I gotta disagree with you on that pham; the Lebel 1886 is just the previous year's black powder repeater re-chambered for a smokeless cartridge. The rifle design itself didn't bring anything new to the table; it was all in the ammo.

I stand to believe that the French were the biggest badasses of the first world war. They were issued shitty outdated rifles, fought on their own home turf, suffered grueling losses in the meatgrinders, and always did it in style with that suave blue uniform. Just look at those fuckers, they are awesome

Indeed, unfortunately, as usual for the French military, they had to fuck up something totally novel by mixing it with something completely obsolete, in this case, the Kropatschek's tubular magazine.
The two pieces bolt requires a screwdriver to be removed from the rifle, and the whole action is sticky.

Note, I'm not disagreeing in any way.
They were issued the blue uniforms in 1915 the better of a year into it.
They started the war with the 19th style uniforms, blue jackets, and bright red pants. Made them easy to see.
The idea for the light blue was to blend into the skyline when going over the top.

Though being issued new uniforms after being in combat for about a year hit moral pretty hard. Soldiers began to realize the fighting was going to last.
