I thought the command is "Fix Bayonets" not "Affix Bayonets"?

Affix and Fix are two sides of the same coin. Affix saw a dramatic decline in usage around 1880-1910 and after WWI the affair had basically become""fix". It came back in the 60s and 70s in the UK as an effort to return to the kind of national élan levels, but élan neither wins wars nor makes your bayonet charge any more successful.

In the movie Gettysburg Col. Chamberlain simply yells "Bayonets!" Which I believe coincides with other first hand accounts of the battle.
"Affix bayonets" is some Limey shit. Muricans Fix Bayonets.

Kind of bummed to read this article on how Chamberlain might taken the credit from some deserving people but I'm not much of a civil war historian to comment further.

I live in Gettysburg and have been reading up on stuff about the battle a lot recently. When you see the unit and flank markers in person, it helps a lot with understanding the ebb and flow of the battle. The 20th Maine held fast until the 83rd Pennsylvania reinforced their right flank with the 16th Michigan at their right. This essentially drew the attention of the Texans and Alabamians coming over Devil's Den and through the woods near the base of Big Round Top to the West and South respectively. Shits fun to research. Lots of contradicting reports, as most info is from private journals and individual unit reports.
