What is a recommended shotgun for a new firearm owner?
>>30964333
Mossberg 500
Mossburg Maverick is cheap and built like a brick shithouse.
Something with a loud action to deter home invaders.
>>30964341
Any major difference between the 500 and 590?
>>30964333
Any. But my vote would be Mossberg 500. Good value, rugged and reliable, and infinite aftermarket accessories for your customization pleasure.
>>30964333
I own both a mossy 500 and a Remington 870.
I honestly like the mossberg better but the remington has an easily attached tube extender where with the mossberg you have to buy a new barrel to extend the tube. So if you want to add a few more shells to the capacity easily then buy the remington 870
Mossburg 590 usually has a M16 style bayonet lug so you can save ammo.
>>30964371
you can remove the magazine cap of the 590.
some 590 comes with a bayonet lug
That's it.
>>30964371
590a1 has bayonet lug and a heavier barrel.
But not much else, both are reliable and cheap

Is the Maverick (88) better than the 590, in any way? I can get either or for a similar price.
>>30964496
no, maverick is a 500 made in mexico
>>30964496
You are either paying too much for the Maverick or great deal on the 590.
Also there are differences between 590 and 590A1. As >>30964432 pointed out
>Maverick is the most basic shit
>500 is Maverick with tang safety, drilled and tapped, and not built by mexicans
>590 is 500 with removable cap for the magazine tube
>590A1 is 590 with metal trigger group and a thicker and heavier barrel
>>30964625
It's a good deal on the 590, and from how you describe it the 590 sounds like the best bet.
>>30964640
You seem to already know what you want, but asking to reinforce your decision.
I personally think the 590 is kinda pointless, more expensive than a 500, but not as good as the 590A1. If you find a plain 590 with the same price as a 500 then by all means go for it.
>>30964738
For Mossbergs, the 590 is what I'm looking at: I found one for a solid price, and with some added features. However, I'm trying to decide between this, the Remington 870, and a few others.
>>30964794
I wouldnt trust freedom group remington
>>30964640
Can someone clarify how easy it is to change barrel on a 590? I want to be able to switch for hd/hunting, but the 500 doesn't have the capacity
>>30965155
What about Winchester, a 1300 perhaps, or a used Ithaca 37?
>>30965213
>unscrew end of magazine tube, imagine a water bottle
>wiggle barrel, pull it out
>done
same for both 500 and 590, no tools required
I think you might be confused by "only 590 has removable cap thing", that means you can open the magazine tube itself from the muzzle end and take the spring out for maintenance, doesn't affect your ability to change barrels.

Browning Citori, anything other than an over/under is for cosplaying faggots.
>>30965468
>anything other than an over/under is for cosplaying faggots.
Why is that?
>>30965468
>buy this $1800 richfag two shot clay shooter
>everything else is shit
>trust me I am navy seal with 300 confirmed kills
considering OP seems to be actually clueless here's your (you)

Pumps are completely worthless for anything but shooting Germans during WW2.
If you want home defense go get a pistol and a flashlight. Remember that shotguns are basically rifles at close range unless the barrel is cut off.
>>30965735
I meant WW1
>>30965735
But pumping is fun.
>>30965773
Reminder you are replying to a nofunallowed fag.

>Pump useless in Pacific Theater
>Malayan Emergency
>Jungles/Cities of Vietnam
>Iraq for door breaching
>Bird Hunting
>Shoving up your ass
>>30965735
Barrel length doesn't determine how fast shot spreads.
It is a mix of gun, ammo, and choke constriction.
>>30966320
I don't think he was talking about spread but length of the weapon.
>>30964353
This.
I own a Maverick 88, 500, 590 and one Remy 870.
The Mac was my second shotgun and the one I have literally done nothing with besides cleaning it every 3-4 times I shoot it. The pump isn't the smoothest but I have yet to have anything break on this 10 year old scattergat. Completely stock. A few scuffs but fuck it! Cheap!
My 590 on the other hand -- piece of shit. I recommend the 88 and for $80 more, a 500. The real McCoy.
>>30964358
sorry friendo but that meme is stale, you'll have to throw it out and replace it with something fresh
This seems like an appropriate thread to ask, are singleshot .410s actually useful for anything?

Alright, thanks for the info.
