Buy a cheap knife with soft steel. Find a gritty rock in your backyard for re-profiling. Finish it on the bottom of a coffee mug. Done.

well, I've tried to do the three step vidya of yours, but i cant seem to get much of an apex.. what grit do you recommend trying it on? I think you used a King 1k in the video, so is that pretty much the way to go? Also, you should think about making a video of your setup, would be great to see what a pro uses
>>
>>30975722
Neat.

>>
>>30976384

Can you consistently get good results using a burr based method with a ~400 grit stone? If not, you should concentrate on that first, because it will teach you how a sharp apex behaves.

Assuming you have a solid grasp of the basics:

For a three step approach a 1k waterstone should be fine as long ad the edge hadn't been heavily blunted or have any visible nicks.

It shouldn't take more than 5 or 10 minutes to eliminate the light reflecting from the apex on the 1k stone. If you still have light reflecting off the apex from a directed light source after 10 minutes of grinding on a 1k, then either you are not holding the right angle or the edge was too damaged, in either case you should go to a lower grit of stone (~400 range) and work at that grit until you can eliminate light reflecting from the apex. Once done at least make 5-10 alternating edge leading only low force passes per side to minimize the burr before moving to the next stone.

At that point, you can go back to using the 1k to raise the level of polish of the apex, remembering to alternate sides frequently.

>>
>>30976482
The newer gerber knives are high fucking quality
>>
>>30976496
Well, i do alright with the burr based on 600 grit.

So instead of a 1k waterstone, i have this, https://www.amazon.com/Smiths-TRI-6-Arkansas-TRI-HONE-Sharpening/dp/B00062BIT4
should i wait and grab a king 1k? Or do you think they'll preform the same.(pic related is also my 600 grit) I'll try going to the lower grit while i wait for a response
>>
>>30976545
But they're all in pristine condition. Only the opinel looks used
>>
>>30976610

You should be able to use a three step approach with the 600 grit for shaping the edge bevel and even setting the apex, it will just be a coarse apex finish.

I recommend waterstones for the three step method mainly because they are convenient because they cut fast and the slurry helps minimize burr formation, they are by no means required.

I can, and have, used a three step method on just a Norton India Fine oilstone (~320 grit) to shape the edge bevel and then set the apex at a slightly elevated angle.

The only extra consideration with the type of stones you have is the need to be extra careful to not press too hard and to use burr minimization techniques once you finish shaping the edge bevel but before moving to a higher grit stone to raise the polish or setting the apex.

>>
>>30976697
Zero tolerance are decent, a bit high price but overall pretty solid. The zt 0450 is one of the smoothed production knives I've used.

Benchmade I personally hate, but they are nice and generally well made. Osborne 940 is as high rated as it is for a reason, and the mini grip is popular for a reason.
>>
>>30976440
I loosened it enough to deploy and lock with one hand, after that it's wonderful. When you get it it's too stiff to deploy without two hands
>>
>>30976681
So is the microbevel a need-to-do process? I hit it on the 600, polished on 1000, and shes quite nice, but will the microbevel really help that much? Thanks for all of the help btw, nice channel as well
>>
>>30976796
Had a feeling it would come like that. Lock up solid though? Seems like it would be, just unfamiliar.

So decided on a paramilitary to replace my endura. Probably just gonna get the basic s30v, bit I noticed one in s110v for 178, and I was wondering how decent that price was.

Sprint runs with different metals worth it in general?

Microtech balisongs flip well. The Tachyon 2 has titanium t-latch, sandwich ti handles and is available in bowie, modified bowie, and tanto blades. Don't remember what blade steel and too lazy to look. Tachyon 3 has channel titanium handles, titanium spring latch, and an adjustable titanium pocket clip that stays out of the way when flipping but there for carrying. Only available in one blade style (unless you count the trainer) and I don't remember the steel on that one either. The original Tachyon is a bit of a collector's item now.
I've yet to flip any MT bali's but the general consensus is that they flip okay but disappointing for the price range, but fuck Microtech. Shitty ceo, shitty screws, a bit overpriced MSRP.

