Pretty excited /k/.
I finally moved from Jew York into Freedomsylvania. Got my established residency and am going to pick up my first handgun in a couple days.

What kind of things should I expect for upkeep of my handgun, what lube to use (grease vs oil), what things I need to buy for my handgun.

If it helps any I am picking up a 92FS.

Also any PA bros in Tioga county know of any good ranges near Wellsboro?
>>
>>31097476
>92FS
good choice.
modern pistols are pretty impervious to things like rust if you keep them at least moderately cared for.
lots of good lubes/cleaners out there.
Ballistol, break free, Rem Oil, 3in1 oil,, hoppes #9

there an infographic out there somewhere that allegedly shows the diifferences of the performance and rust prohibiting abilities of various lubes. but i dont know where it came from or if its even remotely legit
>>
>>31097548
basically i can go for a year or more without cleaning/lubing my P226 if its just sitting in tjhe closet and it always looks as good as new
>>
>>31097548
I have heard of people using lithium grease or high viscosity motor oil. Is that in anyway acceptable on a firearm?
>>
>>31097633
i dont think large amount of lube or thick goopy lube is a good idea.
lubing guns lube should be kept to a minimum, because of reasons.
>>
>>31097690
Anything in particular besides ammo and mags that I need to buy for my firearm?

Holster of some type. Which ever one will suit you and your needs.
>>
look up the "D spring mod" anon.
You're welcome.
>>
>>31098564
What a bitch
>>
>>31098545
At the risk of being total gear queer, where can I find a decent duty/combat belt like yours.
>>
A good, light mineral oil is best for oiling exterior surfaces and lubing small parts like the safety.
A cheap tub of hi temp bearing grease will go well on the rails, just a dab each time you give the gun a thorough cleaning.
Your gun should come with a small cleaning kit. Get some 9mm cleaning patches and a jar of Hoppe's 9 solvent for cleaning the bore.
92s are sensitive to lubing- it's a 70's version of a WWII design after all. It will be dead reliable if you keep it oiled and greased, though.

Belts have been trendy among shooters lately. They offer all the fancy quick-to-reach utility without making us look like fucking nutters in a full pals vest. I fucking love it, honestly. Handy even if I choose not to wear it and just have it nearby.

There's a fuckload of different options for belts, but mine is the High Speed Gear Sure-Grip padded belt.

www.highspeedgear.com/hsgi/sure-grip-padded-belt-31PB.html

If I were to do it over again, I would get the slotted one so that I can put my Blackhawk! Serpa on it and just fuck off with my G-Code.
>>
>>31098601

Why?
>>
>>31098671
Ok, what kind of mag pouches do you suggest for standard 15rd 92mags? I see you have cloth/canvass but I worry about mag retention.
>>
>>31098671
Also how good of a quality are the Blackhawk holsters? Or should I drop the money on a leather 92FS patrol holster?
>>
92's are great OP, good job.
Just a few things I do recommend you go ahead and swap out.
>Plastic guide rod to a steel one
>Hammer Spring to D hammer spring.

>>31098714
On the belt I have TACO pouches, which have been doing a very good job holding my magazines. They are adjustable enough to account for any slack in retention over time.

>>31098734
>Also how good of a quality are the Blackhawk holsters?
That's up to you, I guess. I like my Blackhawk holster, but it's not made of kydex. It feels more like regular ABS plastic, vs my G-Code which is Kydex and a hell of a lot tougher.

I like it, though. I like its retention system. I don't see it as being a bad choice as a starter holster, honestly.
>>
>>31098873
Ok thanks, it's nice to finally have a thread on this board that isn't tripfags spamming shitposts left and right.

Le 46 Corrosion Test? A good read if OP has the time
>>
>>31098564
Fuck that guy. "D Spring" should be first upgrade any 92/m9 owner does.

Outside of the spring OP consider looking at thinner grips, Wilson Combat parts, holster
>>
>>31097548
Rem oil and 3in1 are pretty trash actually
>>
>>31098714
>what kind of mag pouches do you suggest for standard 15rd 92mags

I suggest dropping them and picking up 18 round MEC-GAR mags.

