Good choice, especially now that they come with the paddle mag release.
>Anyone have luck suppressing one?
I've read up on it a bit; it requires changing the locking piece to adjust the roller-delay.
>Anyone love or hate their PTR and want to tell me about it?
I love my 91GI-R. It's pretty accurate even with cheaper ammo (2-4 MOA depending on manufacturer), and reliable. Mags are still pretty cheap and widely available, although you'll get some worn-out melons which don't feed very well. It does a number on fired cases though; especially in the summer when it's very warm. They get dents in the wall from the ejection port lip, then the case neck gets dented if they hit something hard on the ground. Recoil is more of a shove than a kick because of the roller-delay; internet complains about it but it's softer than any of my milsurp bolt-action rifles.

Do it OP. If you want a battle rifle get the GI. If you want a sick DMR get the F version. Mine is 1-1.5 with anything I feed it. 1.5 with perfecta all day, erryday. Need a bigger scope for mine to find out its real potential.

I absolutely love my ptr91fr. I recently purchased a used 3x9x40 bushnell. (impulse buy at LGS). Will post pics eventually.

Thanks guys, is there anything that can be done to make it easier on the ejected brass, a mod to the ejection port lip perhaps? How about just using steel case ammo, will it eat that fine?

I am looking forward to it and PTR seems like a good solid company.
>>
The general consensus I'm getting is that it's worth the $900 from Atlantic (unless I can find one cheaper) for the GI-R, is that correct?
>>
>>30999771
>is there anything that can be done to make it easier on the ejected brass, a mod to the ejection port lip perhaps?
If you get one without the welded rail you can get a clip-on buffer with a rubber pad to cushion the lip; but the welded rail interferes. I know one Anon with a railed GI had the German G3A3A1-style welded-on case deflector (see pic, the flange sticking out behind the port) installed, then glued a piece of velcro to the inside of it. This provided the same effect, but required permanent modification of the rifle.
>How about just using steel case ammo, will it eat that fine?
It was born to eat steel case; that's all the Germans were making in 1945 when this mechanism was first designed. I just don't care for the bi-metal projectiles most steel-case ammo is loaded with.

OP here, this is the one I am currently looking at, I will ask the dude tomorrow what model it is. He noted that it was manufactured before the company moved to their new location. The lower rail looks shorter than the FR's i have seen pictured. Is this thing an FR? And is it still worth getting since it does not look like it has the paddle mag release? is that something I can add without too much fuss?

>>30999941
>Is this thing an FR?
No, that's an older "F" model; no welded top rail (which is the "R" in "FR") or paddle magazine release. There's a clamp-on top rail in the picture, though.

How much does he want for it?
>>
>>30999941
That is an FR without the paddle. You can add a tac latch, send it off to a gunsmith ($200), or just get use to the button. What's he asking? Remember that new ones come with the rail welded on and the paddle included. Make sure you are getting a good deal.

this seemed decent for the model with the aluminum hand guard and rails, 50 rounds shot in it since new supposedly.

Not bad. Atlantic Firearms sells the 91FR, with pre-installed paddle mag release and welded-on top rail for ~$1050. Installing the paddle release will cost you about $150-200 from one of the gunsmiths that specialize in doing it, like Jeff Walters or Bill Springfield.

A bit of grinding, some precision drill press work, and some welding. Scroll down to "Paddle Magazine Catch"

I wonder if Tulammo's new bimetal is any better on the barrel now.

A good option could be using Berdan - primed surplus brass cartridges such as hirtenberger , the projectile would not be bimetal and i can't use the brass unless I spend all day drilling out primer pockets so i will just leave that shit on the ground.
>>
>>31000244
>Is it kinda like dropping the mag on a 10/22
I wouldn't know.
>on the models that have the button instead of the paddle?
It's not like an AR mag release because the G3 mags don't drop free; they have to be helped out. If you have a long index finger you can do it without shifting your grip, but since you have to grab the mag anyway it's best when you can use one hand to perform both actions. I keep meaning to send mine off to have a paddle installed but I forget about it or blow it off or spend the money on ammo instead.

BTW, all CETME/G3s actually have the button release; the paddle is just supplementary. It's a hold-over from the design of the prototype Mauser Gerat-06H. The direction it operated in was reversed, left-to-right. So, if you were right-handed like 90% of all people (and 100% of all Germans) you just hit the button with your left thumb as you grabbed the magazine with your left hand.
>>
>>31000293
So what do you guys usually use in your PTRs? I am getting mine tomorrow and have no idea what to run through it for practice shooting.