>>30974619
Balisongs are still knives, they just work slightly differently. Most of the low price/low quality ones, especially Bear & Sons/Bear Ops don't flip very well and don't last long. But some have decent blade steels and sharpness and can still work as a regular knife. Arguably the best EDC butterfly would be a Benchmade Model 51, either with FlyTanium scales or even the stock G10 scales could work. Decent flipper, titanium liners, stainless spacers, D2 steel blade, spring latch, pocket clip. Stock prices are shit though, get a good condition one off the secondary market from $150-170 because it definitely isn't worth $230. If you don't mind having to do actual work to get the knife to open it works, if not, don't do it.

Setting the apex with a microbevel is integral to a three step approach. The approach is named that for the following three steps:

1) Cut off the old apex, removing any fatigued metal, and creating a flat that will reflect light from a directed source.

2) Shape the edge bevel at your chosen edge bevel angle until it no longer reflects light.

3) Set the apex by creating a microbevel with a small number (5-10 passes per side) of passes at a higher angle than the edge bevel. The angle need only be slightly higher than the edge bevel angle.

>>30977131

What kind of sharpening equipment do you have? Sharpening s110v on anything other than diamond plates or silicon carbide oilstones or waterstones is going to be an exercise in frustration.

Otherwise, everything s30v does, s110v does better. Mediocre razor sharpness edge retention, phenomenal working edge retention.

Water stones. Was more wondering about relative value at that point, as more frequent sharpening doesn't bother me, but if its a decent price fora more wear resistant steel, why not spend the extra money.

>>
Is the espada from cold steel any good? Not the fuck huge one but the smaller and moddle size for edc?
>>
>>30980619

Should be ok on s110v as long as you flatten the stones immediately prior to use and try to keep them as muddy as possible.

If don't mind sharpening more frequently, the s30v is a much better value I think. S110v really shines for people who run fairly coarse edges and want to sharpen as infrequently as humanly possible.

I keep my knives touched up frequently, so for me even s30v has basically zero advantage over VG10 because I don't let my knives get dull enough for the wear resistance to play a big role.

a used BRS replicant could fit your price segment for a really good flipper, check http://jerzeedevil.com

>>
>>30981380

Something around 300-600 grit seems like a sensible choice for a steel like s30v.

You can mirror polish it if you want, but s30v has low apex stability, so don't expect the high sharpness edge retention to be that great.

>>30986148

As he said, Bark River sells a 16 micron CBN emulsion that is the same one I have. Kent makes inexpensive diamond pastes available on eBay, just remember to go down a few microns for a CBN equivalence because the paste doesn't embed as deep and the stuff isn't graded as finely as the CBN emulsions.

10-12 micron diamond or 16 micron CBN give an apex finish like a 6k-8k waterstone

30 micron CBN or ~20 micron diamond give an apex finish like a 3-5k waterstone.

Avoid anything that comes in a bar as those types of compounds are a bad idea with wear resistant steels.

then well..nothing its just that its a 5-1/2 knife which seems like over kill..i also had a rajah 2 which i also carried and that thing was 6 inches

i guess i was just a fan of big knives.
>>
>>30986586
so is there any real difference with the 10 micron diamond vs 16 micron CBN? Or will they finish exactly the same? Also what happens if you use the bar on wear resistant steels? does it just like round over the edge or something?

>>30987447

The easiest would be to send them to someone to sharpen, the second easiest would be to buy a high end guided system and use it for coarse edge finishes.

>>30987702

Only do this if you enjoy your knife being turned into a toothpick by power sharpening, and the heat trearment being damaged, and the massive burr it's likely to leave.

Never let anyone power sharpen your knives unless you know enough to be sure they aren't going to fuck them up. Only let people HAND SHARPEN your knives if you absolutely must send them to someone else instead of learning to do it yourself.

>>30988363

They should behave similarly. Basically the I think the diamond pastes don't embed in the leather as deep, and because the diamond paste are cheaper they have less stringent control over particle size. That's why I always recommend going down a few microns in comparing diamond to CBN.

