Stupid question, but what gun grease do you guys use?
I've been using this crappy stuff I bought arbitrarily at my LGS and now it's gone bad so looking to get some new more quality stuff
>>
Are you actually retarded? Don't use grease on your guns and how did you manage to make grease go bad? Just use gun oil.
>>
>>31028426
i use lubriplate grease on my triggers and inner bolts and royal purple gun oil on everything else.
>>
>>31028426
I only use grease on aluminum frame handguns and then any white lithium grease is fine. I actually use the same spray can stuff as I use on my motorcycle drive chain.
>>
CLP is all you need
>>

>>
>>31028426
I know dick about gun grease, always used hoppes lube. But it tends to run and ends up at the bottom of my gun/safe. Is grease a better option? If so what are some good recommendations? I'm told frog lube is good but I don't feel like heating up my gun everytime I service it.
>>
>>31028773
You don't need it.
I just use a tiny bit on contact points for the rails on my pistols

I recently purchased a helmet for WWII reenacting and sent it off for some refurbishment
apparently, I had a Vietnam liner (all I was looking for was the front seem, didn't consider the liner)
now I need to find a WWII (or at least wartime style postwar) liner

how much should I pay?
where besides eBay is good to look for a deal?

it literally doesn't matter
use cooking oil, motor oil, whatever

Liked the EWL and later the EWL30, so I tried this out before I left for Korea. Pulled my guns out of my Dad's safe a year later with no rust or degradation of the grease. Took them to the range and they all worked flawlessly.

>I don't even remember what I paid for it, but I had a coupon code.
>>
>>31028773

A thicker oil-based lube shouldn't run much, if at all. Hoppes is pretty thin stuff. M-Pro 7 is pretty common at various retailers (not the solvent, the CLP) and works fine. Don't overlube the gun. Not because you're going to hurt anything (you won't), but because it's unnecessary and, as you've found out, it runs all over the place.

Back when I was shooting a SIG I used TW-25B for grease, but there was a dude on AR15.com selling sample packets of it for dirt cheap. No way I'd pay whatever it is they ask for a tub of it.
>>
>>31028773
It works a little better on the rails than oil since it has less of a tendency to work it's way down to one end of the rail while the slide is moving. That's a bit of hair splitting though. I've heard of everything from Mobil 1 to hoppes being used for years with success. Just keep your gun lightly lubed around points of metal on metal contact and you'll be fine.
>>
For people saying never use gun grease. Some guns like the m1 Garand actually require it.

Don't listen to him. Most guns are better with oil, but many people prefer grease on precision bolt guns and for long term storage.
Generic lithium grease designed for high pressures work fine and last forever. I use Motomaster because it is cheap as hell.

FINE FAGGOT, I CLEAN MY GUNS!

Alright, I use the REM oil cleaner lubricant protectant all in one aersol cans. I spray liberally, whilst avoiding any optics on the gun and minimizing over spray on the plastic shits. I spray all metal down completely. I use an old T-shirt for all the carbon deposits that aren't too tough to remove. Then after spraying through the barrel I pull a correct sized boresnake through from chamber to crown/brake several times. I use a white piece of paper to reflect light into the barrel and examine. To ensure there isn't enough lead/copper built up to cause problems. I use a metal softer than the gun brush to remove any carbon build up that is too tough for T-shirt/pressurized REM spray to remove. Then I spray it all down with more REM spray and put away. I'll even spray some REM oil into my ammo boxes because I don't shoot enough to cycle rounds frequently and I have a swamp cooler.

ARE YOU FUCKING HAPPY!?

>>
>>31030865
I live in SC. The event costs exactly $12 dollars. You need a rifle, pistol with holster, ears, eyes, and a chamber flag. They'll sell you the flag for a dollar, or even give you one if you're new.
You need at least 2 mags for both pistol and rifle, as they usually build in one necessary mag change. The first rifle mag is almost always limited to 10 rounds, so if the stage calls for 12-15 rounds you gotta change mags once.
>revolver
I really don't know. In general it seems that as long as you are cool with handicapping yourself with an unusual gun and are just as safe with it, it's cool. A revolver would be a pretty severe handicap due to the stages being set up for ~10-20 rounds. But if you're okay with that, they'd be more than happy to let you do it. I've seen lever actions used before, and I actually ran one time with a hungarian m38 mosin. It was lots of fun, and I was fine with not actually competing timewise with everyone.
They are damn serious about safety, and I wouldn't go if they weren't. While you're running the stage you're followed by a safety officer who is watching for you to do any kind of dumb shit, at which point you are stopped, corrected, and/or dq'd or kicked out depending on what you did.
TL;DR it's fun, you can probably run any gun that's safe, and if they don't take safety seriously wherever you go, turn right around and leave.

