Probably not. I had a non-built piece of property in a developed area. I can't build a house on it, and it hasn't sold so I wanted to build a small neighborhood park on half of it so it wasn't just a shitty empty field lot since all the kids played football and stuff on it anyway.

My hopes of doing something good in the world were quickly dashed when I was told very vocally that I would have to buy insurance for it, and that my property taxes would go up.

I would absolutely not do this, not here in NY. In fact the first thing I would do is put up as many NO TRESPASSING signs or a fence as you can asap. If some trespassers decide to go fucking about on your property and it's wide open, and they get hurt, you are absolutely liable. This state is shit.

Step one) hire a lawyer specializing personal injury litigation, figure out how to write a solid waterproof, absolutely legally binding injury waiver.

Step 2) what you MIGHT be able to do, if it is legal to shoot in your land at all (call the sheriff's office and figure out the exact laws, how far you need to be from roads etc.) then you could "invite" people onto your land to shoot.

So private citizens being invited onto private land to shoot in a legal manner. Have these people sign waivers amd have a bulletproof system of registration and check-ins so that you can prove if someone really was on your land at any time etc.

Around your property you are going to need to clearly post no trespassing signs and things in accordance with state and local laws to ensure that IF someone WAS illegally trespassing on your property you would be able to show that you had the signs clearly posted.

You might want to reach out to the owners of other gun ranges in the state and area to see what battles they had to fight.

I would certainly appreciate this. I'm a wny anon and cat county is only like an hour drive. To get to even put lead at 500 yards would be brand new to me.

If it's private land and your shooting area is at least 500' from an occupied building there's no problem shooting on it. If your shooting area is within 500' of an occupied building you need the owner's permission to shoot.

If you wanted to have people shooting there who aren't your personal guests, you'll probably have to incorporate it as a shooting range or gun club, which will require time spent talking to a lawyer.

I don't know, I think it's closer to Cuba. We took off from a little airport outside of Cuba. I've got to get the survey back before I can speak to the acreage, but I'm told it's one of the largest privately owned plots in the area. I'm not quite sure where to start here, but I'll post what I find out if it looks promising..maybe even host a nugget fest or something someday!

You could just clear an area and invite people over when you are around. Keeping things informal would probably keep you off the radar. It might also be a way to develop a network to help you build toward something more involved.

Well stay tuned, guys. I don't see a need for monetary contributions, but there's more than enough old growth on sight to supply the lumber for any build. If you guys know what you're doing then I'd definitely have you out there to fell some trees. I'm going to have the structures professionally built, but I'm definitely going to keep it "of the land, by & for the people" to the largest extent possible. I have to get on the horn come Monday morning & get some information. After sleeping a night on this, I woke up kind of excited at the prospect, & I know both my grandfather & my uncle would approve, too! It's been a whirlwind week, guys. I do well, but this is by far the largest asset I've ever personally owned, & especially after the fly-over yesterday, it's all really beginning to sink in! I've got an event this afternoon, but I'm going to get out there this weekend & check it out from the ground. I'll post pics of the area described as a little teaser ;)

The only 2 airports I can think near cuba would either be the olean airport or the wellsville airport. I'm guessing it's in ischua from what you describe. Anyways I think its pretty cool you want try and do this op.

SAFE is really sucks in NY but such is NY.

Also more food for thought sometimes it's cheaper to cut the plot into maybe smaller plots for tax purposes to save some money.
