Colt and SA cover pretty much everything you could want in a 1911 as far as quality, features, and function go for a production 1911 and both have "semi-custom" models/lines that go a bit further while still being at a cheap price point.

Past that and you're starting to look at the $2k and well beyond names that are either semi-custom lines or fully custom shops.

Thanks. my price point is $1400 as an absolute maximum but I'd prefer something in the $800-$1000 range ideally. This will be my first 1911 ever and I'm looking to replace what I have already with it.

Are Springfield 1911 made in the US?

I did my research but all the information is a bit overwhelming and wanted advice directly from 1911 users.

Colt or Springfield for sure then.
If this is going to be a one and done purchase as far as 1911s go, I'd max/stretch your budget and go for a model that has some of the nicer features/upgrades you may want.

GI 1911s are fine and all, but they leave a bit to be desired. If you're still interested in Colt/SA, I'd suggest looking at the Colt Combat Unit or the SA Loaded.

Not sure where SA 1911s are made. I know they use parts from Brazil often, I think, but I don't know for sure.
>>
>>31063549

I'm looking for a general purpose 1911 that I can customize myself a little bit. GI models really don't strike my fancy. I'd prefer a flat MSH and the longer trigger.

If I got something on the lower or medium end of the spectrum like a SA and did my own work on them I could make them custom-level overtime? Because I find that idea very appealing. Kind of like starting off from a blank slate and adding better and better parts over time.

Get a Colt series 70 for $800 or so. Enjoy.

If you want fancy bells and whistles get a wiley clapp.

CZ/Dan Wesson made a government 1911 that was very good.
>>

>series 70
that is within my top 3 picks

My first pick at the moment is an STI. Any opinions on them?

Pretty decent 1911 all told.

No MIM parts whatsoever, decent repro as far as modern repros go

sauce?
I handled one and its safety sucked and had CZ's typical finish.

CZ doesn't use MIM parts period, but this being made by Dan Wesson that might change.

I'm looking at buying an older used TRP. The one I'm looking at was made in 2002 (I think). Is there anything I should look out for? What's a good price for one?
>>
>>31065317

If you are going to spend money on a TRP why not just go full retard and get a custom?
>>
Anyone got the pasta for converting a Rock Island into a tack driver? You'll need a match grade barrel, and I think a couple Dan Wesson aftermarket parts, but you end up with a 900 dollar gun that shoots with 1500 precision, with the rest of the cash you can spend on learning the platform with ammo and rangetime and sights if you want.
>>
>>31067855

So theoretically speaking, you can build your way to custom-quality?

Yeah, and its a few Benjamins cheaper than buying that quality pre-built. 1911s are like ARs in that they're pretty popular and there's a spectrum of prices, with a good amount of aftermarket. Key is knowing what to get so you aren't wasting money with rollmark, unless you're buying it as a status symbol, which is fine and kind of what a lot of high end 1911 manufacturers play on nowadays.
However, if you're pragmatic and looking for saving some cash over while still having a goddamn laser pistol, doing a good amount of research and spending cash only on important parts is a better idea. I'm sorry I couldn't find the pasta, but on the Rock Island, you'll want a new
-spring
-Trigger and associated parts to make it match grade
-New extractor wouldn't hurt
-match grade barrel, possibly threaded or with a compensator attached, esp for a Frank Castle look.
-new/upgraded sights, tritium and or fibre optic for better aquisition, accuracy, and tailored to your needs (raised if using a can for instsnce)
Tldr, yeah you can upgrade your way to phenominal shit, but a lot of what makes a NICE 1911 is the manufacturer rollmark, like a Breitling watch.
If you dont care about that, do research and look at parts from Wilson Combat and Dan Wesson. Both are GOAT manufactuers and having them as internals will suite ANY companies frame and slide well, even a COTS Rock Island.
FYI the list I typed out above was from memory and is probably somewhat incorrect. Im too broke to be a 1911 guy right now (college) so I really dont know too many specifics atm

Also sorry for rambling I hope this helps.

price
its like 1200 to 1300 used where I am vs like 1600-1700 for a les baer premier II and les baer/dan wessons are harder to find at a decent price

Springfield armory if you get rid of ILS with a replacement mainspring housing. It basically becomes a series 70.

Also, they decided to switch all firing pins regardless of caliber to a titanium .38 Super. Any trustworthy gunsmith can convert it.
