Agreed. Just leave it alone. Cops generally feel they are expert enough with firearms to do their job and view firearm aficionados with suspicion at best. They aren't fans. Many don't even have a gun other than what they were issued and don't care to, they just like the freedom that their badge means they can generally carry when and if they want, period, free of any further regulation (a right nearly every American should have.)

I think the following question would work well:
"If you were ORDERED to confiscate firearms from the public, like in an emergency situation or something, would you do it?"
This is important, because the last half of the situation gives him an easy out that may reveal the truth. "An emergency or something" is EXACTLY the time when Americans should NOT be disarmed, and likely it's the attempt to disarm that's actually causing the emergency.
The first part of the question doesn't give him wiggle room for "asked" - it's if he's ORDERED. "I was only following orders" is what the Nazis used to violate rules of war and humanity that are no more sacred than those in the Constitution.
And the middle part of the question makes it clear that we aren't talking about being ordered to confiscate a gun from an individual who might have done wrong - this is the PUBLIC. All of us.
Truth is, there is only ONE right answer to the question, and that is "Absolutely not." Any waffling about the circumstances is cover for "I'll do what I'm told because my bosses will have a good explanation for why I'm being told to do it."
