They refuse to innovate so the market is starting to take over their sales. The ergonomics are not ideal but they refuse to change that either. I guess they attempted something different with the Gen 5 and their inability to make something vaguely new bit them square in the ass. They are overpriced, have bad triggers, and the factory sights are disposable. That is not a $600 package to me when better products are being offered at $200 less. All the other brands that had to design to compete with the Glock standard eventually succeeded and improved on them. S&W had some missteps but they could afford to throw away a few models before hitting on a winner, and every company but Glock went through this to some degree. They won't even make a hammer model so they can sell .22lr versions and people would shell out for those.
