Tank friends...

Is 155mm impressive when it comes to tank main cannon caliber?

I know nothing about tanks so I don't know if this is something to be impressed about or not.
>>
>>30973632
it killed those awful giant robots, so its good enough
>>
Usually modern tanks have a 120mm gun
>>
>>30973632
It's an enormous increase from the normal current normal 120mm-125mm.

Also, the tank episode of IGLOO 2 was pretty great
>>
>>30973632

>Is 155mm impressive when it comes to tank main cannon caliber?

The Russians experimented with such a thing but they decided that it was pointless because:

1. The rounds are so huge that the tank can't carry enough ammo.

2. The recoil is so huge that the entire tank tank needs to be made much heavier just to work as a stable firing platform.

3. 125 mm is generally good enough for most tank applications.
>>
Germans had a project on 140mm cannon but it was scrapped because there was no threat of Soviet armoured rush anymore, some fairly shit sources say it would've had twice the muzzle energy of the 120mm rheinmetall gun.
>>
>>30973822
what is a t30?
>>
>>30974020
That was more of an assault gun than a tank due to the ability of the 155mm. The 155mm gun had less penetration than the 120mm attached to the T34. It didn't have AP, just HE.
Certainly overkill for every AFV of that era save something like the A-39, T28, or Maus.
>>
>>30974119
>overkill
indeed anon it was overkill and it worked perfectly aside from the reload speed.

Short answer, no.

While it was dubiously effective during ww2 with the Russians, who had the 152mm, and some post war tanks, today it's superfluous at best, pointless at worst.

Such a gun needs a special turret that can contain it, it can't carry as much ammo as a smaller gun, and the ammo usually is loaded with a seperate propellant charge so this complicates loading times and storage.

Especially today with kinetic sabot rounds and such, it's really not necessary to have a gun caliber over 120mm.
>>
>>30974525
there were no problems with either prototype it never became a production because it was way too op and expensive and hard to transport.
>>
>>30974746
>Especially today with kinetic sabot rounds and such
that's ww2 technology nigger
also shaped charge penetration is mostly dependent on diameter so it would be badass basically the same power as a tow missile.
>>
>>30975385

>there were no problems with either prototype
>expensive and hard to transport.

Those sound like problems.
>>
>>30975468
well not technical problems with the prototypes the tank design was sound from engineering point of view.

they were not needed and considered not worth the expenses. the murricans were very concerned with the nazi bunkers and anti-tank lines that's why they wanted direct fire 155, but they turned out to be very little challenge to the combat engineers in the end.

Redundant, make bigger tank.

Is this a U.C Gundam thread now?

A gun that could also fire a missile has been tried, IIRC on the m551 sheridan and the m60a2.

This was back in the 1960s-70s mind you, and there's a thread right now with an article back then that talks about this >>30974230

Many years have passed since those days, and gun technology has improved, so those kind of gun systems are no longer viable, however badass they would be.

T30 was more of an experiment whether having such huge gun on tank is even possible.

>>
>>30973632
it should be noted that most \155mm guns are smooth bore and not rifled, which does not give the same AP ability.
the only real advantage of ~155 is an increased high explosive potential

Russians used 152mm only on assault guns which made some sense, as regardless of reloading time having a gun that can level entire building with one shot is great for fighting in cities.

Tanks went up to 122mm and it was excessive back then. By the time Soviet officers saw T-44 and more importantly T-54 they became more and more hostile to the entire idea of heavy tank for a good reason, and even for the IS, the reason why it used 122mm gun instead of the same 100mm gun that was later used in T-54/55 was that Stalin wanted it to have big cock.
>>30976393
>A gun that could also fire a missile has been tried, IIRC on the m551 sheridan and the m60a2.
All currently used variants of 125mm guns Russians have can launch ATGM.
>>
>>30973822
>3. 125 mm is generally good enough for most tank applications.
This. With the use of longer projectile (900mm long penetrator) and larger propellant charge than the Zh52, they can put out 152 mm APFSDS tier performance which is close to ~1m RHAe with the Vacuum-1/2s rounds.
>>30973908
The new 130mm gun has about the same or even better performance of the 140mm when it was conceived in the 80s.
>>30977034
>lolwut Russians are into 152mm
The 2A83 gun is indeed 152 mm calibre- which is weird because the Soviets were all about differentiating new calibres from old ones ie no 122 mm tank projectiles because the howitzers already have those etc. Probably points to teh intent to use the same HE shells as the howitzers of which stocks exist in the millions of tons of.

155mm a shit, the Type 61 would have been better if it utilized a single 120 mm autocannon and machine gunned the Zakus like it was spess WWI.

It was still a better vehicle than the Zaku from a cost/effectiveness standpoint.

The 122mm do have advantages over a 100mm when it comes to HE rounds and the IS-2 was a breakthrough tank and it would most likely lobb HE rounds at bunkers and other fortifications so the 122m would do the job better then a 100mm which had the advantage in armor penetration IRCC.
>>
>>30975998
So you increase the size of the tank until it can cross rivers / small canyons, WW2 trench style.
