If you're going to CC, a .38 will do, just make sure you get a good load that meets FBI qualifications for penetration, has good expansion and hope that you have the foresight not to get into a situation where you might have to use it.

Just my opinion, unless you live in the country, I think rifles are a poor choice for HD. I've responded to multiple NDs in urban areas and apartment complexes. Handgun rounds fly through these units and rifle rounds are even more crazy. Seeing an AR round that traveled through a living room wall, fridge, bedroom wall, exterior wall, window, then bathroom wall before being stopped by a bathtub made me know that a shotgun with 00 and a 45 with hollow points would be my only HD choices, ever.

This all depends on where you live desu.
If you live in an apartment complex with thin shitty walls, go with what the one anon said and load up some 12ga birshot and .45 JHPs. If you live in a house with solid sturdy walls you have more wiggle room with your rifle and shotgun loads, but it's best to keep in the low-pressure side. It's all situation based.

FFS do not use birdshot for self defense. It does not reliably penetrate enough to stop someone. You know the FBI has these lovely standards about how much ammo should penetrate. Guess what? Birdshot doesn't meet those.

As for .45 JHP's they will remain stable for longer than 9mm will because it is a large round moving slowly. Small fast rounds destabilize and become less dangerous quicker.

Well, looking at gel tests, it seems good if you use a magnum turkey load or something equivalent and have a choke or are shooting from really close ranges. Otherwise the pellets spread too much and lack velocity. They couldn't penetrate muscle well and definitely wouldn't go past bone.

My Model 64 pulls double duty for CC and home defense. I find it to be adequate for the role.