It has nothing to do with any inherent properties of diamond vs CBN, just how the compounds are made.

As for the bars, they are usually made of an aluminum oxide abrasive that can end up ploughing out the steel at the apex on wear resistant steels, but being unable to cut the harder carbides. This leaves a weak apex prone to carbide tear out in use. Diamond or CBN will cut the carbides as easily as the steel, hence no issues with weakening the steel matrix at the apex.

If you want, I can try and dig up a reference about this of you are interested.

I wasn't even here, dawg. I was busy having fun at a music festival all weekend. Some of us actually leave the house, go to the woods, do shrooms, and get our dicks wet. But just like everything else I've said I do, you'll all just assume that's a lie, too.

So here's my newest obsessions with my older obsessions, m8. Halo V clone on dhgate is confirmed a golden purchase of knife purchases. $55 and it outshines my ZT, Spyderco, and SOG in function/form. It easily took the title of being my favorite. Shit sucks I can't carry it in public.

Yes sir. Bought it off Amazon along with a 940-1 last Friday.

I have the 940-1 in a box ready to ship back. Not worth the $290 I paid, imo. I mean, for that price, I could've gotten a legit Ultratech and it just didn't seem to really match that kind of quality vs the price-point.

Probably going to return and buy a CS Talwar, another Voyager XL but with plain edge, and a Benchmade Barrage.

Oh, the fit/finish on it is just stunning. Easily one of my prettiest knives. Only thing that concerns me is stop-pin looks a little thin. Other than that, it's easily my best flipper. The blade polish is good, the stonewash accents are nice. The carbon fiber has a surprising amount of grip to it, because its not highly polished. It has a bit of a smooth but grippy texture to it. It feels/looks like a knife designed for a fucking astronaut. Lol

Is this a good knife for just carrying around town? I don't want anything fancy in case I lose it or something.

Assist open knives are illegal here as far as I know so I don't think I can get one of those. At least Amazon won't ship one to my state...
>>
>>30980217
No, the blade/handle is so large if I pinch the lock without holding the blade with my other hand it will fall closed on my fingers.
>>
>>30996638
New York? If you live in an area that isn't culturally very knife friendly you may want something less tactical looking. SOG has a mixed reputation in terms of quality.

Lockback is pretty strange for a pocket knife. But if you're happy with the blade steel, size, weight, and locking mechanism it's probably a safe option.
>>
>>30996783
Yeah, but for whatever reason I can take this knife to checkout.

https://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-Black-Glassbreaker-Knife-SpeedSafe/dp/B0074FIPEM/

It's a bit more expensive and less tactical which is pretty good since I'm not in a knife friendly area. After thinking about it, I kind of want to have the glassbreaker feature as well. Other than that, I'm fine with it being pretty basic.

Be aware that in New York the cops have a vague test that can rule just about every folding knife a "gravity knife."

A law to fix this passed the legislature but it still needs to be signed by the governor. http://www.kniferights.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=292&Itemid=1

spyderco helped cold steel start (literally set them up with the factory they produced in in japan) and saw cold steel as the little brother company. They allows the right of the S shaped blade that they do for that.

I will say that spyderco isn't too keen on doing that anymore since cold steel's stance on owning the word and process of san mai as well as the insult videos Cold steel made about spyderco knives.

And the spyderco bug is so small you could keister it into prison with minimal discomfort. Also it doesn't require any tools, pin construction.

Why?, Ti isn't an expensive material(nor is it magical, hence the steel lockbar inserts on more expensive knives), can be expensive to work but at one point the Russians were using Ti to make things like shovels because they had an excess they couldn't sell.

I use my pocket knives as stand ins for paring and petty knives in the kitchen because it lets me use knives I enjoy using more.

>>
>>30999181

Have you tried coloring the edge bevel with permanent marker and then seeing if the stones remove it all the way to the apex on the 20 degree setting?

