Personally I think they would have been better off just buying something close like the hk416, but in di. Would have cost them much less and the. The rifles would also weigh less. Not like there is a huge advantage with 416.

Different person on the running cold thing. I am the guy who posted about the not too many arctic conditions in France and Africa thing.

Uhh yea? Why would France need it? Also Sub-Saharan Africa doesn't get as cold as cold at night than it does normally for northern Norway always. Soo yea, France doesn't need to worry about that. Unless they plan on trying to invade Russia again...

They should have given the M4A1 a shot. The US trials actually had the M4A1 and the H&K split reliability testing (rumored, as the 2nd place rifle was't official revealed). The H&K apparently had less malfunctions overall but more major malfunctions. In other words, the M4A1 had malfunctions the operator could clear more often, but less malfunctions that needed an armorer to fix. Of course the US kept the M4A1, but the H&K was apparently very good, and better in some respects.

>>31167706
I wonder which rifle got second. I'd guess the H&K or the Colt C7. Do you know?
>>
>>31167370
I've been saying the HK416 would win in all those threads since the beggining of the competition.
It was to be expected, the German lobby is balls deep into the decision makers of the French military, as well as in politics. There are probably several generals and MPs who shilled to the max in exchange for a paid travel with their families, a new car, etc. That's how things work in France, corruption and lobbying.

Furthermore, since the SF use it, the troops all got a hard on for it, and it has become popular in the movies and video games they like so, I guess the average grunt is jizzing in his pants right now.

As for the weapon itself, obviously it was a bad idea. Just a standard AR with a piston slapped on it, that requires removal of the handguard to disassemble, that is much heavier, and has got many proprietary parts to make sure that you can only buy spare parts from HK at a premium price. I can't even imagine the price of the guns themselves.

If you're going to go for a piston AR with proprietary parts, the Sig MCX was clearly the best choice : as light as a standard AR, has a monolithic top rail, keymod handguard that can be removed simply by pushing a pin out, has a folding stock, a barrel that can be changed by removing two screws, can switch calibers easily, was made to be ran suppressed from the beginning, has already got all the ergo improvements you would want, less expensive than HK.

Hell, a standard M4A1 style rifle with a free floating handguard and SOPMOD stock would have still been a better choice, and much cheaper.

But hey, there is saying in France for the military : they are always one war too late. Meaning that whenever they put something new into service, it is already obsolete and they'll need to buy something else in the near future to correct its shortcomings. Can't change old traditions.

>>
>>31167370
There is a certain logic to this choice. Just to name a few:

Germany is a neighbor and an ally so logistics are pretty much there. The rifle is a compatible with American accessories and and uses the same magazines that the M4 does meaning uniformity when operating with american forces.

There is a great thrive for both European and NATO uniformity. The scandies have went as far as replacing their national uniforms and patterns with a common Nordic one in 2020 and there are rumors about attempts at adapting one rifle for all the nordic military forces but that is going to be hard since the costs are why they are still clinging to their aging rifles currently in use.

Not an issue, as Sig Sauer in Germany could have put up a production line for it, just like they did with the Sig 516. Both the MCX and 516 had made it on the second phase of the tender.

>Rifle fires brass cased cartridge

I predict America will roll out next generation G.I. rifle with next 5-10 years. Probably 5 and it'll be like as follows:

>Polymer cased telescoped cartridges (if caseless not ready)
>inter-intermediate caliber between 6mm-7mm
>Advanced durable suppressors are standard issue
>>
>>31168591
Suppressors wont be standard issue inside the US the forces for awhile, if ever
>>
>>31168591
More durable suppressors or not they still make the gun far more dirty quicker to be reliable for front line use.

>Advanced suppressors

There are MG rated suppressors already. In time, new materials will make them light and compact enough for rifles.

You can't base reliability on current DI AR platforms since the new rifle will be built from ground up. With adjustable gas system, back pressure can be minimized.

Modern battlefields are in urban areas and suppressors would help reduce confusion when firing indoors.

The bongpup takes that title. And the FAMAS is getting replaced by an M16 style rifle right on the heels of New Zealand getting their AUG replaced by another M16 style rifle. The bullpup meme is definitely getting put out to pasture.
>>
>>31168672
Isn't New Zealand replacing the AUG because of cost though? I've not seen alot of complaints about actual performance compared to the FAMAS.

Kiwi forces don't do anything to have performance complaints.
>>
>>31167370
>Germans are building the French's rifles now
le irony
>>
>>31168641
The main issue with the FAMAS is that it was introduced before 1985, when SS109 became the standard NATO round and the AR15 magazine became the defacto NATO magazine.
The G2 did fix those issues, but it was way too late.
>>
>>31168678
Cost mostly. They could have ordered newer Augs and saved on training and administration costs but I believe the request gave preference to conventional layout rifles.

>he doesn't know about French tanks at the beginning of World War 2
>>
>>31168663
The boat gun is better than the FAMAS, lever delayed blowback is shit.
>>
>>31168703
Are you implying that French tanks were the most advanced designs? In the early 30's maybe, but completely outdated by 1939. The only worthwile ones were the Char B1 Bis with its big 75mm gun and thick armor (but high fuel consumption and low autonomy and mobility made it irrelevant), and the Somua S35 with its rolled armor. But French tanks had all the same design flaws overall : typical 3 man crew, in which the commander was also the gunner, overloading him with tasks, lack of radios, weak threads, unreliable engines, many had very low powered guns and thin armor.
This is one of the many causes for the loss of the war, newer designs and improvements were planned, but as always too little too late, just like with guns and planes.

You should read about the subject sometimes, instead of trying to teach people their own history.
