Why is Turkey using old Pattons instead of its Leopard 2s in its Syrian operations? The hull is just plain steel, and the ones Turkey have deployed don't appear to have any ERA. That makes them vulnerable even from the front to virtually any HEAT warhead around, including ancient ass RPG-7s and recoilless rifles.
>>
Presumably they're keeping the best equipment with the forces that are still in Turkey and can counter another coup.

And for reference a high res picture of them from 2014 where you can see it's just the plain steel hull and turret.

are they digging for a mummy?
>>
>>31096359
They, like all other Arab militarys, are shit at war.

They, like the country they are invading, are going to use their shit equipment to show the world how shit they are at war.

Meanwhile, the US and Russia will get to train their aircrews on how to effectively bomb brown people and will chest beat on how effective their ground attack sorties are.
>>
>>31096359
Cheaper, a Patton loss against insurgents is much more manageable than an imported Leopard 2.
>>
Same reason Russia had sent old shitty tanks in Georgia in 2008. It's enough for it, and if it gets destroyed it's not too bad since it's one less old and expensive tank to maintain.
>>
>>31096427
>>31096418
These and against insurgents with limited AT capabilities, it's good enough.
>>
>>31096427

Yeah I remember there were some T-62s serving as fire support vehicles.

They're updated m60's. Nothing to scoff at.

because they can sweep ditches and are better in literally every way to the leopard 2

Literally the exact same cast steel as from the 1960s.

Because they don't want to risk using their expensive Leopard 2's, they don't even have them upgraded like the Canadian and German ones to deal with mines and AT weapons.

Nothing else to say really,

I guess OP just hates M60s

IS has plenty of ATGMs and even some captured tanks
They're a lot more heavily armed than the Iraqi insurgents of the 2000s
>>
>>31097331
Apparently NVG and laser rangefinder existed in the 60s
>>
>>31096359
The actual reason is that the arrangement with Germany prohibits their use in South Eastern Anatolia, because they kinda support the Kurdish insurgency in Turkey and Turkey kinda wants to lick their butts. Unfortunately I couldn't find a reference to this, but I'm about 80% confident. So the reasons are probably logistical, they probably only had M60s there.

Turkey also has Sabra, which is like super improved version of M60 (at least that's what they claim), so they may also be using those in case of need. But to be honest Turkey has so many tanks and people that I don't think they care.

Also Turkish army is weirdly competent compared to general Middle Eastern tradition. But I also think that they're not going to do the actual fighting themselves, they'll probably use Syrian opposition and others as spotters and provide artillery fire and such.
>>
Turkey keeps most of its Leopard 2's on its East/Northeast border, for obvious reasons when you think about it.

Those were the units it had in the area.

Diesel engine tanks csn be worked on much easier, run cheaper, and can go 24hrs without refueling. Turbine tanks need fuel every 4 hours.

When your logistics are fragile, and you have the choice, send the diesels.

That's just some propaganda videos. They had some kornets and chink/iranian copy of Tow (which they got from SAA weapons' caches), but supply is running short and they only use them less and less

Even iran-made Tow copy costs about 40k each and considering iran's stance on Syria, there's no way they're selling them to sunni fighters
>>
>>31098819
considering those "propaganda" videos sometimes top 3 or 4 a day youre full of shit there are a lot of atgms floating around and more being sent in by everyone with a stake in the war. now isis probably has the least amount of these but they still have enough kornets to seriously fuck with turkish armor if they wanted to but i dont think they want to

Because of logistics and Greeks being the main threat Leopard 2's are mostly deployed in European and closer to European side of Roachistan.

M60's are good enough for whatever might appear in Syria.

>>31098819

ISIS gets their TOW's from FSA, captured from Iraq and gulf states that sponsor 'em all.

>>31100747

Turkey will make some attacks against ISIS to maintain propaganda, but probably focuses it's efforts mostly against Kurds as they are bigger threat against Roachistan.

isis doesnt really get tows, the fsa and isis tend to kill each other and not really get along, what with all the killing each other.
>>
M60A3TTS is enough for threats in Syria

Turkey has almost 2000 M60 tanks and nobody gives a fuck if some tanks are destroyed and some crew gets killed.

Turks know that any attempt to make war safe and easy will end in disaster. So they keep the best gear for harder times.
>>
>>31097909
>The actual reason is that the arrangement with Germany prohibits their use in South Eastern Anatolia

That's a conspiracy theory. Turks deployed Leo2s on Syrian border in case SHTF.

But keeping these tanks in low milage is better.

Turks have the resolve to fight(It's an anomaly for western mind). There won't be any shortage of manpower in Turkey, the median age is 28 and they have like +20 million recruitable men so there is no problem with zerg rushing enemy with M60s

War is wedding of a Turk.
>>
>>31096359
Because the Turks don't want random insurgents posting videos of their nice, new Leopard 2s getting blown up on liveleak. Or the Germans told them not to.

And like everyone else said, Pattons can do the job just as well there.
>>
>>31102641
Leopard 2's are the powder puffs of tanks, never allowed out when the enemy has proper anti-tank weaponry.
>>
They didn't need leopards to take over a barely defended border town. They weren't expecting stiff resistance.

>muh IS insurgents with TOWs etc

They only went in to stop the kurds taking over jarablus, it has nothing to do with IS

IF SAA or Russians bring tanks out against Turks, for Sure Turks will roll out Leopard 2s.

Why does the Patton look like the Normiest of Tanks.

It's like if a child drew a tank, it has the dome shape of a patton turret.

A dozen prototypes were built

Serial production of 1000 tanks will begin by 2017

Here's a more simple reason.

The units on the border are equipped with M60s.

Because it was designed to be immune to 100mm APCBC rounds and other russian stuff like 122mm rounds that was used heavily at the time the M60A1 was designed.

>a child drew a tank
Well that must have been a very smart child to understand how to design turrets to deflect russian tank rounds.
