Sup /k/ I just traded my an SKS for a GEW. 88. Does anyone know where I could get ammo for it?
I know you shouldn't use modern high pressure rounds in it since its old.
I'm debating on handloading but I can't really find any info on how many grains or anything.
Also, would 8mm Turk surplus be any good?
>>31073880
take a picture of the top of the receiver and left side of the receiver and Ill give you the run down.
I have owned 4 of those and shot 3 of them.
>>31073880
oh, and Turk 8mm surplus is good ammo for cheap --- it will go bang and is much less likely to hang fire than the Yugo crap.
However, with surp 8mm getting expensive you're better off paying the extra few cents a round (its not like its a semi auto) and buying new production PPU and then saving the brass to reload.

Here is the top side
>>31073880
you will want to slug the bore, the old 8mm that the Gew. 88 was designed for used a .318 diameter bullet the current loads use .323 and should not be fired in an old gun like that unless it was rebarreled for the new ammo yours looks like it was setup for S patrone but best to slug it to make sure

>S shank 1890 Amberg
you lucky bitch. thats a nice rifle.
The S shank at the top means it was rechambered and rebarreled for .323 Spitzer ammo. You can use modern factory loads in it safely.
happy shooting!

>>31073953
can you get one further back? does it say "Gew 88 n/m" on the side of the receiver?
>>31073938
>>31073953
Right
>>31073961
It just says Gew. 88
>>31073948
I figured I might as well take it to a gun smith to have it slugged and get the headspace checked.
>>31073950
Thank man! Can't wait to shoot it!
>>31073990
thats fine, the carbines were always marked "n/m" when they were rebarrel for the modern ammo.
your S shank and the stripper clip charging slot, recessed thumb dip on the receiver and cut at the top of the receiver show that your rifle was rearsenaled as an 88/05 for use with modern ammo, is there a base plate covering the opening at the bottom of the magazine?
>pic is unmodified receiver
>>31074000
NP. gunsmith would be waste of money IMO, but if it helps you sleep at night then go right ahead - you can never be too safe.
you might also want to take it out of the stock, they usually have tons of neat marking on the underside of the receiver.
>>31074018
The magazine floor plate is open and uncovered
>>31073880
>Turk surplus
No. Get your bore slugged to be safe, but most commercial ammo is fine, because SAAMI knows about this risk.
>>31074050
neat.
yea its a mixed bag with those....
88, 88/05, 88/05/15 and then the Turks modded them into the 1930s --- theres almost infinite variants. Yours is an 88/05 though, unless you find turkish marks on the bottom of the receiver.
>>31074050
>>31074060
also i said it before but i wasnt totally clear, but Kaptbilly is right. turk surplus is good ammo, but NOT for a Gew 88, only for 98 mauser actions --- use commercial PPU or reload ammo to their same specs.
>>31074079
>>31074060
Any ammo recommendations besides PPU?
198GR seems a bit too hot
>>31074100
PPU is what I shoot in all my Gew88s and Kar88s and antique guns in general.
if you want lighter....i would suggest loading your own, I dont trust most manufacturers and most of them price gouge to boot. PPU knows their market and they know their stuff is being fired in older guns so they load them light.
>kar88 on bottom
>>31074134
Those are some nice carabines!
I guess I'll have to take a trip to Midway
I bought these to eat up my Turk surplus.
but the bores are really nice and the guns are pretty minty so I feel guilty shooting surplus through them.
so now I have about 850 rounds of turk surplus to either shoot through my Vz24, Turk mauser or sell.
i also give PPU like 4 grand a year for shiny bullet cause im too lazy to use my reloading press.
>>31074100
PPU is fine and probably the best brass you're going to get. But if you want options you have things like Remington. It's made to SAAMI specs so it won't blow up your gun.
Honestly though you should reload. I know I preach this every single thread about milsurp rifles, but seriously, it's the best option.
So is this pretty much worthless and not even good for component use?

that website is from like 1998 - is it a scam?
>>31074250
Turkish surplus had a reputation for being very hot loaded. I personally wouldn't even use it in a Gew98, let alone the much weaker 88.
>>31074235
Thanks for the info. Its greatly appreciated. Last question, I might sound stupid.
Is the ammo rimmed?
>>31074281
nope
>>31074273
this is correct -- I only use it in large ring 98 actions that I dont care about and arnt worth more than $300. i also wear ballistic eye pro
>>31074250
Personally, I love my Turkish surplus. It's the only remaining ammo that replicates the ballistics of the Imperial German Model 1905 spitzer cartridge (154gr flat-base bullet @2950FPS). It's not good for auto-loaders because the gas pressure curve it generates is not what they're designed to handle, but through bolt guns I find it generally reliable and surprisingly accurate.
>>31074281
It shouldn't be, but be aware that there is 8x57 rimmed. It's a European thing, almost every caliber has a rimmed equivalent because they like their combo guns and drilling rifles and what not. Don't think you'll have a problem with that over on this side of the Atlantic, but be sure to read what you buy.
>>31074314
If Turk ammo is 154gr and PPU is 198gr, wouldn't the Turk ammo be safer to fire?
I'm feeling kinda confused
>>31074446
That only refers to the projectile weight, not the powder charge or the pressure of said cartridge. A grain is a imperial unit of measure, similar to a milligrams.
>>31074479
Oh ok. I feel smarter now. Thanks
>>31073880
>>31073933
Look on luckygunner and sgammo among other places, you should be able to find some cor around 60-70 cents per round.
DO NOT USE TURK AMMO. It's wildly out of spec and unsafe, you could get anything from squibs stuck in the barrel to overpressure rounds risking blowing the gun up. It's not fucking worth it.
What are these things worth? I almost bought one for $150.
>>31073880
now you need to buy another one so its not lonely
>>31074562
This was the only one I found locally. I traded it for a bubbah'd SKS I got for about 200$
>>31074557
Depends on the particular sub model. A pure 88 probably around $600. A Turkish 88/05/35? About $250.

Regarding the claim that Turkish ammo is loaded "hot". It's usually right in line with the specs for the S-Patrone 1905. A couple years are a bit hotter, notably 1941 being about 100fps above normal. BTW, the 1905 S-Patrone generates 44,000CUP chamber pressure; the later sS-Patrone (198gr @2476fps) heavy ball is at 46,000CUP.

Turk ammo gets a bad reputation from the people who stupidly load it into Hakims and FN-49s without adjusting the gas port. Pic related
