What is the difference between an "Amphibious Transport Dock" (otherwise known as an LPD) and a "Dock Landing Ship" (also known as an LSD)? It seems like they both kinda do the same thing. What's the deal?
LSDs have heli landing pads, while LPDs have pads and a hanger. In the USN anyways.
>>30973256
LPDs just took over the missions of LSDs and other related ships by integrating all the capabilities into a single hull.
>>30973256
According to USN, LSD's are specifically designed to hump big-ass LCAC's.
LPD's carry conventional landing craft and amphibious trackeds.

I was on the LPD Somerset and that bitch didn't have a hanger.

>dubs twice in a row
So does that mean there is no reason to have any type of amphibious ship other than the LPD?
>>30973409
An LPD is the only type of large amphibious ship you need.
>>30973404
What? Yes it does.
>>30973404
A Helicopter hanger, not something like on a carrier.
>>30973449
Oh wait youre right, sorry its been a while.
>>30973417
So does that mean that the Harpers Ferry class is obsolete then?
>>30973404
>>30973449
Pic very related
>>30973468
Yes. The Harper's Ferry Class was directly succeeded by the San Antonio Class.
>>30973468
>>30973481
The San Antonio also replaced the Austin Class.
>>30973481
While true, they do plan on building a smaller ship based on the San Antonio hull to actually replace the older LSDs. At least that's what I heard last, but its been a while since i read up on that program.

>The US Navy hull classification symbol for a ship with a well deck depends on its facilities for aircraft - a (modern) LSD has a helicopter deck, a LPD also has a hangar, and a LHD or LHA has a full-length flight deck.
>>30973515
I haven't heard about that. I know that they're going to procure a few of these:

I believe it's one variant with a flight deck, and one without.
Those are the direct replacement for the Ponce, which is the last operational Austin Class ship.

Honestly it looks like more ship then needed for the job, but if its cheaper in the long run then why not.
>>30973607
They kicked around putting a metric fuckton of VLS cells (around 300 iirc) on those. Fleet defense.
>>30973748
Arsenal ship when?
>>30973748
So an arsenal ship then?
>>30974095
Soon™
>>30974137
Pretty much. BMD/spam defense. Due to its large size it can have a fuckhuge radar on it.
>>30973748
The Zumwalt has 80 launch cells and you expect me to believe that an LPD is somehow going to have 300?
>>30973481
I saw this thing up close in Seattle during seafair
>>30973396
This is bullshit. The LPDs are specifically designed to haul LCACS.

Would the circumstance ever be likely to arise in modern warfare that you'd have a D-Day style landing on a contested beach?
>>30973256
The Amphibious Transport Dock is likely to come kick your door in and arrest you for possessing a Dock Landing Ship, while the Dock Landing Ship just wants to take you on the craziest ride you've ever had.
>>30975174
I saw it in San Francisco during Fleet Week.
>>30974368
ZumZum is a tumblehome hull, which is space-inefficient; those are also perimeter VLS cells, which are much larger than normal Mk 41s. In addition, the arsenal ship would not have much of a superstructure, since it would not carry much in the way of other weapons or sensors.
A Tico, at 10,000T, carries 122 VLS cells.

My father was a CO on an Avenger-class MCM and whenever I want to hear a hilarious drunken rant I bring up those ships after hes had some brandy.
Airlift is better

Yes. Does having the capacity to do so make it less likely you'll need to?
Also yes.