I dig it my man.
FWIW at my local range they ask us to reload barrel towards the ground. Not straight down but lower than level. They don't want the first round flying high. Looks like you're shootin in a less populated area, but just food for thought.

What are decent budget options for full sized, DA/SA, metal frame, manual thumb safety pistols?
>>
>>31030956
Thank you for the information.

So with two gun, the average of pistol target shots are 12-15? Muh revolver holds 7 and a single reload shouldn't be too much so long as I compensate with quick firing and not missing. Or if I man up and moonclip I could probably only lose 1/3 a second over a magazine pistol if they're forced to do a single reload as well.

>>31031000
I see the potential for letting a round fly over the berm. But no one has called me out, and its a more effective combat reload. My number one problem is turning around with the muzzle up. its safe but RO's don't like it.

I cleaned my 10/22 for the first time today and noticed tiny amounts of rust on the outside of the stainless steel barrel. You can hardly see it unless you look at it from the right angle, but it's in a few places. Is this something I should worry about? What do I do to get rid of it or stop it from getting worse?
>>
>>31031077
Hmm. Our stages are designed where you really shouldn't have to turn more than 180 degrees, if you have to back up you do it facing forward. I hear you on the muzzle up thing but our RO's would call someone on that too. I've been in the crowd when a dude muzzle swept the whole crew trying to change position. We didn't take kindly to it. Even if your muzzle is up it would make folks nervous to see your face while you're still running the course.
>>
>>31031091
You "might" be able to find one of the old Smith & Wessons if you're lucky, but I don't know too many besides that for that cheap, at least in those parameters. Maybe you could find a used Beretta 92/M9 within that price range too, but it's tough to find a metal-frame option with those features within that price point from what I can tell.

Any driving reason towards the DA/SA or the thumb safety? You really don't need one if you have the other

0000 steel wool to get rid of it, then to prevent more all you can really do is oil it unless you go full Russian and cosmoline it, but I doubt you're going for deep storage.

From how you're describing it, at this stage it's probably only miniscule surface rust, in which case you have nothing to worry about. You just want to prevent pitting, and even then, the inside of the barrel is what you're really worried about; outside is more cosmetic unless you let it get horrific.

It wqs NOTHING. It was autistic fucking idiots obsessing over an ATF opinion letter (which is not a law) that if you can read at a 4th grade level confirmed that you can shoulder a brace or a pistol, or shoot it any way you want; only that you cannot manufacture a firearm with a barrel length under '16 with the INTENTION to shoulder it.

It's about the original machines and presses used to make them. That's why Russian AKs are good. Egyptian AKs are also surprisingly very good because they were gifted some machines from the USSR. Chinese AKs are good because they were allowed detailed tours and specs to recreate their own machinery.

Everybody else is just kind of operating from scratch, and having to personally find it rather than have it be state funded by a world superpower. This is why wholly American made AKs tend to be trash.

You can use cooking oil, olive oil, vegetable oil, motor oil, gear oil, and various other oils to lubricate guns

But, many firearm lubricants have other additives that can help preserve and lubricate better than the ones not designed with additives for firearms.

Why was the Fulda Gap so damn important?
>>
>>31044766
It was basically this geographical funnel through which the Warsaw Pact was poised to free Europe from the fetters of capitalism. The lead Soviet army corps had two officers at every level so it could split into *two* corps as soon as it cleared the Gap, reinforce themselves with units coming up from the rear, and go off in different directions.

Look at a topographical map of Germany. That'll help.

Not sure if it's worth starting a thread so I came here.
I am an aussie in cucktoria looking to get into handgun shooting. It seems from what I have read that I have to start off on .22 using range guns and then after some time shoot to qualify so I can buy ONLY a .22 pistol.
After that I can move up to .38 and then after that qualify on a 9mm or .45 and then I am only then allowed to purchase any pistol I want.
It looks like I will be stuck on 22 for a while so TLDR: Is it worth even buying a .22 if my goal is to get a centrefire semi auto or should I just qualify for 9mm on a range gun and get unrestricted pistol choice?

not familiar with aussie gun laws, but having a 22 handgun is really nice, ammo is cheap and you can shoot it all day long, so its good practice, not to mention plinking with it is really fun

I have one. It's fucking awesome. Best trigger I've ever experienced on a striker fired gun. Easy to conceal (the compact 15rd version). The 'carry' version has the compact length but the full size grip so it takes 17rd mags flush. It's easy as fuck to swap frames.

