Scent, I would assume. I really don't know how my dog does it. We've tracked down two lambs, one cat (though that was mere luck) and two dogs.
I just let him study the place where the animal slept and then he either picks up the trail or not. Obviously I can't track animals that sleep inside as I need discrete access to their sleeping place and I do this in secret. Obviously a successful tracking is rewarded. I also sometimes hide treats in the woods for him to find, and occasionally have a hunting buddy of mine hide some treats in the woods.

My dog was trained by my dad and I got him when he was two years old. Hes six now. My dad said I should kerp training her but I really don't know the methods. So we track animals occasionally, it's more like a play to him.

I've been thinking of taking a course on k9 tracking of people lost in the wilderness so I could help local forest rangers if need be.
