What does /k/ think of kill sats/orbital weapons?
it'll probably do the most HP damage to units

Would it be legal for civilians to own one?
NASA actually investigated them and concluded that they'd have about the same energy per weight on impact as conventional explosives, at about a million times the cost.

SHALL

A great way to get Kessler syndrome without any real long term benefit.

Ungodly expensive for jobs better suited to current tech on the ground or in the air.
I can see directed energy weapons being semi-plausible, even though the energy reserves would need to be feckhuge to use it, but nothing physical dropping from the sky. It costs a ton to get each pound into space.

Isn't the whole benefit to it the retention of global strike capability even if our silos are compromised? I see no real downside to being able to strike anywhere at anytime from an orbital defense station.

Space is not like hollywood would have you believe. Satellites are not everywhere at once, nor can they be anywhere at a moment's notice. One orbit in low earth orbit takes approximately an hour and a half, meaning it could take an hour and a half to get in position to fire. Combine that with the fact that anyone with a nice pair of binoculars can see any satellite, and you'll see they offer no advantage over traditional delivery methods. ICBM's have similar transit times, and are not significantly easier to detect.
So basically, orbital weapons are a huge undertaking with no real benefits.

Don't forget the vulnerability of the system itself. It's fairly hard to put something into orbit (it takes more delta V to get into Geostationary orbit than it does to get to the moon, for example), but it's much easier to design an interceptor that only has to get to the right altitude once.
According to Alex Jones satellites are used to decapitate people from orbit
What the fuck was he on
Why don't we just build a space robot the throws old satellites into our enemies?
No need to send a bunch of missile up into space. Just need something with a big throwing arm to knock shit out of obit.

I think they're pretty cool, they kill capital ships and doesn't afraid of anything.

NASA is full of shit.

Utterly defenseless.

>about the same energy per weight on impact as conventional explosives, at about a million times the cost.
Not surprising considering the crazy amounts of energy you can release through 500lbs of advanced explosives.
