A shotgun would work well. You can, in fact, go to Walmart and pick up a decent shotgun so long as it's a good brand. A Walmart's mossberg 500 is going to be the exact same thing as a gun store's mossberg 500. Pick up one of those new for $250 to $350 or so and load it up with some buckshot.

Depending on the size of the property, it doesn't sound like these trespassers are giving you legal grounds to shoot. If a bunch of homeless guys are throwing burning objects in your front yard three feet from your doorstep, then maybe. If you need a gun with "range" to reach out and touch them, not so much. If they're out at the 100-yard ranges, a Mossberg 500 with some #8 birdshot will give them enough of a muzzle flash and report to think you're shooting at them without risking injury and going to jail. If they're getting closer than that, it will still be a viable scare-off and skin-breaking round. Up close, there are better things for SD, but a load of birdshot even at 25 yards is like getting attacked by hundreds of angry hornets at once. At 10 yards, you've got hamburger flesh and maybe sucking chest wounds.

I would recommend a Mossberg 500, plain model with an 18.5" barrel. Load the tube with four rounds of buckshot. Buy one of those buttstock ammo holders and stick some slugs on that. If for whatever reason you feel the need to shoot at something beyond 25 yards, simply insert a slug from your butt cuff into the tube and run the slide.

As for buckshot, Federal Flitecontrol is god-tier for buckshot (available in 00 and #1) and Hornady's Versatite wad basically does the same thing (Federal offers their stuff in a low recoil variant, though Hornady does not IIRC). If neither are available locally, Remington 8-pellet low recoil 00 buck typically patterns very well, though not as tight as the Hornady and Federal loadings with the specialized wads. If you can't find that, look for anything 8 pellet 00 buck first, followed by 9-pellet 00 from any of the major manufacturers. Winchester makes a 16-pellet #1 buckshot load that's usually available around deer season that also works quite well.

As for slugs, basically anything will work against people. Brennekes are superior for penetrating barriers, however. Federal Truball is available in a low-recoil variant.

The whole birdshot thing came out of people's concern of overpenetration in a dense urban living situation and even then, you should just get a lower recoil/lower fps buckshot round.
