45-70 vs 30-30 lever action. What is best?
.30-30 for medium and large game. .45-70 for large, dangerous game.

30-30 is good on up to black bear, bigger than that and you'll be better off with a 45-70.
If you find em used you can get both calibers in a Marlin for $1200 total or less so why not get both?

.357 Magnum
30-30 is more practical. Cheaper and you can shoot it all day long, it'll put down whatever you lob it at well enough.
45-70 is for manly men who do manly men things like hunt tyrannosaur and reload their own rounds.
.32 Winchester Special so no one else but you can feed the gun

Or...in the Canadian prairies 90% of farmers/hunters carry 30.06. Just saying...

45-70 does everything a 30-30 can do, does it better, and more. I don't think anyone is doing tons of practice with a 30-30 so the expense and recoil are not legitimate drawbacks, in my view.
How bad is the 45-70 for longer range shooting? I imagine since it isn't as round nosed it sucks at more than 50 yards.

Fuck awful rainbow trajectory, by 300 yards drop is measured in feet not inches.
That being said, it retains energy well, with a proper understanding of the weapons trajectory and good adjustable sights long range kill shots are possible.
If you're going lever action with old cartridges like this you want a 45-70, because they are awesome. If for some reason you bought a lever to be practical, pick a newer chambering or go 30-30. Either way you're gonna have a lot of fun heyyyy

Depends on your definition of "long range."
At 200yrds it only drops 6".

Pic is the trajectory of the old 405gr. Modern loads are lighter and travel 50% faster.

What's the star?

Yeah, there's no real reason to pick a .30/30 over the .45/70. Both are going to recoil like a bitch in a light gun and both will be comfortable in a proper one. Ammo is about the same cost where I'm at, maybe $5-10 dollars more for the hot .45/70 loads but they're worth it.

LOOK I CAN DO IT TOO
.30-30 for light recoil, ability to remove deer, and availability everywhere. .45-70 if you need to take out some bigger stuff or go to a cowboy match.
