What's k's opinion on the Zastava m48? Looking to get into more centerfire rifles but in college so I'm 80% broke. Short of paying thousands for a good k98 the m48 seems like a good starting point and the action is so much better than a nugget
>>
>>31114101
You can probably get a nice used 22 for that much. Or save a bit more and get an SKS
>>
Why the hell would I get a .22? If I wanted to pop squirrels in the woods I'll use a pellet gun.

I've never liked the semiauto feel compared to a bolt's solid lockup. I've always wanted a good, older bolt gun with wood furniture but the Mosins never did it for me. I was lucky enough to fondle a genuine k98 of my friend's grandfather's but there's no way I can afford a good one. The Yugo Mausers seem like solid facsimiles to the original and 8mm is big enough for game hunting
>>
>>31114101
While I love my Yugo Mauser, I would say you are better off saving up and building/buying a cheap AR. The days of cheap to buy and shoot milsurps is gone.
>>
>>31114318
My friend has one and it's pretty much a K98. 8mm is hard to come by so should probably reload.

Overall its much better than the garbage rod and costs like 60 bucks more. The swiss K11's and K31's are also good for around the same price.
>>
they're fine but not really worth $280
>>
>>31114101
delay the gratification, save up 3 times as much and get an AR15. Don't be a nigger.
>>
>>31114101
>Milsurp for your first centerfire rifle
No. If you just want a bolt gun, get a Savage 110 or Axis or a Ruger American or something.
>>
do they make .308 conversion kits for any notable surp rifles? Enfields, Mausers K31s ect.
>>
>>31114513
Why not just buy a 308 rifle to begin with?

A Russian-captured Kar.98k is about $400-600 these days, so if you don't mind force-matched numbers and ruby shellac you can still get one. Yugo Mausers are fine; solid rifles with the Commie-era ones showing workmanlike if not refined craftsmanship in their fit and finish. 8x57IS Mauser is not as common as it was 5 years ago; most of the online surplus got bought up in the Great Happening of 2012 and what remains has greatly inflated in price. New-production is available from PPU and S&B for reasonable prices.

Get the rifle that will make you happy.

You can build them for half of that.
Pic unrelated

>>
>>31114101
I have an M48.

Not a bad gun, but the bolt isn't as smooth as my pre-war 91/30. Good 8mm ammo is also harder to come by.
>>
>>31114629
if you want a smooth gun you need to go for an enfield.
>>
>>31114101
It's not a bad rifle itself but you may learn some bad habits starting on full power rifle centerfire.
You won't be able to do a whole lot of volume of shooting because of the price of ammunition.

A rimfire or intermediate caliber rifle would both be better choices on both accounts, that said my first rifle was a K98, shrug.
>>
>>31114566
I just bought a Kar98 for $420

Also got a big box of 7.92 ammo in spam can
>>
>>31114435
K31s are 700$ these days
M48as are 200
This isnt the same price

Hey guys, is it easy to change a barrel on a Mauser variant ?
Also, only the bolt head and barrel would have an effect on headspace right ?
Or are there any other parts that might get worn over time ? I don't live in a free country so there's a lot of paperwork and money involved, I'd like to know what I'm getting into before purchasing a milsurp rifle. Was considering one of those in .308, Pic unrelated.
>>
>>31114470
>>31114350
I might be in the extreme minority, especially on /k/, but I honestly don't want an AR. My brother has one, I've shot it plenty but it's never felt as good in my hands as a older bolt gun, milsurp or not.
>>31114471
I've been looking at the Ruger 77 Hawkeye and the Savage Axis 111, but I'm not particularly sold on either one. I'm not gonna have the time to do much hunting during the semester so it's probably just gonna be a range gun for now. I just hope to get a good rifle before shit gets fucked up in three months
>>
>>31114783
Just get a normal bolt gun dont ruin a surp
>>
>>31114726
>K31s are 700$ these days
Maybe if you are retarded
>>
>>31114796
I don't intend to ruin anything, but I don't really care about matching numbers and want to know if I come home with a seriously abused one, I can fix it.
>>
>>31114790
>y but it's never felt as good in my hands as a older bolt gun, milsurp or not.

I kinda understand this, I prefer to shoot bolt action milsurp over my spooky salt weapons
but if you want one in .308, go Ishapore or FR8, don't bother rebarreling
>>
>>31114811
I got all 10 of mine for 90$
But im sure youve been following the average prices better than me
>>
>>31114790
>I might be in the extreme minority, especially on /k/, but I honestly don't want an AR. My brother has one, I've shot it plenty but it's never felt as good in my hands as a older bolt gun, milsurp or not.

I, too, know that feel.
>>
>>31114790
In that case look into getting a Mauser that was converted to 7.62. You get the feel of a milsurp but without the extreme cost to shoot and you can find ammo more reliably (not including the internet). Look into either Spanish or some of the Latin American Mausers for that.
>>
>>31114513
Lot of Spanish Mausers come in .308
>>
>>31114318
>Why the hell would I get a .22?

Ugh. To learn the fundamentals of marksmanship and proper care/maintainance of firearms, maybe? Because they are cheap to feed and every bit as fun (arguably more) than a centerfire rifle?

You can get bolt-action .22s with solid wood stocks for very reasonable prices.
>>
>>31115919
Maybe I should've been more upfront-
I have two Stoeger o/u, a Ruger sr1911, a cheap S&W SD9, and my first gun was a Marlin .22 magnum rifle that I sold for a m887 Remington and I've shot my bbrothers AR and his Winchester 94. I'm not that much of newfag.
>>
>>31114790
iv bought 8mm hotshot for about $0.43 a round recently so i dont think its impossible to shoot pretty cheaply, theres still surplus round to just look around online before you buy ammo.

>I might be in the extreme minority, especially on /k/, but I honestly don't want an AR
nah i agree with that, milsurp is just more satisfying to me
>>
>>31114817
its doable but its not going to be easy and probably end up costing more than the gun did in the first place
its not a drag and drop oh heres a barrel heres a receiver screw it together and we are done deal
gotta machine the front of the receiver and the barrel its going to be hell if you want the sights to line up
>>
>>31114811
You looked at gun broker lately, 4 to 700 dollars man. K11s are still cheap though.
>>
>>31114566
>>31114717

Not to shock you but classic firearms just got a shipment of about 40 something Russian Capture K98s and they all sold between $700 - $1000 in less than a day

I'd stay away from that shit. It broke the extractor on my 24/47. If it works fine go ahead but if the bolt gets really stick than I'd advise to stay away.

you don't have to pay thousands for a k98. if that's the one you want get it. I wasted my time getting a mauser that wasn't the one I wanted. Save up or shut up.

Lol, I paid less than that for my Gew.98. I don't know how Classic convinces people to pay for their overpriced (maybe they got some tips from Don Mitchell), but just check completed auctions on Gunbroker for a record of more reasonable transactions.
