SVD is sexy as hell but pure unobtanium in the West, and literally means "Dragunov's Rifle System", in the same way that SVT-40 means "Tokarev's Rifle System of 1940."
PSL is a cheap Romanian knockoff of the SVD. These are expensive trash. If you want a not-SVD put a furniture kit on a 23" Vepr chambered in 7.62x54r

Okay so pardon my sperg here.

The PSL, or Puşcă Semiautomată cu Lunetă model 1974 (lit. Scoped Semi-automatic Rifle model of 1974) and SVD (Snayperskaya Vintovka sistem'y Dragunova obraz'tsa 1963, lit. Sniper Rifle System of Dragunov, Model of 1963) are NOT snipers in the same sense that you as a westerner things of sniper rifles.

The Soviet doctrine of Marksmen was different than the West's fundamentally from the end of WWII on. While your idea of a sniper is probably a static team of two working in a supporting role independent of an infantry unkt or high up in the organizational level, the Soviet doctrine was different.

The USSR saw snipers as more inline with what the west now considers Designated Marksmen: an individual man attached to a Platoon level unit who's role it was to provide accurate, rapid, long range fire at distances beyond what the Infantry Platoon was generally capable of (6-800 meters). The same goes for the PSL.

As such the SVD is considered "inaccurate" by some, but they have a fundamental misunderstanding of what the SVD was intended to do. Intermediate range target interdiction remains a potential of the SVD as it remains minute of man to 6-700 meters, but was never intended for roles like the USs M40/M24 SWS.

It's kind of near obsolescence these days but Russia's working on upgrades or a new system to keep it in service to the future.

The PSL is based more off of the RPK or the AKM. You have to use light ball ammo with it, and its pretty expensive for what you are getting. The Vepr in 7.62x54R or in .308 are much better options

some tl;dr stuff:

-AK-47 is the original "Kalashnikov".
-AKM is the more common "modernization" of AK-47. Both operate just the same, and fire 7.62x39.
-AK-74 fires smaller 5.45x39 round, that was inspired by 5.56 NATO.
-RPKs = long barrel "LMG" AKs. Come in both 7.62x39 and 5.45 variants.
-Veprs are just sporterized civvie AKs, with thicker receivers and barrels.
-Saiga = same as Vepr, but older. Lower quality parts, and use their own mags.
-PSL = technically an AK firing 7.62x54R. Looks a bit like SVD.
-SVD = Looks and operates kinda like an AK, but is very different from inside. Fires 7.62x54R.
-PKM = 7.62x54R belt-fed LMG. Some say they're like "upside-down AKs" but that's not quite right.

The AK style rifles are very simple and reliable.
Field stripping takes literally few seconds, and consists of only handful of fairly big parts. No pins or screws here.

It has a completely different bolt, the bolt looks like an AR-15 bolt. Milled receiver, stuff sort of like an AK.

Oh and a PSL will fall apart if you shoot heavy ball ammo through it (or was it the light ball ammo?).
