Why do we never see any full retard military projects anymore?
>>
>>30979156
Because they are idiotic. In fact the whole of the military industrial complex should be stripped to the bare minimum, along with the armed forces and taxation brought down to enough just to barley supply justice, infastructre and military.
>>
The Cold War has settled down so the military doesn't have justification for designing insane weapons

That project wasn't full retard, it's just that anti-nukes like to use it as their poster-child.
>>

the technology behind pluto could have been used for ultra endurance atmospheric exploration of gas giants, Venus, and with shielding and further iterations, changed how we traveled on earth.

Instead we caved to anti nuke, bought oil, enabled the middle east to grow into the fucking mess it is.

Read for this? Liberals of that time were a russian social weapon to fight the US. By creating a quagmire that cascaded they could slow down the US and protect themselves.

The movements already existed, but the russians funded, organized, and weaponized them.

*clapclap* thanks Russia.

Yup. Can't blame the Russians, they played the really long game strategically against us, which is only now truly bearing its rotten fruit.
>>
>>30981242
>changed how we traveled on earth.
No. other planets, sure, but not earth.
Maybe the Nuclear B-36 could've, but not Pluto.

Furthermore the anti-nuclear movement was far more nuanced than Russian shills. There were all kinds of interesting forces interacting, including failure to deliver on the promises of nuclear hype in the 1950s.

>Instead we caved to anti nuke, bought oil, enabled the middle east to grow into the fucking mess it is.
The USA was making agreements with the Saud family and plotting to overthrow various governments before Pluto was even on the drawing board.
>>
>>30982609
>>30981889
Was alluding to the B-36 concept and where it could have gone with more evolution. Though don't get me wrong, I think a shielded Pluto could have worked.

the US had its fair share of nation building, but I am curious as to what other elements were there beyond Russian shills. You could argue the UK, you could also argue the burgeoning Israel. US and Israel weren't super buddy buddy until later in the game.
>>
>>30979473
Best multi-role.
>>
We need more of this now. Why couldn't a nuclear powered plane be developed now? It could charge batteries for an electric lift vehicle. I bet the US could develop such a plane if it wanted to.

I actually thought of something similar to the pluto slam

But instead, it'd have twin Nuclear pulse-jet engines off of the sides

It would be very similar to pic related, But much, MUCH larger

I would estimate the side engines individually would be almost Thrice the size of of 747 engines

It'd take up the SOME roles of Multirole aircraft, mainly CAS/VCAS,

Hopefully phase out attack helis, this thing would have internal missile/rocket pods and at least two different autocannons for use in different targets

>57mm twin-barreled autocannon with high explosive/fragmenting shells
>35mm rotary cannon with High Velocity Armor Piercing shells
>76mm rocket pod
>small internal bay for Freefall ordinance such as mines, HE bombs, Thermobaric bombs, etc
>larger internal bay for J-DAMS, Bunker Busters, ASM's, Missiles, etc
>>

>>
>>30985368
I know that it was feasible, but that video is great, thank you. It was, and still is, one of the best propulsion systems for our current level of technology and it can be scaled upwards to a ridiculous degree. Werner "the absolute mad kraut" von Braun had plans for a ship with a 400m diameter with a mass of 8 million tons that flew on a thousand 3000t hydrogen bombs.
>>
>>30985368
>>30979331
Yes, this isn't a crazy idea at all. If you wanted a ship to quickly accelerate in space, then this is a great method. I think we will see this is the near future.
>>
>>30979331
This project has nothing to do with Von Braun.
>>
>>30985443
I thought it was Teller, not Von Braun, who first thought of this. Then it was picked up by General Atomics.

before WW2 the USA military wanted to make an aircraft carrier out of an airship. they made one and the other two got cancelled. Akron-class airship and could carry 5 to 8 biplanes

after WW2 the USA wanted to still make flying aircraft carrier and the way to do it was with microfighters and this was the McDonnell XF-85 Goblin parasite fighter

too bad none of this worked it looked pretty cool

There is probably a lot of weird stuff going on.

>after WW2 the USA wanted to still make flying aircraft carrier and the way to do it was with microfighters and this was the McDonnell XF-85 Goblin parasite fighter
They had the idea more than once

They had the B-36 thing with the Goblin.

The L-1201 with what I can only assume were F-104s or something

Then we got the 747-AAC concept.

What's quite fun is that the (Boeing produced) document considers the C-5 as an alternative carrier airframe, but largely glosses over it quickly to emphasise the 747 is preferable.
>>
>>30986358
It was shuffled around a lot. Apparently it got started at los Alamos, shifted to General Atomics, went by Freeman Dyson, and in the one of the least surprising turn of events in American history Robert "the cock-blocker" McNamara denied defense funding for it. So the team took it to NASA where it finally came to a halt despite von Braun campaigning for it over his own Saturn rocket because nuclear power fear-mongering and the partial test-ban treaty.

>>

The same is broadly true of all aircraft carriers.

Though I assume had it been built then in practice it would be used to attack targets in joke countries that would have difficulty shooting down a target drone, let alone a military aircraft hovering at the limit of their range and with some fighter defence.

they were worse than the planes which were supposed to intercept those bombers, anyway its easier to have a proper outside escort than those abominations

the arcon attempt was more interesting, but zeppelins were way to vulnerable and prone to crashes to be useful, arcon could both launch and retrieve prop planes... biplanes but i guess other ones could be modified too
>>
>>30988941
So, is this thread in agreement that the F35 is good at what it is meant to do, but that for the same price of a fleet of F35, you can get a way bigger fleet of cheaper, differently specialized jets that will do an as good of a job while covering more ground?
