So I told Baofeng to make a triband UV-5.. he actually did it the absolute madman hahahahaha!

For real though, this thing has some pretty nice specs:
Frequency range:
[TX] 130 - 179.99MHz, 222-225.99MHz, 400 - 520.99MHz
[RX] 130 - 179.99MHz, 222-225.99MHz, 400 - 520.99MHz, 68-108MHz (FM Broadcast)
Channel Capacity:
128 Channels
Channel Spacing
25KHz (wide band)12.5KHz (narrow band)
Sensitivity
≤0.25μV (wide band) ≤0.35μV (narrow band)
Operation Voltage
7.4V DC ±20%
Battery:
1500mAh
Frequency step(kHz):
2.5K/5.0K/6.25K/10.0K/12.5K/20.0K/25.0K/50.0K
Antenna:
Antenna Connector: SMA-Female / Antenna Impedance: 50Ω
Accessory Connector:
Kenwood 2 Pin Standard
Stability:
±2.5ppm
Output power:
5W / 1W
Audio Power Output
1000mW/10%

Looks like the didn't combine the power output of the BF-F8HP with this triband frequency range though. Maybe the 8w models weren't as popular?

For the uninitiated, LegalMumboJumbo was a shitposting tripfag that was obsessed with radios. He would occasionally have a mildly decent comm thread with good information, but 99% of the time it was constant shitpost after shitpost. He also considers himself to have experienced SHTF after a tree fell in his neighborhood and cut power for a couple days.

Wow, yeah I'm not LMJ or any facsimile thereof. I'm usually in GQ or ARG, I just got the email about the radio and figured someone might like to know.

A tree falling and a power outage is hardly a SHTF, at least in my mind.

>8 watt

vs

>5 watt

to a casual user, a 3 watt increase in a handheld isnt going to make any practical difference in range.

in radio, power and range DO NOT always go hand in hand.
>>
>>31036275

Its been fucking years man it's probably not him.
>>
>>31036292
I have the cap of that thread somewhere, it was hilarious.
>>
>>31036194
Interesting. I'm gonna wait until Miklor or someone else reviews it. I like the step up to 5 watts and added filtering. However, 220 is dependent on where you live usually but more and more Baofengs seem to support it.

Honestly, I would just get the BF-F8HP until there is a new UV-5R that really impresses me.

I will say the tests me and a buddy did between his base station, which I don't know the model of, and my UV-82HP it does make a difference in signal quality. We never tested for range but we would have me cycle through the different transmission powers and the 8w came in loud and clear but it started losing clarity on the 5w and he could even pick me up on 1w.

>>31036344
Yeah, I'm not him. How did he shit up the threads? Was it the whole "Herr derr you gotta get a license, teh gubmint kick in your door for buyin a UV-5R!"?

>>31036353
Please find it for me, sounds like a good read. Honestly I haven't been on /k/ much lately. I've been tied up with work and a refit of nearly all my weapons and gear, radios, vehicles, and all my innawoods stuff. On top of a rolling remodel on the casa.
>>
>>31036275
It was him puppet tripping and samefagging thread after thread, no joke, one would hit the bump limit, 404 and he'd start another one.
All day.
Every.
Fucking.
Day.

The threads went like this;
>LMJ starts thread
>random brand new trips would show up and he'd flex his radio knowledge until that fucker 404d after bump limit
or;
>brand new trip would start a thread saying they were referred to LMJ because of his radio knowledge from another board
>then LMJ would show up and the thread would 404 after bump limit

Fucking radio threads are cancer and belong in /g/, but they don't want it either because LMJ has a reputation for being a faggot sperglord over there too.

He was on some video chat that somebody had going on here and I heard the recordings, he sounds like a stereotypical whiny voice faggot sperglord.
>>
>>31036307
That's what the date of the ban says.
>>
>>31036364
220 is probably included for aviation enthusiasts

again, the average user isnt going to notice a difference in any of the 3 bands offered by using a hanheld with a short antenna using fm.

where you start noticing a difference in performance is in the nicer radios with a cleaner more consistent power supplies and front ends, and when you start playing with styles and lengths of antennas and polarization
>>
>>31036413
Aw fuck, that sounds annoying as shit. Nonstop Radio threads? Yeah fuck all that. Here I posted what I wanted to, ya'll can let this die for all I care. Looks like there's a wheeled tank thread on the catalog that might have potential.

