its a Type 38, but those are 5.56 blanks

I've found (and passed) on a few this year. I'm confident I can come across another. But the 49/56 and Russian 1895 come first.
>>
>>30997221
what is a type 38 worth/how much do they go for? i cant seem to find too many of them, they seem to be pretty uncommon
>>
>>30997219
no they are good shooters and 30-06 is a great round. dont have as much historical collectability. their $ value reflects this. but very solid guns and for less than half the price of a new rem 700 id say they make great hunting rifles
>>
>>30997301
$250- $600, depending on condition and other stuff.

It shoots pretty damn high with Monarch 185gr, but consistently so. I was ringing a 1' steel gong pretty consistently at 300yds, even though I had to aim about a foot below it. It's safe to shoot Russian ammo in it even though the barrel lacks the D marking, because the barrels are Tikka M91s that have been cut down and modified to M39 spec (or something to that effect).

Have yet to stick it in a lead sled and get groups.

What might you price a solid gun as you would say at? It is for a trade and I'm just wondering if I should as for anything on top of the rifle. I'm trading my benelli supernova tactical for it. I have two of the benellis and don't really need a second gun. But I've never owned a bolt action and would love to get to know them a little better. Guy made me a offer to trade but I don't want to sound like a ass to him as well as getting ripped off.

well that looks like a really tastefully done sporter, its not just a chopped stock. it looks like a nice hunting rifle with that sporter stock and polished finish. it looks like they added some nice target sights to it too. is it in original caliber or is that a different barrel?

i only collect true milsurp so i dont really care for those type of rifles, but if i was a hunter and wanted a nice accurate deer gun for cheap i would buy that over a brand new factory made rifle. the quality of manufacturing was much better back then, those rifles are built like tanks and the springfield is very smooth and well built. id say its worth maybe $300, probably not more than $400. you can still find original military 1903s for $600. i think your shotgun is worth more.

>>30997219
i think the value on this sporter is definitely in the target sights and stock, and maybe the barrel if they rebarreled it. im not an expert in that stuff, so i dont know. i just dont really like sporters of military guns but a lot of people really do.

il be honest, I actually dont know very much about the rifle. I got it from a good friend just for the cool factor. other than that fact that it says 'F" something followed by some numbers. what about it is post armistice?
>>
>>31000329
Hooded front sight is a dead giveaway, also the way the rear sight is adjusted (pre-armistice ones don't have that button on the side) and the sling mounts are different. Also the parkerized finish, pre-armistice ones have a black enamel.

It's almost nothing but cosmetic differences, but I like the pre-armistice ones better.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, get it. Almost certain Classic is gonna want more for a post armistice one.

whats there to suck up? yugos are great! and a bargain for the price.$200-250 is a great deal for an excellent quality mauser. they are built sturdy. dont quite feel as tight as a german but i think that was intentional to give more room for reliability sake

you could also get a turk mauser for sub $200. can find them often from $100-$150. you could go swedish for about $400. czechs are great too, make sure you get a nice condition one though, lots of ratty vz-24s on the market. same goes for turks

I've never shot one. I fired my 43M once and it was pretty nice. The bolts are super fast to cycle. Smoother than a LE bolt, and cock-on close, but the bolt knob placement obviously doesn't allow the super fast thumb and forefinger grip like the LE's bolt does. The sights are also pretty good because the front post is steeper than a Mauser's and the notch is big and deep. Not as good of a sight picture as with something like a Mosin with the U notch and square front post, but still very good.
>>
>>31007033
Yeah, it's hard to beat a Mannlicher in action smoothness.
>>
>>31001523
Is your scope off center?
>>
>>31007127
No, when you adjust most rifle-scopes the screws move the lenses so that they're looking in a different direction - this makes the reticle appear stationary while the sight picture moves. In Russian PU type scopes the windage and elevation screws are attached to the reticle, so when you make adjustments you sight picture remains stationary while the reticle itself moves, supposedly this is one of the contributing factors to the PUs durability.
>>
>>31007428
No, I mean, your crosshairs are not in line with the rifle, the reticle isn't square.
>>
Now that Mosins are so high in price, what are the better milsurp alternatives?

Hey, anyone you guys got advice for de-cosmolining a Bulgarian Makarov?

I picked one up for jgsales for 300, it looks brand new and I don't think the poor thing has actually ever been fired. I don't speak bulgarian, but the only entry in the log book that came with the gun lists a date in 2005 and I suspect it was probably around when the Makarov was packed into cosmoline.

