neither as the swordfish did not sink the Bismark, it only Disabled it. Bismark was sunk by the "King Gorge V" and the "Rodney" only after 700, yes thats right 700 main battery shells were pumped into the Bismark at quite close range.
say what you will about the Bismark being employed improperly without any support Vs the entire Scapa flow fleet but you can say that the Bismark and other ships of her class weren't durable as fuck. like the Tirpitz that took 2 direct hits and 2 near misses from 14,000lbs Tallboy bombs to sink

Now, unless I'm mistaken, the US is situated in North America, a considerable distance over water from the rest of the world.

Both had ultimately the same problem. The ships were too top heavy. Mary rose had too many guns to its weight meaning that the gun ports would take in water when making a too hard of a turn but that is nothing compared to the failure of what was Wasa that had so much (unnecssary) weight on top due to decorations that were demanded by the Kings massive ego that a mere sea breeze was able to capsize the whole ship.
>>31163629
Propellers (or paddle wings) are possibly the most vulnerable part of any mechanized ship past or present. Without propulsion you're a sitting duck.
>>31163699
Lucky shot hitting the ships magazine. This has happened many times in history of naval warfare and the result has always been pretty much the same: Instant kill.
>>31168253
>only after 700, yes thats right 700 main battery shells were pumped into the Bismark at quite close range.
Why stop at 700? Why not 70,000? As long as we are making numbers up, the sky is the limit.

>say what you will about the Bismark being employed improperly without any support
Bismarck was on a commerce raiding mission and it was absolutely proper to deploy alone.
>Vs the entire Scapa flow fleet
Bismarck met two small task forces.
>>31168253
Was it the rudder? I had the recollection that the propellers were damaged meaning the ship couldn't move.

Say you're America and and you want to project your power against your enemies.
Being on an isolated continent, fighting people very far away, an aircraft carrier is necessary.
Say you're Russia/India/Europe/Saudi Arabia and you want to project your power against your enemies, you don't need an aircraft carrier, you're not isolated and your enemies are nearby.

>to be fair it was struck by over 70 torpedoes that had zero effect before it was struck by one torpedo in the rudder.
no it wasnt, it got hit once, a lucky shot in driving wind and rain that happened to hit and jam badly designed steering gear.
>neither as the swordfish did not sink the Bismark, it only Disabled it. Bismark was sunk by the "King Gorge V" and the "Rodney" only after 700, yes thats right 700 main battery shells were pumped into the Bismark at quite close range.
not all of which hit, the KGV stayed at range for most of the short engagement using plunging fire, thus her accuracy wasnt great and rodney while closer was still trying to hit a moving target in heavy seas, and only closed to close range (3000 yards) after disabling all of bismarcks guns.
the principle problem of sinking any battleship with gunfire is getting hits below the waterline, bismarck had settled so that her belt armor was also below the water line.
she was finished off with torpedoes
