7.62x51mm is beyond what's practical for infantry combat.

7.62x39mm is archaic and heavy, 9x39mm and .300BLK does everything it needs to do but better, 5.56x45mm and 5.45x39mm is much better for ranged combat, being able to kill just well enough as any 7.62mm rifle cartridge, .300BLK being better for carbines and suppressing than 5.56x45mm, and 9x39mm doing what 7.62x39mm does for carbines in place of 5.45x39mm, with the bonus of actually suppressing properly.

7.62x39mm is workable for many purposes but is hardly the best intermediate cartridge, 7.62x51mm has lots of military purposes still but it's long since been proven it's ill fitting for infantry rifles.