As a tack on, what do you keep on hand for any potential real (defensive/hunting/whatever) shooting?

>So what do you guys usually use in your PTRs?
Hirtenberger surplus and ZQI/MKE M80 ball. Sometimes Silver Bear.
>what do you keep on hand for any potential real (defensive/hunting/whatever) shooting?
120 rounds of 1980-dated Hirtenberger Patronen-58.
>>
>>31000293
Tulammo sez:

"TulAmmo is converting from a Bimetal Jacketed projectile to a Zinc Coated projectile. Zinc coating is a chemical method of surface treatment (galvanizing) which gives the bullet jacket a more uniform and consistent protective layer than that of machine-stamped bimetal bullet jackets. Thanks to this, cartridges with zinc-coated bullets provide up to 10-15% better shooting accuracy than cartridges with bimetal bullets"

welp perhaps the new zinc coating might be a better lubricant for the barrel than the previous bimetal jacket . Zinc is added to performance oils to reduce wear on the internals of engines.

ty. so this older F model I am looking at would accept an ejection port buffer without any problems because there is no welded rail to interfere?

I found this thread regarding a bolt stuck 3/4 closed with case stuck inside, is this a common clearing procedure:

Hold the rifle in a vertical position with the muzzle facing skyward.

Hold the rifle approximately 20" over a firm surface.
The floor of the garage usually works well.

Extend the charging handle.

Place the "chopping" edge of your hand firmly on the charging handle.

With moderate force, slam the butt of the rifle on the firm surface.

You must also apply force on the charging handle as the butt strikes the firm surface.

If you are really worried about marring your buttstock, put several layers of duct tape on the buttplate before commencing this action.

If the spent case does not eject, repeat the process until the case is ejected or the rim is ripped off the case.

If you rip the rim off the case, report back here.

This maneuvre is know as the "WECSOG pogo," or just simply "the pogo."

New ti PTR's, where can i get one that is near identical to this. Don't really care about the case deflector.

I'm planning on getting a PTR like many others here.

Is getting one of the welded-rail PTRs a good idea, or is it better to get a classic and use an adapter? I myself prefer non-railed aesthetically but I also will probably end up using some kind of sight on it.

They're fine. A proper 3-pin steel lower would be best, but ATF sucks. There's one good thing about the factory poly lowers compared to a clipped/converted surplus steel lower, and that is the tang of the poly lower completely surrounds the stock pin, which helps to hold the lower (and therefore the trigger pack) in the proper position. On a real G3, the front pin of the lower does this, but of course the semi-clones can't have that pin. This means that with a converted metal lower you're effectively just pinching it between the back of the magazine well and the pins in the stock to hold it in place.

>>31004338
>where can i get one that is near identical to this.
You want a PTR-91 GI Classic like this one from Atlantic Firearms:
https://www.atlanticfirearms.com/component/virtuemart/shipping-rifles/ptr-gi-308-rifle-w-o-rail-detail.html?Itemid=0

That is the closest you can currently get to the G3A3A1 in that pic. Ironically they no longer make the GI with the polymer lower like in that pic, but you could buy a converted SEF poly lower from HK Parts or Robert RTG.

Buds Gun Shop has a picture of the older GI model with poly lower (like I have), but IDK if that's the rifle you would actually receive. If it is, it would not have the paddle magazine release installed, and you would have to have a gunsmith do that.
https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/36_878/products_id/719007847/PTR+91+GI+308WIN+18+GRN+STOCK+20RD

Does the paddle make that huge of a difference? From the other posts in this thread it seems like a huge deal, plus as a bit of a nerd, the button seems to be the authentic to the real G3 choice.

Thanks for the answer.

I bought my PTR91 about 10 years ago on impulse. (Thought process: "I'm single and have money, I should probably spend that money on cool things.")

I had to send it back to PTR to get the sight rings (don't know the actual term) aligned correctly. I can't remember the turn-around time, but it was very reasonable.

Since then, it is an absolutely fun rifle to shoot. It has a recoil that is extremely manageable; it doesn't feel like .308 out of other rifles I've shot. I get a gigantic perma-smile each time I shoot it.

Being an AR-fag, I can never remember proper field strip and re-assembly method, but the internet is my friend.

Just one guy's opinion.

That one has the lighter-weight milspec G3 barrel profile, rather than the heavy bull barrel of the "F".
