Replace the FSB with a low-pro gas block, if I can, move it to mid-length instead of carbine position. Move the front handguard retainer to original rifle-length position. Throw in a flip-up front sight w/ rail grabber. Swap the A2 grip out for one of those "customizable" jobs with different widths, textures, etc. I think that'd do it.

I take a M4A1, remove the FSB, install a free floating DD handguard, enlarged trigger guard, B5 SOPMOD stock, Tango down pistol grip, flash suppressor with QD suppressor and done. Yeah that's basically a M4A1 SOPMOD block II. And there is no need for anything else.

really just make it ambi and call it good. Maybe swap out all old KAC quad rails for lighter weight Daniel Defense Quad Rails. I'd stick with the Aimpoint Comp M4 as the primary optic, even keep the M4 profile barrel (203's are still in use and these barrels have their place) replace all the Maytechs and KAC's with Troy rear sights. I'd keep the safe, semi, auto trigger groups. Lastly, maybe Cerekote them FDE.

Would still run them with GI mags (so long as they had anti-tilt followers). The M4A1 is a good rifle, but using lighter quad rails and making it ambi is really the only things you could do to make it better.

Basically I went for the "M4 Plus" route.

Being cheap isn't the only reason that gear is standardized. Shit can happen that breaks something on your special snowflake rifle that makes you have to grab someone else's (or it's a situation where you're just grabbing the nearest gun to you). Significant differences between the weapons can result in enough of a difference in your ability to accurately and efficiently fire that weapon that you get you and your buddies killed.

Rail mount M320's are lighter (but bulkier) than barrel-clamp M203's.

Going to a freefloat tubular modular handguard with A2 FSP, going to a gunner profile mid-gas barrel, and swapping the stock to something like the SOPMOD will shave over a pound off the rifle.