You could consider adding the diamond or CBN rods to the Sharpmaker to increase cutting speed, or you could try to learn to freehand with a Norton India coarse/fine oilstone, some mineral oil, and some practice.
>>
>>30999181
I'm going to copy and paste the writeup I did for the last person who asked about the Sharpmaker, since I'm not sure they got it.

Lay the medium rods horizontally (like a benchstone) and draw the entire edge across them like you're slicing into them. Basically this just removes the edge in case the edge is fucked up and leaves you with a blank slate (easier to sharpen than a damaged edge).

Then set the edges into the 15 or 20 degree slot, whichever is closer the angle of your knife. Keep your knife vertical and draw them down the rods, alternating each pass. The key is to use light pressure, not much more than the weight of the knife. To ensure you're hitting the edge, color it with a sharpie. The sharpie marks should wear away evenly. If not, try the other slot or adjust the angle you hold the knife. Try not to make a burr.

After enough passes, you should be able to cut through paper cleanly. If you want them to be better slicers, then repeat the process on the fine rods, just make sure to use lighter pressure. If it's a working knife, I'd probably just stop after finishing on the medium rods.

Now if your knives are really dull, then you're going to need a courser option to speed things along (you could do it with the medium rods, it would just take a whooooole lot longer). If you don't want to shell out for Spyderco's diamond/CBN rods, you could try Congress Tool's triangular rods (though it's a gamble whether they'll fit nicely in the slots). You could also clip some coarse sandpaper to the rods and strop upwards.

If you do get Spyderco's coarse rods, make sure you use really light pressure. If you go to hard, you could strip the abrasive out of the stone.
>>
>>31002033

Excellent, solid, clearly written advice.

The Sharpmaker really should come with rods coarser than the mediums. Its very easy for a beginner to get extremely frustrated trying to do substantial grinding with them.

>>
>>30992679
So how come in that thread, everyone is toting 1 micron or half micron equipment, but you rock quite a bit higher? Is it because they use hard surfaces while you put the tape under the strop?
>>
>>31003018

Because, as far as I can tell, I was the first person online to figure out how dramatically strops increase the effect grit of stopping compounds, and that virtually all issues people had with "over stropping" actually resulted from using compounds that were much too fine and which removed all slicing aggression from the apex if used for more than a small handful of passes.

I figured it out because I noticed that the apparent "killed edge" that a lot of people blamed on rounding of the apex actually just felt the same as a Spyderco UF benchstone apex, I.e. overly fine and lacking in slicing aggression. Once I started experimenting with coarser compounds, it confirmed my suspicions as to what was going on.

I could make 500 passes per side on my 16 micron CBN strop and the apex would never lose the ability to cleanly slice folded over paper towel.

Do you mean to carry the knife in your boot or are you just looking for a small knife of the variety that's often called a boot/neck knife? Because if you're thinking about boot carry I'd advise against it unless you absolutely have to conceal your knife 100%. After my high school absorbed a bunch of "troubled youth" transfers post-Katrina I started to carry a knife in my boot and I'd move it to my pocket as soon as I was on the bus because it took forever to get at it.

You might just want to look into a high quality folder, once you're an adult nobody really pays attention to a pocket clip.

I have a YouTube channel dedicated to sharpening, I suggest starting with the burr based sharpening tutorial, some cheap knives, a Norton India combination coarse/fine, and some mineral oil.

Once you can consistently get an apex that will cleanly slice newsprint off the fine India, then you can start thinking about moving on to more stones or a three step approach.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWU_qTp3DLM

That's the burr based sharpenimg tutorial.

Any of the diamond pastes on eBay should be fine to start. if you want a very finely graded compound, Bark River sells the same 16 micron CBN emulsion I use

For a 10 degree edge bevel, I would tape some relatively thick leather to wood backing, but not glue it. If you glue the leather down it looses a lot of its compressibility and induces much less of a convex in the microbevel. This is desirable for people who use 15-20 degree per side (dps) edge bevels, but not a desirable trait at 10dps.

