Let's start with this. You know why we need fast stealthy planes? Because countries like Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, hell even Iraq pre-invasion, have missiles and AAA that will pop aircraft that without those features. Russia and China sell their SAM systems worldwide, and their modern models are immediate death to anything without stealth. That, not air to air combat, is the reason the AF cares so much about stealth--we can't fly into SAM rings to deliver bombs to support the ground mission if we die the moment we enter those rings.

As for fast and high-flying, yep that helps avoid SAMs and AAA too: all the tactical SAMs like MANPADS and the small vehicle sorts, and ALL of the AAA. You know, the same sort of equipment that was blowing giant holes in A-10s when they were doing strikes against the Iraqi Republican Guard? Sure, the A-10s got home safe, and then were totally unflyable past that point without months of back shop overhauls to replace engines and wings and hydraulic systems. The F-16s had to take over their vehicle hunting ops--fast, high-flying F-16s who gave no fucks about AAA or tactical SAMs.

You know the other thing fast movers do well? They get to where troops are needing CAS really quickly, instead of leaving them hanging. You know what the plane with the highest kill count in Afghanistan is? The B-1. You know what it is? Fast.

I don't touch air to air, I spend literally all day every day doing planning and training for blowing up ground targets while preventing collateral damage. And you know something? My AFSC gets a lot of support and funding to do that. The amount of money spent on improving air to ground munitions and targeting devices would stagger you--billions of dollars on laser targeting pods, bomb tailkits, and bombs that can be dropped almost right on top of the guys calling in CAS without injuring them--but it's not sexy so it doesn't make the news like a shiny fighter jet does. That old motto "not a pound for air to ground" is dead. Nobody is getting air to air kills anyway in GWOT, so the pilots who are getting the glory are the ones who go pull a patrol's worth of infantry asses out of the fire with well-placed JDAMs. In the joint environment we all are in these days, we actually are friends with the Army and Marine personnel, and we do give a major fuck about not letting our buddies get shot.

The reason we in the AF are so excited about the fucking F-35 is because we can help the grunts better. We can get there fast, be on station a long time with its huge fuel reserve, assist even if there is enemy anti-air equipment nearby, have great sensors to prevent friendly fire, and great comms to talk to the ground forces needing support. Air to ground is the future, and the AF realizes that.

But go ahead and whine some more about how wanting to retire the obsolete A-10 means the AF is out of touch.

You must rise up to at least a sergeant and then you can go "green to gold" or what the fuck ever it is you want to do. Officers should be enlisted first because lower enlisted are the only ones who actually do the job.
