Because the Soviets and other communist governments mass produced them in the tens of millions, and they enjoy arming their fellow travelers.

It's a simple stamped steel design, which makes it perfectly for large scale production by a centralized plant with cheap labor.

The loose tolerances, violent long stroke piston action, and stamped steel, brick shithouse mags make them very reliable and simple to maintain by illiterate conscripts and peasant revolutionaries, who were typically the people advancing communism. Those first two features also create inherent mechanical unreliability, but a service rifle doesn't really need to be more accurate than 3 MOA, so it doesn't matter on a practical level

It's a perfectly serviceable rifle, but a rifleman with an M16 can carry twice as much ammo for the same weight, because of the heavy mags, heavy ammo, and heavier rifle. The 7.62 x 39 round also has terrible terminal ballistics, a short range, and heavy recoil. It's excellent for penetrating barriers though, which is why the Russian Armed Forces still haven't phased all of it out.

The 5.45x39 round was designed to solve the problems with terminal ballistics, recoil, and ammo weight. It's similar to the NATO 5.56 round, but with a lighter bullet, which means less options as far as different loadings.

The AR-15 platform is probably better for professional militaries, because the DGI system is inherently very light and very accurate, and because the inline recoil makes follow up shots much easier. Also, the AR has more accessories that fit it, but the AK is catching up in that regard.

I would argue against this on the sole reason that its cheap. If Ak's started at $1000 for a bargain basement model, I would agree, but that isn't really the case