>[TX] 130 - 179.99MHz, 222-225.99MHz, 400 - 520.99MHz
You should keep in mind that use of these frequencies will compromise your positions immediately. Pic very much related.
>>
>>31036292
Can someone explain this to me?
>>
>>31041249
How to broadcast without compromising position?
>>
>>31044624
Laser communication, that or GHz/UHF (water vapor and atmosphere absorbs it before it can reach outer space)
>>
>>31038292
>>31038605
Nah, the 8 watt version is a joke. The difference in power doesn't really translate to that much more range and you're RF emissions are definitely going to be shittier.

>>31044624
>>31044689
There are certain absorption lines within the RF spectrum that can work (like 40GHz and 60GHz), in fact they're frequently used by car radars since car's only need a limited range of view (that being said, car radars are still a massive pain in the ass for radio scientists regardless of the absorption). Anyways, yes it's possible, but usually the equipment for that type of communication is kind of expensive and not extremely practical.

Lasers are fucking awesome for this type of thing, however again, the equipment is kind of expensive. With a decent knowledge of electronics though it shouldn't be too hard to rig up a rudimentary laser-comm system.
>>
>>31044624
Use the lowest possible emitted effect.

Also avoid broadcast, aim instead for directed transmission with directive antennas.
>>

>>
>>31046710
Seriously. I bought a UV5R and have absolutely no idea what any of the stuff about it means. I just want to be ably to talk to Walkie talkies or marine radios and know what channels or frequencys or whatever won't get me arrested.
>>
>>31046710
>>31046796
Bump on wanting something I can use to talk to walkie talkies
>>
>>31047140
Invest a few weeks to get a radio amateur license. "Knowledge is power" is more true now than ever since the expression was coined 2500 years ago.

Then get yourself one of the KX series Elecraft radios. Expensive but does the job. Or a military surplus HF radio.
>>
>>31041249
In the event that we "need" to use these technologies I don't see this being an issue. And if it is.....set up a mock broadcast station and monitor from afar for a few days. You obviously don't know much about sigint.
>>
>>31046796
>>31047140

Ok, so there are two bands IIRC (you'll need to check up on this) that are reserved for low-power communication between walkie talkies where you don't need a license. These are 433-434Mhz and 446-446.2 MHz. Note though that these frequency bands are designed for low power transmission, something in the order of 0.1W. The Baofengs transmit at 1W and 5W (and sometimes 8W depending on the model) which means that technically you aren't allowed to push the transmit button on them unless you own a license. In practice it's very, very difficult to determine if someone is transmitting above their maximum allowed transmit power so as long as you stick to the bands above you should be alright.
>>
>>31047314
>set up a mock broadcast station and monitor from afar for a few days.
And this achieves exactly what?

>You obviously don't know much about sigint.
But you do? Convince me.
>>
>>31047288

>Or a military surplus HF radio.

I'm pretty sure that's quite illegal, even if you could legally purchase a military radio they'd be hardwired to operate on the military radio bands, meaning you'll be in deep shit if you start transmitting.

>>
>>31047336
Joking, right?

In actual fact the HF band is full of bands allocated to licensed. radio amateurs.

>they'd be hardwired to operate on the military radio bands
Garbage. military use whatever bands they want but normally have coexist with other services. Military HF radios can typically use much or the entire HF band. That does not mean you should use all frequencies as an amateur.

There are many rules here, more than I mentioned, and getting a license means you have to know these.
>>
>>31047499

>>
>>31047672
Took the words right out of my fingers.
>>
>>31046785
E is for Extra, A is for Amateur Extra, and G is for General. These are all levels of licenses, however Amateur Extra doesn't exist anymore. The breaks and divisions between frequencies are all based on the FCC's rules regarding license privileges.
>>
>>31047512
>you will notice people showing up to the location it is broadcasting from.
If you truly believe G-men will appear for any illegal broadcast that appears I suggests you are the one who is retarded.

Of course if you jam gov channels they will appear but the intention here was NOT to draw too much attention to yourself. So the premise is to use a civilian channel. Just look at any radio amateur forum and you will see how much the FCC deals with lid operators.
