M1903-Springfield-Rifle (2).jpg

So I have to choose between an M1903, an M1903A3, or an M48.

I would like to get the 1903 because it's the oldest of the three, and I think that's pretty cool; but the 03A3 has better sights.
I'm considering the M48 because it has that sweet mauser action and I like the bigger cartridge, but unless it's that much nicer than the springfields I would really like to have an American rifle as my first.

Do you guys have any imput you'd like to give me?

I hear some of the early 1903s weren't heat treated properly and are dangerous to shoot. Maybe something to keep in mind.
>>
>>31095476

1903A3, there are many 1903s out there that are not safe to shoot. .30-06 is more readily available and plenty powerful and if I'm not mistaken, isn't the 1903a3's action based on the mauser?

Get the M1903A3, that way you can shoot ANY 30-06. 1903s Pre A3 arent weak but I wouldnt put any hot 220g hand loads outa one. Plus 30-06 is panic buy proof. Alot easier to get then 8mm Mauser. There is something about the ladder sight M1903s tho...

M48s are cheap and usually in great condition. Overall they're based.

Pic related is mine I got for $225

30-06 and 8x57 are comparably powerful cartridges. Almost to a tee, really.

03A3 --- has all the perks of the 03 with better sights, m48 is junk compared to either.

>>31095501
>>31095524

goddamn it /k/ stop with the fuddlore bullshit.

the poorly heat treated rifles will still shoot full power loads safely, only an overcharged round would damage them - only 24 receivers were ever documents to have "failed" and that was due to a batch of overcharged ammo from a shitty sub-contractor during WW1.

>he thinks I was defending the Heat Treat meme
wtf dude
>>
>>31095657
I've heard good things about the accuracy of the M48, after all they were literally just license made copies of German mausers; they even used the same equipment as the German factories.
Plus, I really do like the idea of the more powerful round.
What makes you say they're junk?

just don't drop em.
>>
>>31095476
There is no comparing the fit and finish of an arsenal-made peacetime 03 to an A3 banged out in wartime. Your first impulse is correct.
>>
>>31096887
I thought that 8mm would have more energy due its greater mass?
>>
>>31097502
.30-06 can load more in its casing, I think
>>
>>31097514
So 30-06 is better for killing deer at medium range, 8 is better for target shooting anywhere out to 1500 yards to justify your having bought a 100 yr. old rifle?
>>
>>31095476
Liberty Tree M48a ?
>>
>>31097643
Pristine Yugo one.
Swear to god, it looks like it's never been fired.
>>
Get the 03A3, it is the better rifle, and Yugo mausers are cheap, you can get one any time
>>
>>31097799
Don't waste your time on a fucking M48. Get the 03A3.
>>
>>31095476

Do yourself a favor and get the 1903A3. The sights are the best by far, and it'll feed commercial .30-06 (so I've been told). This makes for an excellent general-purpose rifle.

Especially since mounting optics on milsurp rifles is deplorable, the aperture sights on the A3 will allow you to squeeze more accuracy out of the rifle than the tangent sights on the other two.
>>
>>31095476
i choose the 1903 over the A3. at the time i wasnt sure which for the same reason as you. then i looked at the barrels and the A3 looked like shit compared to the 1903. it was very impressed by its accuracy.

ive got shit vision and can use the sights easily. and as long as youre above 800k serial number, theres no chance of a catastrophic failure. get what you like but dont write anything off until youve seen the actual condition of each one.
>>
>>31097502
Both can load the same bullet weights at similar velocities.
>>31097605
They can both do the same things.
>>
>>31095498
This. I had a super early 1903 that was unsafe to even bring to the range for liability reasons. Ended up selling it for a 1943 03a3.
>>
>>31098076
Nigger what
>>
>>31097884
>it'll feed commercial .30-06
Uh... they all do. I think you're confusing it with the Garand.
>>
I can't decide whether to ignore the 03A3 posters or the 03 posters, so instead I'll just save up a while longer and get the M14 with the fun switch poorly wood-glued to the stock (which absolutely positively makes it PERMANANTLY AND IRREVERSIBLY LEGAL I have been told), then just buy both the 03 and the 03A3 once I get done with college and have more cash.

>>
>>31098082
Texas gun ranges or CMP events are anal about letting you shoot early 1903 rifles. Because the receiver is so brittle it can explode without any warning.
>>
>>31098122
Every day milsurp is getting harder to find. If you found it and have the cash, but it while you can
>>
>>31098251
Im sad they still buy into that shit. Im still waiting for an example of a LN 1903 blowing up after 1940
