Hi /k/, first time posting here so forgive me if I trigger you with my stupidity.
My dad is giving me a French WW1 artillery warhead he got from his grandfather. I'm not sure the specific type or anything but it looks like this.
It has engraving on the case and is defused, head and shell come apart to show no powder in it, but he told me that there may also be gunpowder in the top part.
Is it true that these warheads were armed with powder I'm both the top part as well as filling up the bottom shell? Because I'd be paranoid owning it and I'm paranoid just knowing he had it in his bedroom dresser all these years of so.

If I get dubs, you have to put it in a microwave.
>>31041739
depends on what sort of shell it is, but if it is a high explosive shell, then it might have an explosive charge in the warhead as well as the case. I'm not sure what sort of advice to give you since most of the people that can check if it is a live warhead or not would also confiscate it and destroy it if it were, but having it on your dresser is not a great idea until you know for sure. I would try to find a specialist collector's forum instead of /k/, they'll know more than us.
In simple terms, the shit in the case would be propellant, to make the shell fire out of the gun.
But the warhead would also have explosives, to make it go boom when it hits whatever you want dead.

So if the top isn't hollow then it's probably still armed?
Jeez. What's the best course of action then?
>>31041847
Call the fucking Bomb squad!!
>>31041847
Get a big ol hammer and hit the top as hard as possible
If it echos/rings then its empty
But if its a thick thud then the warhead is active

/k/ advice: blow yourself and half the block up
>>31041739
take it out back with a shotgun
only way to deal with the french
Step 1. find real secluded place, like up in the moutains, desert, plains etc.
step 2. shoot it (from far away)
step 3. profit

Keep it for a rainy day

Yep, the 1pdr/37mm was either a solid-shot or a HE filled projectile.
The indicator is if it has a fuze fitted to the projectile (the pointy bullet bit).
The fuze can be on the pointy-end or on the base.
So, if you can examine the projectile and its a one solid lathed lump (with the copper band), its safe to display.
If there are any signs of a seperate fuze - different metals, plugs, holes, etc its probably the HE version.
The HE used back then can become sensitive as it breaksdown and forms crystals etc, so it unsafe to keep.
So, unfortunately, in that case you need to call your nearest police/military bombsquad.
Most countries have a full amnesty on reporting, the priority is getting unsafe EO off the streets before k/unts blow up their toilets or get it wedged up their arses.

that shell was mere feet away from your mom getting fukt by ur dad

Good news, I've identified it.
Looks like a 37mm shell for a Puteaux SA 18, most famously mounted on the Renault FT.
Bad news, the only shell types available were HE, HE-T, APHE, and APHE-T, with the only shell types without an explosive being the AP-T type shell.
I'll try and ID it further, but yes, there's a good chance you've got a potential grenade in the house.

The 37mm/1pdr was made and used by every nation US English French German Russian and all the minors before during and after WW1 so there are hundreds of variations.
But OP, use this picture - if your projectile has any of the features like these either on the tip or similar on the base, call your local EOD.

>hundreds of variations
Yeah, upon further research I found everything from APCR to grapeshot.
The SA 18 is a little weak in the AT department but it's a pretty interesting multitasker.

Just chill. Perfect receptacle for your father's ashes when he passes. Keep it on the mantlepiece as a remembrance.

OP, some sample base fuzes, check the flat end as well.
>>31043287
His dad wouldnt fit - 37mm is about 1.5inches
>>31042963
>>31043130
if it is like the one in the picture then it looks like it's this one.

>Half the block
Naw senpai, just his house. No chance it holds enough charge for that.
>>31043399
Come on man, you don't need every little ash. Its fine.
OP here.
Thanks for the help identifying it. My last question is that the army would have to have defused the shell before letting my great grandad bring it home after serving, wouldn't it?
EODguy
Fraid not. Armies usually hand out ammo as souvenirs, all you get are medals paperwork and bad knees.
He would have pocketed it.
Thats why EOD runs on an amnesty system for civilian finds, we're not the MPs.
*don't hand out...
On a phone
Go ask /pol/ what you should do with a bomb.
You'll get plenty of good ideas.
>>31042963
The top has rust so it's kind of hard identifying from these but going from left it's similar to the first five
>>31043399
Bottom resembles 1 and 2
>>31046403
I'm not sure about WWI, but I know in WWII GIs were allowed to take ordnance as trophies, but the officers were required to make sure it was deactivated.
That's also why you see clipped firing pins and the like, because some officers took that order a little too literal.
>>31041739
I have one of those too.
My hollow projectile pulls right out, and the breech plug for the impact fuse also unscrews.
The top of the impact fuse is impacted and set off, so there's no way it could be set off if you filled the projectile with powder again.
>>31048582
And I should say, on the bottom of the projectile, it appears to be another fuse that lights when the gunpowder ignites. It looks like a slow-burn fuse more similar to fireworks, so I'm guessing it goes off after a set amount of time too.
