebook community it seems.

It literally has the game developer's trademark down in the corner, it's time to get some sleep vatnik.
>>31175882
Used to work with a guy who was a "Submariner" in US Navy in the 50's. He said they used to go to north pole, let the water freeze around sub, and stay there for about 6 months. Until the ice melted. Creepy. Normal exercise.
>>31176287
>prop
Cool, thank you.
>>31177069
Thanks, never knew this existed.
Should sate my naval autism for a while.
>>31178871
Yeah, I run it with the "reinforce alert" mod.
You can even operate Skipjack class SSNs if you want to re-enact some of that "Blind Man's Bluff" goodness, or re-enact some of the scenarios from "Red Storm Rising" as the Soviet submarines like the November class are present.
There's also more modern period submarines like the Virginia.
Sweet game and I enjoy the flexibility of operating submarines, fixed/rotary wing assets or even the Oliver Hazard Perry.
>that feel when programming presets in your MH-60R for the Mk54 to drop it on top a contact.
>>31178982
Whoops, Sturgeon-class not Skipjack. Too early.
>>31177044
The put some in place beforehand.
Then you take the boat, align it with the pier and the wooden blocks & wait for the tide to lower, so the hull rests on the block;
While it's lowering you have scuba divers underneath adjusting each block and adding some inbetween.
