Talk me out of buying a Vepr in either .308 or 7.62x54r
If not talk me out of it, guide me towards the better purchase

They're solid rifles. Probably the most durable and high quality AK pattern rifles you can buy.

If you've ever wanted a Dragunov/PSL style rifle but didn't want to pay major dosh for one, this is probably your best bet. They can handle heavy ball ammo and if you're good you can do about 1.5-2.0moa with good rounds.

That said they come with some drawbacks.

-Scope mounts are expensive and not always available.
-Mags are a pain to find sometimes, particularly if you do the 54r models.
-Milsurp 54r is no longer super cheap as it once was, and good 308 is expensive, but more readily available. I'd go with the 308 personally.

Ultimately, this is if you really want a longer range ak that will last you forever and be prepared to spend a bunch on mags and optics if you decide to go that route.

I'm a happy owner of a .308Win Vepr myself, and I can say that it's a very lovely, solid and accurate little gun.

Hell, it's an AK, with heavy frame and barrel, firing the 7.62 NATO, using dual-stag magazines. What's there NOT to love?

you can also make it into a Rhodesian wet dream with aftermarket parts.
>>
>>31011980
You will be very happy with whichever one you get. They are really great rifles.
>>
>>31011980
Was thinking about getting one but they used to be around in a 28" barrel last year. They've all dried up apparently.

I own a 20 inch x54r with a 9x42 posp 400m rangefinder scope.

Its a very solid rifle. Very well build and fully reliable. Effective range is about 300 yards due to less than ideal ak accuracy, but still useable for hunting and targets. It likes heavier projectiles- 174 grain silver bear x54r works and is cheap. 20 inches for the x54r model is ideal because its more manageable and the extra velocity doesnt mean much within 300 yards.

Each calibers has drawbacks and advantages. With x54r, you have shared ammo with your mosins, real slav caliber authenticity, and pso and posp scopes will slide right on the side rail and are built for the caliber.

308 mags are easier to find but the scopes dont look as sexy with the rifle and you'll need an awkward side mount adapter with rails combined with low rise rings for your 308 scope. The scope mount is already ridiculously high and I get a chin weld with my posp. The extra height of the rings may leave your face unable to contact the stock at all unless you buy a riser and install it.

you could just get / make a side mount that only has rings at the top, saving few millimeters of height, like mine does.

Not op, but could someone measure the thickness of their vepr barrel?

As for myself, I'm interested in the new .30-06 coming out.

I'll have to call aftermarket guys and see if they're going to make 20 round magazines, otherwise, I'm not interested.
>>
I've got the 16in 308 model from the brief time they were doing squarebacks. I like mine and it shoots 1.5-2 inch groups at 100 yards with a fixed power 5x on it. I like mine but know that it'll never be as accurate as a well built ar10 or scar...but mine was 599 OTD so I'm not complaining much.

as far as sight options, I have the MI sidemount and just ordered the RS AKOG style mount. The 5x burris is touch high on the MI and I want to see how much better it is on the integrated rail.

i have a 23" vepr in 308. its pretty boring. it doesnt do anything particularly well, its heavy, and not really accurate.
all in all, i regret buying it. if youre dead set on a 308 vepr, csspec mags are awesome. also, look into this

I want to get one in 7.62x39

I'm not sure what barrel length to get. I'm leaning towards the 16".

I like the one atlantic firearms has on there website but they've been out of stock for a while.
>>
>>31016562
if you want the 16in 7.62x39 you're in luck as kvar and legion usa have them in stock.

Remember, x39 veprs need a bullet guide installed to use standard ak mags. Much easier than changing out the location of the trigger group ala saiga.
>>
>>31011980
Get the 54r one for spicy memes and the possibility of cheap spamcans if Trump-senpai restores relations with Russia.
Get .308 if you want doublestack mags.
>>
>>31012171
what scope and mount, friend. i like the way that looks.

>>
>>31011980
If you want a 'practically' accurate 308 dmr rifle on a real tuff action, hard to beat a vepr.

Reasons not to-
>other rifles are a lot more accurate
>other rifles have cheaper/easier to get mags
>54r is getting harder to find/more expensive
>if you're paying for 308 you might as well feed it in something that can take more advantage of it accuracy wise
>added steps of converting it if that's your jam

otherwise git it OP 8/10 gr8 gun m8
>>

Seriously. I wish I hadn't seen this.
>>
>>31016588
I looked at k var

it says you have to be 21
I'm 20

would they even know I'm not 21
>>
>>31016681
They won't give a fuck so long as the check clears. Just make sure your local laws and your FFL are OK with you being 20 if you order one.
>>
>>31016641
For the price of a 1MOA .308 DMR and optic you can get a Vepr, a Tikka T3 to share ammo, matching optics, a few Vepr mags, and the ammo. Given how few people actually need 1MOA out of a semi auto this seems like a better deal.
>>
>Talk me out of this /k/

Good job, I'm going to buy myself a Vepr soon in 54R.
>>
>>31016588
I heard they made 30rd magazines specifically for Vepr's
>>
FUCK I CAN'T FIND 20 ROUND MAGAZINES FOR 54R
>>
>>31019121
Yeeeeup, welcome to the 54r vepr ownership club. You'll have to comfort yourself for less than reliable 10 rounders and overpriced unobtanium factory 5 rounders for now.
>>
>>31018035
They do...but why limit yourself to a snowflake?