The gun comes with a decent owb holster. Otherwise just get whatever suits you best.

It's a pretty solid concept for a bush rifle for safari and quick/short game style hunting, like boar, and why a lot of those hunters have set ups in that vein.

Ok so I live in a ban state. The Attorney General banned all AR and AK type platforms. Any firearm which physically resembles or works internally the same as the ban guns are no longer allowed. I can't buy 80% lowers, I can't go out of state to make the purchase but I can do a private transaction. However, people are asking $1300 and up for M&P15s and Ruger 556s, and I refuse to do that.

Here are a few of the dozen or so autoloaders we are allowed to have now:
>Mini-14s
>Mini-30s
>M1As

Now, the only workaround I can think of is to purchase a pump action AR style rifle (like a Remington 7615.) Does anyone know much about pump action 5.56 rifles? Are they garbage? Should I just go with the Mini-14 over the pump action rifle? If anyone can help, it'd be appreciated.

>mass.gov/ago/public-safety/appendix-a-guns-list.pdf
Here's the list of rifles we're allowed to have, just incase anyone cares to look
Also, can anyone tell me how true this is of Mini-30s? This came from Brownells website:
>At the time the Mini-30 was introduced very few bullet makers where producing .311/.312 inch bullets for reloading in the light 125-130 grain weight required. Ruger initiated the use of barrels with a groove dimension of .308 inch and a long tapered throat. The throat allowed the use of ammunition with .311/.312 projectiles by gradually squeezing them to the .308 diameter. In addition, ammunition loaded with more commonly available .308 diameter bullets could also be used.

>Commencing in 1992 Ruger initiated a change to using .311/.312 nominal groove diameter, 1-10 inch right hand twist barrels in all Mini-30's. It was likely well into 1993 before all rifles coming of the production line incorporated the .311/.312 barrels.

As long as you're keeping it for life and you're going to modify it for your uses, and not to be an asshole, you can do whatever you like.

However, the "scout rifle" is unbelievably retarded in any modern usage, and taking a forward "scout" position with a five shot, 5 moa, bolt action rifle with a slower straight bolt is an even worse idea
>>

Get the fuck out of Massachusetts for one thing. NH isn't that far away, and Rhode Island can't possibly be worse than that horse shit the AG is pulling.

Next, if the Ares SCR isn't banned, get that. I have a feeling it is because "LOL INTERCHANGABLE PARTS".

Finally, if you can get a 'pump action' AR, and the lower is still in spec, why not just throw out the upper and get a normal one?

just started attending pistol classes I'm a decent shot, i tried a few calibers where would you place 9mm on recoil. for reference i shot 22rimfire 38special and 45. while i can shoot a 45 i don't feel comfortable with it & aim goes to crap after 4 rounds.

Question:

Some of my steel pistol magazines have patchy areas of rust speckling. I wipe them down with CLP once in a while. Is there more I should do, or is that good enough to keep them from rusting more? The magazines work great.

>>31053321
I think 9mm has controllable recoil if you've got both hands on the gun. My 38spl snubnose has a lot more bite than my 9mm from a glock 19.

So you have rifles sending sub-100 grain bullets down range at 2-3 times the speed of sound, but then we have handguns shooting often over 100 grain bullets down range at or below the speed of sound.

Why not lighten the bullets and increase the speed for handguns?
>>
Am I overreacting or is my dad being an idiot?

A break in in my area spurred a bit of a discussion on guns and I ended up asking him "where is your gun, anyway?" He responds with something like "somewhere in my nightstand", and I ask him if at least he knows if the magazine is in the gun or not or if a bullet is chambered. He doesn't know any of these for certain.

Isn't it simple gun safety and responsibility to know exactly where your gun is and if the magazine is in it, has a round chambered, what direction it's facing if it is?
I'm not even into guns that much and this ignorance freaks me out.

If there are no kids in the house it's not a huge deal.

The main issue is what if he needed to use it and there is no ammo in it and he's not sure where it's at or can't get to it right away. Gun with no ammo when you need it is useless when a home invader is busting down your bedroom door.
