So I decided to refinish a stock I have. I stripped and sanded it down to bare bleached wood and I plan to linseed oil it but I want it dark. So I want to know if mixing fine powdered dry dirt in with the oil and rubbing it into the wood a viable option? Or is Staining better? Wanna make it look kinda old

Way to defeat the whole purpose of refinishing idiot.
Should have just left it the way it was aka old.

Do not finish your rifle stock with dirt.

Be honest, anon, you got this idea from a senile uncle or something, didn't you?

depends on the look your going for i once refinished a bunch of garands for the american legion they wanted a fresh out the crate look so i repainted all the metal to a parkarized finish and used linseed on the stock after it dried I used 0000 steel wool on the stock to dull the shine of the linseed
Not op, but I always wondered.
Can you stain a stock before you apply linseed oil? That would give it a darker color. But would the linseed oil soak in?

tom's pine tar mix. one of the few products that will give you a nice matte finish like military weapons are supposed to have. easy stuff to work with too.

No, the oil needs bare wood. a poly stain would fuck it up

Yes, just don't use a waterproof stain. There are a ton of options for stains that don't seal.