I have heard that putting all of the metal parts into an oven at around 150 will get rid of the cosmoline. Have any of you guys tried this out? Alternately I was considering soaking everything in degreasing soap for a couple of hours and then rinsing it with hot water, and then oiling the shit out of everything afterwards. If the oven thing works pretty well, I would prefer that to the degreasing soap and water approach.

I did a quick field strip and cleaned out most of the gunk and shit, but it definitely needs a much more serious clean. I will detail strip it this weekend and either oven clean it or soak in degreaser. Advice is appreciated.

Gotcha. How bad is the scent of mineral spirits? I can grab a bottle at walmart this weekend, but I live in a small apartment with other people and don't want to pester them with noxious odors. I have a private bathroom, do you think if I soaked the parts in a small container in the bathroom behind a closed door and used the ceiling fan in the other room that there would be an issue with the smell?

The smell is pretty strong. I suggest you pour the mineral spirits into a seal-able container outside, put the metal parts in it, seal it up, then bring it back inside. The next day, go outside to open it up, take the parts out, and wipe them down before coming back in.

Alright, fair enough. I'll just get a cheap toss away container when I go to walmart for the mineral spirits.

Do you think a quart sized resealable plastic bag inside another quart sized plastic bag would work? Otherwise I'll just buy some toss away container.

I'm pretty pumped for this makarov, I've been wanting one for a long time but only recently moved away from Commiefornia to a freedom state. It felt pretty awesome walking out of the store with my gun after filling out the 4473/passing the background check.

I'm sure .30-40 brass is still made- probably only once a year. You'll probably still be able to find loaded ammo somewhere. Learn to reload- you'll save about 40-50%.

I don't think these exist in the UK. If they did I'd have one by now, and I've certainly never seen one for sale. There are some late production rifles described as unfired for sale, but they've been out of the wrap many years in some cases and had owners.

I was looking for a wrapped one a couple of years back but ended up getting this essentially unfired, apart from proofing, Longbranch instead; which turned out great.
>>
>>31011375
how could they not exist in the UK, thats where they come from! id assume youd have a better shot at finding them there than here. they are rare even here in the states and go for a premium. in the wrap with wax paper and oil will go for over $1k easily, usually around $1200. i wish i bought one when they were $500 a few years back

http://www.gunbroker.com/item/577136700
http://www.gunbroker.com/item/577544113

i believe the ones in wrap are no4 mk2s that were made for ireland in the 50s or 60s

that one you have is beautiful, hell of a lot nicer than mine. the problem with an in the wrap enfield is you wont want to open and shoot it because the wrap is where all the value is. might as well get one like you have if you want to enjoy it
>>
>>31011375
also i just noticed you have the awesome target sights. what a great looking enfield bonganon. love the darker wood too, that thing looks immaculate. well so you do have an enfield and now you are looking to try other countries? how much do the k31/m96/gew98 go for in bongland? how hard are there ammo to find? is reloading legal in bongland? if you can make your own ammo that might negate some of the cons of picking one with harder to source ammo
>>

How difficult would it be for a left handed guy to convert a bolt action rifle to better accommodate his needs?
>>
>>31011424
>how could they not exist in the UK, thats where they come from! id assume youd have a better shot at finding them there than here.

I think that a large portion of LEs were exported. But there's a few other things:
1) Americans and people from other decent countries can and do collect firearms, for the last 20-30 years at least, perhaps much longer, that's not really practical for Britfags because of the way our licence works. If you have a rifle you generally shoot it, so these wrapped Enfields would probably have been unwrapped years ago.

2) Because no new ones have been made, many rifles exported, and unfired ones all fired, the rifles that are in the UK tend to have passed through many hands over the last 50 years or so. Some are very worn out. They were also broadly used as target rifles back in the early days after they were surplussed so new condition rifles would have been snatched up for that purpose.

Maybe there are a few at special dealer only auctions or something, but I've never seen one.
>>
>>31011516
pretty difficult and expensive. assuming you are talking about these old milsurp rifles and not a modern bolt rifle.

if you must have a left handed milsurp the best candidates would be straight pulls since you can just chop the bolt handle off one side and weld it to the other side. but with the cam system of turn bolt, its a lot more challenging
>>
>>31011548
i really hope one day you guys make some headway in your gun rights back to how you used to have them. its a shame you have so much red tape and bureaucracy just to get a bolt action 70 year old ww2 rifle for target shooting, maybe with the upcoming newer generations things will get better since kids growing up will see what they are missing out on

