>The Chinese have launched the first satellite that can achieve quantum communications between space and Earth. The launch of the Quantum Science Satellite – called Micius – took place at 17:40 UTC on Monday using a Long March-2D (Chang Zheng-2D) launch vehicle from the 603 Launch Pad of the LC43 complex at the Jiuquan space center.

>The new satellite is dedicated to quantum science experiments. The Quantum Space Satellite, (or Quantum Experiments at Space Scale) will test the phenomena of quantum entanglement.

>Operated by the China Academy of Sciences, this 500 kg satellite – announced as the name “Micius” in honor of a fifth century Chinese scientist – contains a quantum key communicator, quantum entanglement emitter, entanglement source, processing unit, and a laser communicator.

>QUESS will relay transmissions between two ground stations (one in China, and the other in Europe) transmitting quantum keys.

>During the mission, Chinese scientists will implement a series of science missions between the satellite and quantum communication ground stations.

>QSS will operate on a Sun-synchronous circular orbit with an altitude of 600 km.

>One of the major objectives of the mission is to set a Quantum Key Distribution from satellite to ground, setting an ultra-long-range quantum channel between ground and satellite with the assistance of high-precision acquisition, tracking and pointing system, implement a quantum key distribution between the satellite and the ground stations, and carry out unconditional secure quantum communication experiments.

It's over.

China won.

what the fuck is all that shit can someone explain ? how does quantum transmit? wtf is an emitter? im not einstein but this shit sounds too good to be true

>literally just a testbed to perform experiments towards figuring out whether using quantum states is even viable for communication (protip- probably not)
>and maybe transmit encryption keys in a more conventional format

That's it, pack it up. We're BTFO forevermore to a quantum level. It's been a good run, but this Chinaman wins infinity.

This isn't even really weapons related but this article is soooooo awesome sauce.
>>
>>30994756
>not weapon related

it would be, if experiements yield good results.

hack-proof communications would be the key to every war.

Honestly bro, I'm skeptical. I wasn't aware we as humans were quite capable of quantum entanglement communication yet

If i understand correctly, you can "pair" quantum particles together so that what happens to one, happens to the other. And you could theoretically transmit information that way
>>
This will fail. You can't use quantum entanglement to communicate.

Quantum entanglement basically works like this:

You have two cards, one white, one black. You put them both into a grey envelope. Then, you completely randomly give one of the two to someone that's gonna go to the other side of the world. Once they're there, you open the envelope you have.

You -instantly-, faster than the speed of light, know the color of the other person's card. Yet, no information has been transmitted.

Same deal with quantum entanglement, because the moment you try to alter the state of particle A in order to communicate info through particle B, you lose entanglement.
>>
>>30994687
Quantum entanglement is having 2 particles that act as if they are one, regardless of actual separation, so if you observe the state of one you are observing the state of the other as well. Notionally this means you can have perfectly secure (there is no in-between medium to be eavesdropped) instantaneous (fuck that lightspeed bullshit) communication by inputting data to one part of your entangled pair and receiving it from the other. In other words, fucking magic. Last I read it kind of barely worked in lab environments under extremely specific conditions, and data rates were laughably none existent, but the core concept of entanglement at least did work.
Does this mean the Chinese have super wonder tech miles ahead of filthy gaijin? No, just they're playing around with it and making propaganda noise because RARA GO CHINA. Unless of course they've somehow leapfrogged decades ahead of the whole rest of the world in a super cutting edge field, which is doubtful to say the least.
>>
Not even close. First this is a test satellite not a functioning network. Second the bit rate for optical fiber quantum communication sucks, and any communication via broadcasted photons must necessarily be lower, means this system will be utter shit and transmitting secure info. Third at 600km the satellite will be at pretty much the lowest possible orbit which means its lifetime will be short. Fourth, because this is insecure photon communication, as MIT showed, it is possible to intercept the communication and copy the data without destroying the photon (by entangling the received photon with another one), hence defeating the quantum nature of communication.

>>30994802
The corniness is self-explanatory.
>>
>>30994862
i think i remember reading about this. how does the particle get 'entangled' with the other one? are they connected through another dimension or something? bypassing space? THE UPSIDE DOWN

>>30994862
Quantum communication relies on entangled photons not particles because photons travel much faster, and have significantly lower rates of disentanglement when traveling through a medium. In 99, Los Alamos transmitted entangeled photons over 10 miles in an optical fiber; however, transmitting in a fiber is significantly easier than air because you can control the makeup of the optical fiber whereas air density and composition vary widely.