A mag is still a mag, breh. If someone ever pulls off C&Cing a 92, you're using the factory mags or fuck it.

>>31099353
>Fuck that guy. "D Spring" should be first upgrade any 92/m9 owner does.
Why the FUCK didn't anyone ever fucking tell me this? All this time ordering AR shit from Brownells I could have had it done by now..

Plenty of fags telling me "hurr safety/decocker is gey" but never one mention of this spring change.
>>
>>31099511

18 rounders aren't extended, they're flush like the 15s. The MEC-GAR 20s are extended, though.

And if you meant reliability, they're reliable enough that every civvie 92 shooter and their mothers use them, including the LA Sheriff's Department.

>didn't know about D spring

Grab a Wilson Combat TCU while you're at it.
>>
>>31099511
Noticeable difference with the new spring. For what its worth the WC parts on Brownells are usually cheaper than the official site (WHEN in stock). Happy shopping hombre
>>
>>31099562
>18 rounders aren't extended, they're flush like the 15s
Then I have some bizarro schizophrenic fucking Mec-Gars. Marked to 18 but hold 19 and have a baseplate that says "+2"

>>31099562
>Grab a Wilson Combat TCU while you're at it.
I'll think about it.

>D-spring is only $6.00

>>
>>31099788
You can get a PX4
changeable backstrap and honestly better shooting than my 92
>>
>>31099693

A MEC-GAR with a fat as shit baseplate that says "PLUS 2" indicates to me that yours are 20s.

For real, go look up the current 18 rounders. They're more-or-less flush and everybody has them.
>>
>>31099894
>For real, go look up the current 18 rounders. They're more-or-less flush and everybody has them.

I see that now. I'm assuming Midway lied to me and listed them as 18rounders, hence my confusion.

Meh.
>>
>>31099910

Have you tried squeezing another round in them yet to see if they're really 20s?
>>
>>31099927
Yes. They will fit 19 at the most.
>>
>>31099932

Weird. Might be old gen stuff or a fucky follower?
>>
>>31099876
>You can get a PX4

I actually want one. But I'm waiting for the compact carry to be released.
>>
I am thinking about an m9, but I want night sites as the gun will be both range and HD. Has anyone had a gunsmith do this for them?

The PX4 looks great, especially the .40 G version too.

I was also thinking about the FS, but then I would have the same problem and plastic parts to replace.
>>
>>31100321
Brigadier, the 92A1, the Vertec, and the M9A3 have removable sights. All others have either removable back sight or non removable sights.
>>
>>31099693

Can't remember if I have a D spring or a mainspring from a 1911 in mine....not sure how you didn't know about this anon.
Also OP. You can do upgrades and that's cool and all....but it will work fine the way it is, no need to go crazy swapping out parts right out of the gate.
>>
>>31100335
Thanks! I'm a California resident. I am not sure if the Brigadier on the roster is still being made, but that might be the only option.
>>
>>31100411
No prob. I'm behind enemy lines as well, and you can still get brigs, I have an inox, and the last time I was at my lgs they had a bruniton one in their pistol case.
>>
>>31097633
Hey Beretta bro

goopy grease will stop up guns in the cold and is more likely to cause dirt/sand and other shit to stick if you drop it. You can't overlube a gun (most guns will run just fine wet) but you can use the wrong type of stuff for your enviornment.

Go with Ballistol. Cheap and all purpose.
>>
>>31097966
a holster, I own a M9 and you can get cheap versions of the military holster that will fit your beretta on Amazon.

>>
>>31097476
no need to go crazy with the lube. its not rocket science, just a drop of oil on either side of the frame in the rails, and maybe a drop under the hammer

buy some bulk ammo for cheap, usually runs ~$200 bucks per 1,000 rounds

>>31097633
if you use grease on the moving parts/rails, only use a dab, and then wipe it off. there will be a micro coating left on the metal, thats all you need. too much grease/oil and you start collecting grit/powder residue/dirt/lint/dust and just make a mess of things, not to mention you affect reliability
>>
>>31099562
How's the WC TCU?

I had a Wolf unit and I took it out, made the pull feel like shit
>>
>>31099353
eeeehhh it's a good idea but not mandatory. You can train with it and get used to it.

