What AR-type rifle should I get as an all-purpose gun? I'd be using it for home defense, hog hunting, training courses, SHTF, and as a range toy. Right now I've narrowed down to either an 11.5" 5.56, 16" 5.56, and a 9" in .300 AAC (pic related).

16"
>>
>>31073339
Get a 16 inch. Accurate out to some serious yardage, easily maneuverable in a CQB environment, and shortest legal length without getting an SBR.
>>
>>31073809
What about a pinned 14.5"
>>
>>31074569
you'll see less accuracy out of it at ranges greater than 200yds.

Don't buy into the 300 blackout meme unless you don't mind paying 3x as much for ammo and already have a can for it. Get a 16" 5.56 with a 1-6 optic. That will be about as much versatility as you get out of the platform.
>>
16" in 5.56. Get mags, ammo, a sling, and maybe a light. Dont worry about fancy sights right now, irons will be just fine for the time being. Practice and enjoy.

16in 7.62x39, 20in-24in .223 wylde/7.62 NATO.

Not an AK fan personally. Handled my buddy's VEPR a few times and like it a lot but I want the modularity of an AR
>>
>>31077779

There are a few 7.62x39 ARs, one of which has goofy ass magazines, but I'm not sure how serious >>31076177 was being
>>
>>31077779
All you need is optics, slings and lights/lasers. What do you need modularity for?
>>
>>31073339
16" midlength in .223 with a free-float rail and red dot or 1-x scope
>>
>>31077804

Oh, and I forgot to say, just go with a standard, common 16" for now. Most common barrel length, shoots plenty long enough for you, ammo is plentiful, just get one of the many many basic M4 style ones out there. Figure out what you want it to be once you own it, they're easy to modify, if you want a longer barrel buy a different upper, or if you decide what you want is so different than what you have just sell it and move on. The market for ARs is prolly at an all time high right now
>>
>>31073339
Get the 16 inch one. 223/556 has decent performance out to several hundred yards given the right ammo. Will easily drop a hog with a well placed shot. If you did short barrel it, don't go under 14 inches, 556 loses too much velocity and it's terminal (soft flesh) performance is significantly reduced to the point of being a jumped up 22 mag at 11.5 inches of barrel length. Crazy short barrel (8-12in) was popular back in the 90s with spec ops for greater manuverbility but they stopped since too many guys were getting back up after being shot center mass.
>>
>>31073339
the type that works.
>>
>>31073339
I vote for 11.5", there's plenty of distance with that barrel length.

how often do you shoot farther than 200 meters?
>>
>>31073339
5.56, 18" barrel, government/m4 profile. Light, and irons. Other accessories as you see fit.
>>
>>31080267
Fucking this.
10.5" is waifu length however IMPHO

I mean if you file a Form 1 an AR15 SBR lower you can slap any length of any barrel of any caliber on it, right?

Get some 7.5" 9mm lower just for the hell of it.

Goddamnit, I wanna SBR a Franklin Armory w/ Binary fire system

10.5" is awfully cozy. Only really trust it out to 100 yards due to the drop below 2,500FPS (minimum acceptable velocity for fragmentation w/ M193). Accuracy's still great though

16" midlength really is GOAT
>>
>>31082505
>would only trust out to 100 yards
Very true.

But if it ever comes to the tiny chance you'd need to defend yourself with a firearm, how big of chance would it be the standoff distance would be past 100 yards? That would have to be be some concentrated bolt action fire aimed to kill you.
Nobody is coming for you at those distances. Jamel creeps up because he's more of a lousy shot you could ever be, even with a 5 inch AR.
If you receive sniper fire, I'd want an 18" AR-10 anyway.
You can always throw 16" on a tax'd AR-15 SBR lower.

Shut up, hanf them your money, and buy all the lowers
>>
>>31082701
Buy all the uppers I mean.
And anyone firing from >100yards would only be LEO/MIL or someone very determined to put you in the ground.

Which would never ever happen if you'd be a normal law abiding citizen. And if it happens by accident police would shoot at you from that distance, returning fire aint helping your case
>>
>>31082701
Oh I'm with you, and it's why I think a 10.5" is very viable.

If I had to choose one AR to do everything forever, it'd be a 16" (ideally paired with a handgun like a P2000)

But having a 10.5" to just grab-n-go deal with some shit? Perfect package
>>
>>31077877
10.5 inch uppers are still used by SOF and Navy AFAIK
