The first and only time I went "shooting" I literally couldn't believe I was being given a jacket that held my arms perfectly still so that I could shoot perfectly.

No shit the gear doesn't shoot the bullseye for them. A triply-ply squat suit doesn't automatically let you squat 1200lbs when you put it on either. That's not how the average joe thinks, though. People like to think that they would be capable of the kinds of things these athletes do with enough time and dedication; thousands of dollars worth of goofy-looking equipment distracts from that illusion and diminishes the sport in peoples' eyes. It makes the sport less fun to watch and, in turn, diminishes its popularity.

It's also far removed from the practical utilization of the techniques involved. This is the same reason 3gun is more fun to watch than ISFF, HEMA more fun than Olympic fencing, MMA more fun than olympic wrestling and strongman more fun than equipped powerlifting.

Im going to have disagree with you on some points. Regardless of what theyre wearing bullseye shooting is by its nature a boring sport for most people. It has verly little to no dynamic action that gets the public amped up.
Some of the jackets look cool and the guns are like something out of a scifi movie, i dig the aesthetic i can see why some dont.

I never thought about it ruining the illusion and you make an interesting point there. All of the equipment does make it appear like the bar to enter is superhigh and may discourage people from trying to get into the sport.

As for your last point this may be a semantic argument but i say olympic shooting is the highest display of "practical" shooting technique and skill. The ultimate goal of any shooting sport is to hit your target, doesnt matter if you run/ski between each shot, if its your dinner, if they shoot back ect. If you take a bladed stance in the middle of an iraqi town odds are youre dead before you hit the ground, but if pvt snuffy ignores the fundamentals that olympians have mastered hes wasting shots (im ignoring covering fire because that is not involved in any shooting sport to my knowledge).
I understamd where youre coming from, and in general the more removed the sport is from its closest real life equivelent the worse it is but not in this case. All of shooting relies on the fundamentals, it doesnt matter how many extra things you add to it.

Agreed. This is why I was careful to avoid implicating myself personally in this common opinion. I understand fully that every sport has huge barriers to entry plenty of weirdness to boot. The 12 year-old watching his first WL (or, more likely in our testosterone-bereft times, sprinting) competition has no idea of the thousands (probably millions) of dollars required in coaching, steroids and adjuncts required to be internationally, or even regionally, competitive, however, does not. The successful sports do a good job of hiding those realities which, I think, is a major contributor to their success.

Personally, I wouldn't change things much. I would add some sort of 'dynamic' shooting competition such as 2gun but I agree that the bullseye comps are the absolute refinement of the fundamental shooting skills.

Just do standard IPSC/USPSA stuff. Shoot classifiers only if they want to standardize it a bit more.

Hell, do Steel Challenge if they want to make it more rigid but still interesting. They've got standardized stages and the scoring lends itself well to electronic hit/miss scoring that the IOC seems to love (They already do this at high level Steel Challenge).

I'm a pretty average dude by most peoplesuccessful standards I'm 6'3 260 and squat 475, deadlift 530 and bench 325. I run a half mile in 2:33 in boots and hit usually 9-10 out of 10 man sized targets from 500 yards in the unsupported prone with an ACOG on an m4. I enjoy watching the NFL, mma, strongman, 3 gun and shit like that exactly be used of the reasons you stated. Because I just think "wow look at that guy, he mustve been shooting rounds for days to get that good" or "goddam that defensive end is a monster, he's probably in the gym squatting 5 plates for 20 reps like its nothing".

100m ironsite grouping. 2 sighting rounds followed 4 groups of five rounds with the result being the average of all 4 groups. The rifle is to be the host nations service rifle and ammunition.

2 sighting rounds followed by 5 rounds at 300m prone supported followed by 5 from the unsupported. 5 rounds at 200 kneeling supported and 5 from the unsupported and finally 100 standing, five rounds supported followed by 5 unsupported. Winner is best of 30 in the event of a tie it becomes a sudden death with competitors doing the same as above in reverse order till someone drops a shoot. Rifle and ammo is same as above.

I'd also add a .308 1000m bolt action target shoot and a 9mm 25m pistol shoot with moving targets.

Add in long range centre fire marksmanship. No 2 gun or 3 gun, or cowboy competitions, due to how few countries make it easy to get into shooting. Certain countries will just butcher others, but then again like another anon said, it might pressure countries into being a bit more open on gun laws