If you're swapping springs might as well pick up a WC spring kit, mod that bitch out to the max. Maybe a steel trigger to help with the feel (my M9 comes with a polymer one and it kinda seems to flex at times, upgrading to all steel parts).
>>
>>31099751
have you handled one? I wear a medium sized glove and the beretta fits me well.........like a glove.
>>
>>31100141
according to the website they've been out m8
>>
>>31099751

M9A3 has Vertec grips
>>
>>31100141
I wouldn't recommend the PX4 for carry unless you're going to put it in a shoulder holster or something. It is probably the widest handgun on the market due to its rotating bolt operation, so it's pretty fat for IWB carry.
>>
>>31097476
Much like OP, I've bought my first gun as well.
Except I got the 92FS compact.
How much of the advice in this thread applies to the compact?
>>
>>31098944
I also have the blackhawk serpa holster and I like it. It works well for open carry and it's relatively cheap and you won't have a long ass lead time to order one.
>>
>>31103853
>serpa

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3kJ6SU3ycs
>>
Obviously you have limited mental capability, so I'd skip the autos and get a good used .38, and if you aren't willing to pay for a good course, skip the gun altogether. Get a can of bear spray.
>>
>>31097476
>what lube to use (grease vs oil)
I just fucking ctrl+f'd "frog" expecting to see at least a single goddamn hit, and NOTHING!

Get you some froglube, OP. It's real expensive and it smells good.
>>
>>31104313
it's literally just coconut oil you idiot, scented and put in a pretty bottle to sell to /arg/ types.
>>
>>31097476
Are you the guy I told about Blak Forge Armory?
>>
>>31104326
It's got other stuff in it to keep it mostly liquid at room temperature, don't forget the food coloring too.
http://www.dayattherange.com/?page_id=3667
Still kicks the shit out of most other lubes. Haven't heard of any tests of straight coconut oil, though.
>>
>>31104358
Not really. Even that page shows it's only about as effective at lubrication as WD40, which isn't even a lube (and terrible as a lubricant).
Whoever wrote this page doesn't seem to understand the key differences between grease and oil. Even cheap bearing grease will serve far better than an organic oil.
>>
>>31103853
>serpa
>admits to open carrying

As a friendly tip, please do not listen to this guy.
>>
>>31104392
I'll admit the test isn't well designed in terms of "This is what happens when your gun fires", but it's a decent alternative. Corrosion resistance is an added bonus, and because Froglube is thicker than WD40 it should last longer. If you really want to criticize Froglube I think the whole "random polymerizations" bit is the biggest concern, especially if you're new to guns, trying out new lubes, and are careless with removing it or don't know where it might end up.

A firearm's moving parts are going to spend the vast majority of the time not moving. I think the usefulness of bearing grease is overstated there when you consider how the lube handles fouling and how it protects against corrosion.

Unrelated (I don't know any ranges near Wellsboro) but we go up there every year camping at Pettecote Junction which is probably 30 mins from wellsboro. Wellsboro is an awesome city, make sure you go to the candy store there. The camping store is pretty cool too.

For a cheaper alternative, the Beretta/Stoeger Cougar is a great gun, a mix between the PX4 storm(ugly imo, polymer) and the 92fs(big and heavy). You can find them used for 300-400$
>>
>>31098564
Or he could just shoot his gun and break it in soften the springs instead of having a handicap
>>
>>31097476
Solid choice. Keep it well oiled and cleaned. Just get a basic cleaning kit for it and enjoy your solid 9mm.

>>
>>31108479
Go on. Alternative takes are always interesting. Tons of people promote the D spring. What are the disadvantages?
>>
>>31098944
I hate mine. The scratchy hollow sound, the scratches on my slide. It lost its appeal quickly, the retention system is cool but I'd trade it for a cheap box of .223 man. I'm talking wolf shit. I just used the pancake part and put it through my pants not a battle belt but it felt pretty cheap/bad whenever I ran, like I'd have to adjust my gait/speed. Got a leather galco snap holster sure it doesn't look tactical at all but I'm happier with it. Maybe I'll paint it in a camo pattern hmm.
>>

Every time I look at the Wilson Combat website my wallet cries .
