A lot of the magnum handgun calibers really perform well out of a carbine length barrel. 44 mag is more than capable. I myself have a hardie for 357 carbines. With my handloads, I'm getting 1,450 ft/lbs of muzzle energy from a 16" tube. 44 mag will get you a little more

Real 357 loads are true stunners. Basically a 7.62x39. using a 164gr coated lswc, I get 1575fps(903ft/lbs) from a 6" revolver and 2,000fps(1,456ft/b) from a 16" revolver. Real numbers over my chronograph.

I honestly couldnt tell you. I only hunt paper targets. If you are looking at long ranges, look at hornady's FTX bullets in pistol calibers. Im sure a 44mag carries enough energy at 300yd. You just need to make sure you can accurately place those shots for an ethical kill.