You can also sand the leather to turn it I to suede if you want to increase the microscopic convexing further. I do that because I run ~7-9 dps edge bevels mostly.
>>
>>31008310

That 10 and 14 set looks pretty good to me, also gives you two grits to compare. Just remember to apply these pastes sparingly, a little goes a long way.

>>
>>31012500

That's actually not quite as straightforward an answer as people assume. When most people say "edge retention" they really mean "edge retention slicing soft abrasive material to very low sharpness" which essentially turns the measurement mostly into a measure of the wear resistance of the steel (since slow abrasive wear is the dominant blunting mechanism in this type of testing).

In reality, push cutting exists, and in push cutting work it is not at all clear that wear resistance (and the carbide volume that enables it) helps edge retention at all. In fact, since apex stability (ability to resist microscopic apex rolling and chipping in thin sections like an edge) almost perfectly describes the dominant blunting mechanisms in push cutting, it should be the case that high apex stability steels (most carbon steels, tool steels and high speed steels) should actually have an edge retention advantage in push cutting.

Interestingly, this seems to be borne out by virtually all high performance hand chisels in existence being made of carbon steels, tool steels or high speed steels. Similarly with high end kitchen knives that blunt mostly based on cutting board contact rather than good processing.

Kukris are closer to a long axe blade than anything else, they're usually thick as hell. You'll usually see something like a ~10" blade with a thickness of 7-10mm with even the thinnest 'real' kukris coming in at about 5mm. I don't know what machete you currently use but likely all you'd get by moving to a kukri is less length with more weight and better choppin' powah for working with large pieces of wood that might be unwieldy for a thinner blade. If you're looking for a shorter blade that still has some heft then the kukri might be for you, but if you usually deal with light vegetation and don't have to do much heavy chopping then you might be sacrificing length and lightness for nothing.

Just like with every other "do everything" tool you have to sacrifice convenience and some degree of specialized utility for the sake of versatility, it's up to you to decide if that's worthwhile.
>>
>>31012983
Fair call except 12c27 is a low carbide stainless designed with apex stability in mind for the explicit job of push cutting.

>>
>>31013295

I was speaking in general terms rather than about the two steels Opinel uses specifically.

>>31013438

No, but I'm familiar with his work and the published work by Roman Landes supporting it.

My own experience with the high sharpness edge retention of various steels also tends to bear out the same conclusions (basically because how easily you can keep a knives touched up at or near initial sharpness mostly depends on avoiding microscopic apex rolls and or chips that cannot be handled by touch ups).

I know damn well I have good taste. My collection is sexy af compared to a lot of peoples' on this board.

Just finished up sharpening these 7 knifes took about 4 hours.

Longest to sharpen was the 940-1 (s90v)

Shortest time to sharpen was the Ontario arrow (D2 thin grind)

I'm not even a knifefag, posted like six times total in these threads, but I read this all as

>Holt shit I'm a gigantic faggot
>God I sure love cock, don't you guys love cock? I have the best cock collection and I have more cocks on the way
>I know damn well I have good taste in cock, my cock knowledge is beyond a lot of people's on this board

Like fuck dude we get it you like cock

The only durability concern I have is there dont seem to be any liners and the handle is some sort of hard plastic. The steel is AUS-8 so the edge won't last as long as harder steels, but on the plus side, it's a easy steel to keep sharp with just a sharpening rod. It has a scandi-grind/convex edge, so it's among the best cutters I own. I don't think durability is such a bad issue when the lock/handle has been tested and can hold over 130lbs without breaking and the tri-ad is arguably the best lock you can buy, so imo for being just around $30, it's fairly spectacular.

So yeah, I'm not sure what your friends are talking about. Plus, lifetime warranty is lifetime warranty. If it happens to break somehow, you can just send it in for repair/replacement.

Obvious owners of karambit folders are obvious.

Nobody cares what you mallninjas have to say. Especially if you don't have any knives to share on the thread.

Oh right, you're poor summerfags. You probably don't have anything worth acknowledging/mentioning. Let alone a smartphone to take quality pics of them.