Speaking as a lefty with a safe of milsurp, learn to shoot a right handed rifle. Don't fuckup an M95 or a K11, if left handed people like us could shoot these rifles originally. We can for the most part also learn to be proficient with them
>>

i dont know, depends on your gunsmith fees. ask your local gunsmith, id guess for a simple hack and weld on a straight pull its gonna cost at least a couple hundred bucks. for an actual turn bolt conversion, youd have to source a modern day left hand turnbolt and somehow fit it, i have no idea im not a gunsmith or engineer. sucks dude! maybe get good at shooting both left and right handed, could be a useful skill to have regardless. i practice shooting on my weakside every so often just to be able to, you never know if you might need to
>>
>>31011580
plus my eyes are better on my weakside. unfortunately, im right handed but left eye dominant. i see better in my left eye and naturally use it for focusing but im right handed so i have to use my weaker right eye for shooting. thats another reason im trying to get better at shooting left handed
>>
>>31011592
damn thats a tiny swinger! how far do you set that up to shoot? how do you fare with that m95? what kind of ammo do you shoot? reloads or that nazi surp that was on the market a few years back?

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. I think it'll be best for me to just learn to shoot right handed.

Just shoot them left handed, it's not hard.

>love the darker wood too
Thanks, that's part of the reason I bought it over others. North American Black Walnut and bluing is THE classic look of a rifle for me.

>other countries?
I've got two Swedes. An m/96 civilian target rifle and a m/96-38, going price for a decent Swede is actually pretty reasonable by bong standards, although I've seen some jacked up rices too. I payed £550 for my very clean 38 with a good bore. K31s not too common, dunno the price but about the same as other good milsurp. Nuggets are like £250+. I don't think I've ever seen a real Gew98 (but I'm sure there are examples about) just some gaudy anniversary model with a brightly polished receiver left in the white.

Ammo isn't really hard to find, I've never seen a place out of .22lr for instance. Most centrefire is readily available but it seems to me a lot of store stock less variety of brands and loads that what US /k/ommandos appear used to. Reloading is about the least regulated thing about shooting, 100% legal except not everyone can buy non FMJ bullets for shit reasons but basically you need to be a hunter and not just a range shooter.

I don't think there's any hope of it to be honest. Guns are so far removed from the lives of 95% of people that they just don't think about them, or have any desire to shoot them. Also everything's very urban-centric here, young people aren't interested in going into the country and shooting. I think there's a real lack of interest in shooting and what people might think of as old hand skills that go along with it, like metal working, wood working etc. People are too trapped in their shitty, tiny little suburban box houses, most men are lucky to have a small shed to keep a few tools and work in. For the most part anyway.

Also through control and licencing, and the prohibitive cost of shooting, it's very hard for people to get into it. That's all calculated, they want to make it inaccessible.

seems like you are different people since you are saying you have some swedes. i love my swedes so much. probably my favorite rifles to shoot because they are SO mild on the shoulder. thats great about reloading then. even here in the USA, if you are a milsurp shooter the most economical way to shoot is to reload. most of these calibers are fairly obsolete and there arent a lot of cheap options for target ammo

cheers m8 i raise my pint glass to you. take me shooting next time i come to bongistan. last time i was there i visited the countryside around warwick and stratford upon avon. i loved those little towns in the area and the sense of community in the pubs there. every little town had its own pub that all the farmers hung out at the end of each day, was so cool to see how everyone knew each other. 10/10 experience for me, i would move to those comfy farmtowns and sit by my comfy hearth in the winter reading a book and smoking a pipe with my shepherd dog at my feet and an old smle hanging on the wall over the fireplace in direct violation of her majesty's firearms storage act of 1998

Yup, that's a different guy. If he's still around he should the the Swede and reload for it, but ammo is easy to find.

And yeah, what you saw there is about the only good part of the UK, not uncommon though in the good areas.

what are those target sights called? do they clamp to receiver or do you need to drill a hole for mounting? i like that alot. i also love putting my guns in snow ill see if i can find some pics

That particular type is called a Soderin, I'm not sure if there was a sub model designation. You have to drill the receiver unfortunately. That rifle's a mix master, it's also bedded with some oldschool putty type compound too.

Man up and shoot left handed. It's not hard. Unless you aren't up for being challenged.

this. spent the afternoon cleaning a tula hex and near boiling point water works so well.

>>31012177
im telling you hot water works better than solvents, the cosmo just melts away and you dont have to worry about pouring flammable liquids down a sink afterwards. you just have to be 100% sure you dry all the water then oil but thats pretty easy