China already has a land-based quantum communications network connecting major cities.

http://www.gizmoids.com/2016/06/quantum-communications-line-connecting-beijing-and-shanghai-by-china/

>QUANTUM COMMUNICATIONS LINE CONNECTING BEIJING AND SHANGHAI BY CHINA

>In several cities we find China has begun establishing quantum communications networks. They are now building a 1,000 km quantum communications line that will connect Beijing and Shanghai. On Tuesday the People’s Daily reported that China has used the principles of quantum physics to enable quantum communication to provide a new way of not only processing information but also includes encoding, storage, transmission and logic operations, also the precise manipulation of photons, atoms and other microscopic particles. In July, for the first time in this world we will see China launching its first experimental quantum communications satellite.
>>
>>30994929

Wait, why do they need a line?

Is the point of this shit to avoid lines?
>>
>>30994957
tests were usually done with lines in the past. After all, it is a photon (light).

the first one to test one without lines is with this satellite.
>>
>>30994929
>>30994656

OH GOD DAMMIT.

They are just using quantum mechanics to generate key's. Its a fancy Keygen. It works becuase its impossible to man in the middle it, but it just transmits the encryption keys.

Fuckin christ, fucking clickbait, god damn chicoms.

I mad.
>>
>>30994971
>After all, it is a photon (light)

We call that fibop in the real world.

I already mad. From what i understand no communication is actually being quantum propagated, just keygens.

Stupid fucking shit.

Its not quantum communication. Its Quantum cryptography.
>>
>>30994656
Bull fucking shit
>>
>>30994996
They are testing both with that satellite, actually.

The land-line is cryptography only, but the satellite will test entanglement, synchronization and teleportation.
>>
>first Quantum Communication Satellite
>The Austrian Academy of Sciences provided the optical receivers for the European ground stations.

>It's over.
>China won.
Why did you omit the part with Chinese needing European collaborators?
>>
>>30995019
To preempt Murricant's from claiming that Chinks make up claims.

A western partner is needed to validate their results.

All the more delicious if it turns out that it works.
>>
>>30995019
Read the article.

China and Austria both have a ground station to send photons to the satellite, each ten thousand kms apart.

The first "quantum internet" will hence be established between Austria and China, as their ground-stations are the receivers.

>tfw Austria is in Egypt according to these journalists
>>
>>30995033
>A western partner is needed to validate their results.
>All the more delicious if it turns out that it works.
Yea, but the Austrians will know the results and spread information in their journals so China is basically doing free work for the West.

>>
>>30995070
That's normal and accepted, as China releases their findings in nature/science as well all the time.

http://www.nature.com/news/china-s-quantum-space-pioneer-we-need-to-explore-the-unknown-1.19166

As of now, there is barely any specific military use, so these fundamental research can benefit all humanity.
>>
>>30994656
What's with all the China posts here recently?

How is this even /k/ related?

>>30995033
Are you the same guy that gets mad about Americans in every single China thread?
>>
>>30995100
So what's there to brag if China doesn't keep it as a secret military tech? It's just an experiment, an open one at that.
>>
>>30995111
They usually copy paste articles, spin it a bit then somehow China looks better to a bunch of tards on a Paraguayan insurance fraud chalkboard.

Then they get mad when opposition shows up.
>>
>>30995018

Actually, based upon the experiments, they are not.

Its quantum entanglement cryptography, nothing more. You don't need a sat to test the other things, it just removes tampering from a test vehicle.

There is no need to make this something its not.

>>
>>30994831
This is how it works.

Everyone move along.

Information can only be transmitted at the speed of light, there is no workaround for this in accepted theory or general use, sorry to burst your bubble.
>>
>>30994656

The only reason I know anything about this is because the Illusive Man uses entanglement to explain why he's able to communicate across the galaxy with no delay.

You know what? Good on them. China finally starting to peak it's head out of the clusterfuck that is Mao and his whole circus of running a country through the ground.

Is US still lagging behind in terms of kids getting and going into the science/engineering field?
>>
>>30995462
Mao wasnt the problem, but a mere symptom.
Desperate times call for radical solutions, and Mao was such one.

The real original sin was the Opium War, the Taiping Rebellion and the general weakness of the Qing Dynasty, all leading to the single largest fall of a world-power since the end of the Roman Empire.
