They're for carrying the gun. That most militarys sperg out over their use is entirely an end user issue. That said, they've been on their way out for 20 years now, only shit countries like turkey and china have new rifles with carry handles.

I greatly prefer the handle carry on my AR. Perhaps for nostalgia and aesthetics, but that's just the way I grew up seeing them. Flip up sights seems faggy to me. Fixing what isn't broken.

They allow you to carry the gun.
In certain gun's cases they also house the rear sight (ARs) or even the charging handle (AR-10).

They're dying out quickly not because of lower profile rear sights, but because nobody uses them to carry their guns anymore since everybody carries their weapon slung at all times now.
In the old days slings were used to carry the rifle outside of combat on your shoulder or as a shooting aid. During combat people would unsling the rifle and having a carry handle was convenient for one handed carry during movement in battle to free up one hand.

Western armies used to have a hard on for carry handles in the early cold war.

The thinking was, that if you were carrying something else, like a litter, ammo, GMG/HMG, you carried your rifel by the handle. So when you needed to shoot. You could get to it faster, than if you had the rifle slung.

I feel like my hands are pretty average sized, maybe a little bigger than average for a man, and it's still hard to carry it with the handle.

But it's aesthetic and i love the iron sights, so I'm not complaining.
