My grandfather served with the Coast Guard during the Second world war. Saw some combat in the Pacific but very little.

According to my father they were bored out of their minds the entire time then scared shitless when the Japs showed up. Made feeling bored not so bad.

Your grandfather was a rarity. Not many CGs deployed. They mostly worked as escorts. Seeing combat on top of being one the few deployed narrows down the list to an incredibly small few.

The only bad thing is that they can board and search any vessel in any US waters. Even bass boats on a lake in a land locked state. Literally no reason.

It'd make sense of you came from international waters or are a commercial vessel.

But really wasting people's time for no reason and trampling all over the constitution for absolutely no reason.

Border patrol makes slightly more sense. Game wardens you are right. But I've never had a run in with them yet and I haven't had a license for the past 10 yrs I've hunted out of state whoops. They do need atleast some probable cause though. Coast guard doesn't and are dicks about it.

Also this isn't coast guard but my local sheriff boats also can stop and perform a "safety" inspection for absolutely no reason. Half the time the first question out of his mouth is where is the drugs. Pisses me off to no end. I'm not gonna comply next time till he tells me the exact law or whatever that lets them do that.

Depends on where you're stationed but it they could be out for 3 weeks to 3 months from what I've heard. They make stops CG bases along the coast while underway.
There's plenty of info online on cutter life. If you're enlisted, it'll depend on whether you're a nonrate seaman/fireman, or if you have a rating. Unless you have guaranteed A-school (CG is in need of non-rates right now IIRC), you'll spend ~5 months doing basic work like cleaning, painting, helping in the galley, and working alongside boatswain's mates or machinery technicians, standing watch, etc, all while you finish your qualifications so you can go to A-school (which is sometimes a pretty long wait, the wait time changes all the time for each rating).
Call up your local recruiter and they should be able to discuss it with you. They come from various ratings so they'll have their own actual experiences to share with you. I was discharged before finishing boot camp so I'm not the best source.

Coast Guard looks cool because you get to play with guns and not have to fear going to war. Only downside is you'll be stuck close to home instead of seeing the world. Then again no point seeing the world if it is filled with desert niggers trying to kill you.
>>
>>31176383

>>31176433
Coast Guard deploys and sees more combat on average than all the other branches. They are constantly fighting drug smugglers. Also, they have guys over the world, particularly in the Persian gulf. Dont knock the Coast Guard. They got some of the hardest and most competent guys in our military.
>>
My stepdad's former Coast Guard MP - served in the early-mid 90's down in the Caribbean. I'll have to take down some of his stories for /k/ tomorrow. Most of what he did was just dealing with Cuban refugees and various drug runners, though his clipper got involved with a lot of rescues when dumbfucks tried to brave hurricanes in their little dinghies.

It's funny, actually. The dude is fucking deadly with a handgun, especially a 1911 or 92FS, but he's hopeless with a rifle. Apparently he pretty much qualified once on the M4, and then never got to touch them again. They had all of four of them locked up on his clipper, along with a single 870. Everyone just used handguns, and even then a lot of those didn't see the light of day.
>>
>>31171796
Th guys that run these surf boats are probably the craziest lunatics around. The chopper pilots are nuts too, but the surf boats are just a whole other level of crazy
>>
>>31176669
What is so crazy about working on these boats?
>>
>>31176700
So the surf boats are designed to roll and right themselves. When they are training new surfboat drivers, they sometimes, though they arent supposed to, roll the boat on purpose to show the new guys what its like

Also surfboat stations are mainly located in the worst most accident prone area, commonly where rivers meet oceans. The meeting of river and ocean commonly makes for rough and variable conditions.

They operate in high sea states, in actual hurricanes in a 47 foot long aluminum bathtub
>>
>>31176789
Oh and they do this while driving the boat from an open air bridge.
This is my local station doing some training

>>31176700
47' Motor Lifeboat, built to withstand hurricane conditions; they'll flip right back up if they capsize (very expensive repairs ensue).
The guys who operate these in heavy surf have to wear harnesses and attach themselves to anchor points all along the boat so they don't go overboard.
They use these boats for normal rescues outside of hurricanes as well but the guys that operate these in the heavy shit have to go through training to become Surfmen.

If on a rescue mission and a helicopter has to take someone off the lifeboat, these guys are standing on the back of the boat in a storm, looking up trying to guide the basket safely onto the deck.
They can also tow a pretty good amount of weight, but if the line snaps and you're next to it you're probably fucked.
I was given a tour of one at a local base before and it's a fuckin tank.

What were your officers like?
Do you guys have any say in getting overseas or arctic duty? Is it competitive?
What is the longest you were out at sea for?
Is joining a boarding team competitive?
Do a lot of guys generally wanna join the cool guy former DOG units? (MSRT, MSST, Port security units)
Did you enjoy your time?
If you could change one thing about the coast guard what would you change?
What did you enjoy the most?
Many say that the Coast Guard represents more of the "mariner ethos" than the Navy does. Could you expand on that?

Sorry for all the autistic questions... I am genuinely curious.

>Cutter
Never underway

>Officers
I recall as a brand new E3 I was seated with O1 waiting to do some paperwork. A commander walked by and scooped up the O1 to put paper in a printer. Take that for what you will. Most of the officers are cool, and in general (especially in the M world) it's casual as fuck.

I did port state control inspections and generally worked with warrants who understood the regs better.

>Longest at sea
Maybe 6 hours?

>Boarding team
From what I understand all rates are included in "boarding teams" while underway. The TACLETS and such are a little more competitive. MSSTs are relatively easy to get on to.

>DOG shit
PSU's are gay as fuck but I have the most experience with them, I suppose. No one wants to do it, it's all reservists who think they are high speed as fuck. MSRT seems super legit, I saw them once at tracen yorktown in their jumpsuits or whatever. From what I understand that's super competitive. MSST is not that badass.

>Did I enjoy
Yeah it was fun and I learned a lot desu.

>Change one thing
More funding

>Enjoy the most
climbing up jacobs ladders in the middle of puget sound. Facility inspections because they are casual and I like dealing with Americans.

>Mariner ethos

TACLETs are assigned to work on navy ships, usually destroyers. Since the USCG has the unique authority of being able to enforce US laws, they roll with the navy to provide that ability.

MSRT is a legit counter terrorism unit, train with HRT and all that good shit

TACLET is what you want to bust somali pirates, MSRT is what you want when the german guy from Die Hard takes over a ferry.

Why the fuck is the US so backward in organisation of government assets? Why would you need so many organisations to perform functions which are either identical or significantly overlap?

Why bother having high level CG response teams when you have DEVGRU, regular SEAL teams, FBI HRT, countless other federal response teams, and even state level SWAT teams - who are all supposed to be on high alert and able to respond incredibly quickly, and all of which are perfectly capable (or would be with a little retraining, which would still be more cost efficient) of conducting maritime operations? I appreciate the US is a big place, but you can guarantee that there's enormous overlap of different response organisations and their assigned zones.

The UK is, obviously, far smaller, and has far, far less of a genuine maritime security concern, but PROPORTIONALLY, response is still organised more efficiently. If there was a terrorist or criminal incident at sea, we have only two organisations that would potentially respond - UK Special Forces, or the very top level national level police tactical teams (CTSFOs). Surely it's not a good idea for the US to have multiple agencies all trying to get their bit at the table, turning it into a pissing contest.
