Hello guys and gals! after roughly 5 years my get home/edc bag is starting to wear out, and I was wondering what would you recommend as a replacement pack? I was using the condor tactical sling bag but I'm thinking of returning to the more traditional back pack. any suggestions? i need something that can handle a 15in laptop and is rugged enough any ideas are appreciated thanks!

fun story: a few weeks after coming back from a trip to canada, I went to the state fair (commiefornia) with my aunt and cousins. I went digging through my bag and opened one of the concealed carry pockets and my k-bar knife fell out...that got through 2 airport security screenings and a search from the security at the state fair.

The 24 and 72 are shit bags. Only ppl who think other wise, tend to be ppl with no experience with any other type of packs.

Even when the thing is completely empty, it weighs like six pounds.

Owned all three, used each one every day for several months. Sold them after test and review.

No they won't.

Even if that shit's on the books, if you honest to God stop the next mass shooter mid-massacre, they'll drop it, they're not going to charge a guy who saved dozens of lives, that's just bad PR.

Now, the news isn't going to talk about how guns save lives, but they'll have a story about how terrible cops are, and the police won't want that.

>>
>>31170746
it all really depend on what your doing.

for sheer tactical shit
the flat pack falls flat
AWS beaver tail pack doesn't all better IMO

for Civilian world
the flat pack is just too small to carry laptop waterproofs and my dragon dildos, plus it's the equivalent of those fuck silly packs women tend to wear innacities.
I can get by better with an average 30L or 25L hiking pack.

airplanes
I just bring along a briefcase and my small day pack

I don't know what you want to use the flatpack for, but to me, it just doesn't hold water.

So I managed to find myself an old ALICE pack in good condition--medium size, still attached to the frame. It's proven itself nice and handy, though it has that distinct milsurp funk about it. What can I soak/wash this thing in to help dissipate that smell?
>>
>>31161745
This.

In a self defense scenario just shoot to fucking kill. Otherwise the guy may sue you for stopping his would be terror spree
>>
I drank the milsurp koolaid for years too.

Then I got an /out/ job that involves hiking an average of 100 miles a month and living innawilderness most of the time. If you like the tacticool aesthetic that's fine, do your thing, but you look like a try-hard.

I have an 85L REI-brand pack with an aluminum frame that compresses down a LOT when it's not full (it's never full because 85L is hueg), and a 25L Osprey daypack that folds down to nothing.

/greyman/ af, plus infinitely better re:weight distribution & comfort. Sure, an ALICE is more rugged but it's also a 35L (for a medium, though the large is even heavier with shittier weight distribution) pack that weighs more than my 85L, which is holding up to substantial abuse.

And I guarantee that unless you're active-duty infantry somewhere, and maybe even then, I'm abusing my gear harder than you are.

Whats your job? When i get out i want a job hiking and living in the woods, sounds like a dream to do that. Im going for a bio degree because i figured that was the best combo of /an/ and /out/, im only in my first year so if you have a better suggestion im all ears.

If all else fails il just try to be a game warden i guess, im not too keen on LE though.
>>
>>31183147
I'm on a USFS trail crew in a captial-w-Wilderness area, meaning no mechanized equipment, and 10-hour days of hard manual labor in intense, isolated areas at high altitudes with traditional tools (picks, pulaskis, axes, and crosscut saws). It's hard fucking work (I'm 5'10, 175lbs, and I'm eating ~6000 calories/day to maintain my weight) but I love it. It's definitely not just getting paid to hike around but I get to do a lot of that too. The majority of trail work is a lot less backcountry than the stuff I do, however...

If that sounds good to you, there are a lot of organizations that partner with the Forest Service that make good ins. Personally, I started out doing Conservation Corps, which is shit pay but you meet the right people.

Game Warden's a pretty cush gig if wildlife bio is your field. Sampling in the summer is basically getting paid to hike around and count animals.

Wildland firefighting's another way to be /out/ that pays pretty well, but again it can be tough to snag a spot on a crew.

Personally I'd like to get into surveying. Then I'd actually just be getting paid to backpack around with a GPS in my pocket.

If you're still working on a degree and wanna be /out/, wildlife bio, GIS, Forestry/Conservation or Environmental Sciences are all good degrees to have but not mandatory.
>>
>>31177880

anything maxpedition makes is decent, it's just going to be expensive for what it is.
>>
>>31183655
Thanks for the answer man, ive got three years left on my airforce contract and im trying to get a degree before im out, dont want to be too far behind my old highschool pals you know?

I think il stick with wildlife bio and maybe minor in ecology.

All those jobs sound pretty dope. I was just wondering earlier today how id get a job making trails for the nps, i guess trail blazing for the usfs is close enough.
Game warden would be super sweet if i didnt have to do any law enforcement and could just collect data for tags and conservation efforts. Im a cop right now and dont enjoy most of it. Im sure a civ cop is way different but i just have a bad taste for it
Il look into surveying. I just started getting back into camping and hiking since i moved out and forgot how much i enjoy it.
