9mm out of a 16" barrel is nearly identical in ballistics to a 357 magnum out of a 3" barrel. It also is very quiet and nice shooting. Why anyone would rather go through the hassle of an sbr when a 16" 9mm is so great is beyond.

If you bought a complete one, like a Just Right or Aero, it would work fine but you'd be limited to whatever features and accessories that manufacturer uses.

If you built one, it likely would be finicky to troubleshoot for awhile. Once you get through the building woes it could be fine.

If you want to eventually use a suppressor with it, I wouldn't get a barrel longer than 5". I also wouldn't cheap out on magazines. Metalform is the gold standard, but you may get lucky with C-Products. In my experience, CP is shit these days.

Also in this 2016 market of MPXs and Evos and Z5Ps and APC9s, I don't think I could convince myself to make a 9mm AR again. Especially suppressed. If you want cheap, you can get an Evo. If you want reliable you can get an APC9. If you want looks you can get a Z5P.

Mine runs like a champ. Used a QC10 Colt mag lower (Didn't want to fiddle with unproven BHO on a Glock one), 8.5" X-Products barrel, New Frontier BCG, Wolff extra power buffer spring, and a Spikes 9mm buffer.

A real mix of parts, but they work well together. Pretty soft shooting, VERY accurate, and I've not had any malfunctions with it in ~1000 rounds or so through it thus far.

I'm Canadian, so none of the new fancy 9mm carbines that are being released are available up here yet. We got some FAMAE SAF's. and BRS-99, but they're hard to get and expensive af.

So what with the mp5 thread up right now as well, it's a good time to ask.
Suppose you were in charge of buying an SMG for your new swat team/special forces group/militia, would you go for an mp5 or a 9mm ar? Why? Is one better than the other?

JRCs are at a very competitive price point. I just finished ordering the last pieces for a 9mm build, and it's costing me $661. I already have tools and a rear sight laying around; that's additional cost to consider.

Also, 9mm ARs can require some system balancing. Careful consideration of buffer weight, barrel lengths, hammer types, bolts, etc. A JRC has that all taken care of right out of the gate.

9mm ARs are cool, and personally I regret nothing, but they may not be the most cost effective way way to get a pistol caliber carbine that takes anti-Feinstein mags.

Yes it does but IIRC the echo trigger works with a proprietary BCG and the MPX uses a different BCG than an AR. You would have to use a Tac Con or Franklin Armory.

lol thats it. last thing im waiting on is a glock lower i just shoved a 9mm mag in a 5.56 gun to get an idea of how heavy it was. It's actually not that heavy for a 9mm and it balances well.

I built it all out of good tier budget parts i don't have much money in it.

That question makes no sense, you mean magazine? I think colt mags are 32 round and Glock mags are 33 round. You can use glock drum mags in a glock lowered AR9 though.

I dont like the aesthetics of glock mags in a AR but i have tons of glock mags so i went with it.

Get a Spinta blem bolt i think they are still in stock. They are rumored to be made by the same place that makes RRA bolts. They are ramped for use with standard hammers and have the glock cut. They are based off the Colt bolt design and i have not heard anything bad about them yet.

Mas defense also sells "budget" 9mm bolts but they had a bad batch a while back where it seemed like there was something severely wrong with every one they sold. As far as i know they are standing behind the product and replacing defective bolts though. But they are not of Colt design so you dont really know how well it's going to hold up in the long run and if you can get replacement firing pins and extractors.

I thought about doing a 14.5" pin and weld but i didn't want to fuck with it. There is no muzzle flash from 9mm out of a 14.5" barrel anyways. So i just went with a 16" barrel and to save a little weight and length i stuck a thread protector on it since a flash hider will do nothing for the non existent flash anyways. .50 Beowulf is limited to 33,000 psi due to design limitations of the ARs bolt. .50 AE has a max case pressure of 36,000 psi, so you'd have to run lighter loads. All in all it doesn't seem that appealing to me. You'd just end up with something with one off parts that may or may not work, but has less velocity than a .50 beowulf.
