Mechanically it can't be close to the real thing. German 9mm was a super hot load. So to fire properly from a closed bolt(I assume) without crazy 9mm loads it would have to change.

That's exactly what it is. They have to convert it to a close-bolt design for use with modern ammunition, it's a fundamentally different gun that looks like an MP40.

I can understand wanting it and not wanting it. At $650 though as long as it works most of the time it'll sell, and there's plenty of people that'd be just as happy with one that is, externally, an MP40.

Were I more in love with them I'd probably get one. I'd love a modern reproduction C96-- I don't care what they do internally to it, as long as it functions the same and looks the same externally (and is chambered in 9mm)

I am definitely in love with the MP40 and is probably why I'm on the fence leaning toward a yes on it.

Cause the ammo costs twice as much as 9x19, I'd like to be able to buy it and shoot it, too.

Besides, 9mm is similar to 7.63 in regard to ballistics. It's cheap and it's common, so I'll take a 9mm C96 over any other caliber. You can find .357 SIG on the shelves, but not great variety and not everywhere. 7.63 Mauser? Maybe at some LGS... I've honestly never looked, but something tells me it's not so easy to find in stores.

Also it's an sbr, and that's gonna be another 200 bucks (with approximately 9 months waiting for approval. If you're lucky.)

Not a bad idea as they'll be way more than that by the time a decade or two goes by. I switched to the Luger because they have less wear than a C96 at the same price. Got a very fine one for just under $2,000. All matching , bore and metal in VERY sharp condition.. I mean you run your finger hard enough over the chamber and it can cut you. A C96 in that price range would have had pitting or just not in pristine condition.

No. Because at $650 (though store price will probably be 550-600 for those that decide to carry it), you have better options available.

I just bought a PPS43 carbine in 9mm for $450 with 10 magazines. That was a good deal but those can be found for under $600-700. You can get a CX4 in .40/45 in that price range. Marlin Camp 9. Citadel M1 copies that take beretta magazines are in the 400-500 range and will take many USGI M1 Carbine parts.

If you want an HD PCC, the Citadel/Chiappa Carbine is your best bet.

It's not a meme in that sense. Converting a foreign manufactured pistol to rifle might create some 922r issues depending on how you view the subject. There's a reason why it's being manufactured and imported as a pistol.

But the other argument is that by converting from a pistol to a rifle, you are manufacturing a new domestic weapon, thus 922r doesn't comply. Either way, nobody gives a shit, but there's still something there for sticklers of the law.
