Those that are unobtrusive when using an optic.
>>
Kalashnikov rifles', PKM's, Mosin's are all great designs.

Fuck peep sights with a rake doused in acid.
>>
>>31168932
Aren't AK sights kind of a pain to zero in, though? Especially in a combat scenario.
>>
>>31168932
Aren't open sights inherently more inaccurate due to harder time actually using the sights correctly? Peep sight causes your eye to adjust.

Open sights are 19th century left-overs.
>>
>>31168984
Open sights used properly are way more precise on lateral axes. Vertical........ peep sights are just easier to learn in general and remain so for vertical. Short range I love open sights but for me they stop being useful past 200m
>>
>>31169066
Longer ranges absolutely. Brush gun distances they work great even if red dot is better
>>
>>31169084
>Short range I love open sights
Don't they take you longer to acquire on target? I know they do for me.
>>
>>31169097
For me it is faster for raising the rifle to shoulder and lining up front sight to good enough alignment. Could just be my eyesight as it takes me an extra instant to focus through the peep. Related note getting old sucks

That has more to do with sight radius than aperture type.
>>
I just know that with traditional open sights I can't shoot for shit, the target blurrs out so much that I can't get a precise or consistent point of aim. With a good aperture that's not the case, I've shot one out to 600 yards and the target was still clear as you like.
>>
>>31168846
There is no best in all categories.
Diopter sights allow for quick and natural aiming.
Notch and post sights are inherently more accurate.

What it comes down to is what do you value more, accuracy or speed.
>>
>>31169180
Aperture is good for correcting focus for eyes if you are a bit nearsighted and I have had good experiences with a 20 in ar15 with the old carrying handle sights out to 400-500 m. On other open or wider aperture sights I blur out past 300 m

>Diopter sights allow for quick and natural aiming.
>Notch and post sights are inherently more accurate.
So then why have adjustable diameter diopters been the norm for target shooting for a century plus? I think you may have that the wrong way around, but as >>31169155 said I think the only reason most people think open, or notch sights, are quicker is because their sight radius is almost always shorter than aperture sights.

Diopter sights naturally focus the eye sight allowing for shooting at a longer range.
There is a natural inconsistency from humans when centering the post, but that goes away with practice making over time a much better sight.
A notch and post does have the inherent better aiming since both elevation and windage are consistent and require no objective eye placement. This makes a better sight for accuracy for an inexperienced shooter.
I actually prefer the diopter sight for shooting.

thats whats supposed to happen.
you are not supposed to see the target youve been shooting ironsights wrong your whole life.
primary focus should be on the front sight.

Google isn't giving me a good example here

/k/ will give me shit for it, but the Mosin honestly has my favorite iron sights
>>
>>31173002
Isn't that wrong since you're supposed to keep both eyes open, and if you do that while focusing on the front sight, your target is doubled?

That picture only works with one eye closed.
>>
>>31173073
>That picture only works with one eye closed.
oh boy. you should get your eyes checked or stop shooting using your non dominant eye.
sucks to be you if you are right handed and left eye dominant

Can confirm. Am right handed, but left eye dominant. Its a pain in the butt. I have to shoot pistols with my right hand while getting shit lined up with my left eye. Rifles I just shoot lefty. Its a bit of a pain, but not too much.
>>
>>31173073
I always have one eye closed except when I'm shooting skeet
>>
>>31176082
I'm the same way, but I just taught myself to shoot with my right eye. It was easier than trying to teach myself to shoot left-handed.
